Your comment about cure time for 2k clear is gold. I just cleared a hood with Spray Max 2k Gloss and tried to wet sand and buff after 24 hours and couldn't figure out where all the damn scratches came from. I'm leaving it alone for a week and trying again but first, I need more beer.

You are the best teacher for auto painting on youtube. To the point with the right amount of humor. I used your expertise to eliminate failed clear coating, then painted and recoated my black truck fender flares using rattle can K-2 products. They turned out well. After about 9 days, I will refresh myself with your eliminating orange peel video and get it sanded and buffed pretty. Thanks. I would have never tried this, but somehow you made it simple enough to attemp.

What I like about these videos (apart from the fact that this guy is an expert) is that he is actually teaching you how to do things right. He knows there's people who would like to learn about this stuff and he takes the time to explain everything to the smallest detail. He doesn't like "cheap and fast" solutions so he uses the proper material and tools, as much as you need, he tells you how to use them and he tells you why he is using them. Awesome channel.

Hey just did this to my hood. Not too bad! Beats $1.000$ quote I got. I'll post pics when I'm done polishing. Just one note, if I could do it over, make sure you prime the surface really well with, I would say, several coats of primer. I could have used maybe one or two more coats. Then sand it the very best you can before painting painting and applying clear coat. Great video for DIY peops!

I just finished painting my C6 hood in my garage. I'm fortunate enough to have a decent air compressor so I didn't resort to aerosol cans, but everything else you've shown was incredibly helpful. I might add a disclaimer up front, in large flaming letters, "DO NOT PUT URETHANE BASE COAT OVER LACQUER-BASED PRIMER!" (Unless you're going for that cracked lunar surface look.) Keep it up!

Grit guard for the wash bucket. It is basically a shelf for the inside of the wash bucket. Most uses are 5 gallon buckets like paint, or even empty buckets at Home Depot or Lowe’s. The grit guard allows the wash mitt to get in the bucket but above the level of the bottom. Any dirt particles should fall through the grate and collect on the bottom. This reduces the risk of dirt particles getting caught in the wash mitt.

Instead of buying some commercial swirl remover, go to a discount store or super market and buy a box of corn starch and jug of distilled water and mix up a paste that's about the same consistency as the polishing compound that you used and polish out those swirls with it. Custom painters from the 1950s and 60s used that to polish out swirls in their custom lacquer paint jobs to get that "hand rubbed" look. Works like a charm.

Hello my friend , thank you for a simple DIY method to prepare/primer/paint/clear coat and polish your vehicle using 2K products, I followed your method and painted my complete 2009 Honda Civic with "Rattle Can" spray cans, order about 4 cans of base paint 4 cans of spraymax 2k Primer and 3 cans of 2k clear coat, followed your instruction by the book, cannot believe it came out great, I got a good car wash after i smoothed the primer coats and let the car dry for 2 days and then with Tack Cloth cleaned up all dust and applied 3 coats of base paint following the flash time requirements after every base paint coat , I tacked clothed the surface and applied the paint , and the paint layer came beautiful and smooth, today i applied 2 layer of Clear coat after 1 day of drying of final layer of base coat, I will wait for 24 hours before i apply the 3rd and final layer of clear coat[Do you think I should apply 3rd layer?], than follow your instruction for polishing as per this video. Question: As per your video you started the first sand papering at 1500 grit, do you think you also go up to 2000 grit for orange peel layer? What decides if you start with 1500 or lower than 1500 for removing the orange peel layer? I am still not clear on when to stop sanding the orange peel, is it when you don't see those little "bubble "? Thank ..I will post the picture once i finalize the polishing stage in about a week, as I will wait for atleast 1 week before i start sanding the orange peel, so that the clear coat is completely dry. Thank you from SoCAL where I was working in my garage cold winter day at 65F also but had a TACO ...man it was cold, but nice bottle of Tecate with lemon felt warm. :) CAIO! My total cost to do a complet car was about $400 including paint/primer/clearcoat/tapes/plastic sheet/paper. The same job I was quoted about $2500 at MAACO

I did my first paint job with rattle cans, I did a fender on a silver Audi, but I let the paint cure till the end, sanded lightly and applied 3 thin coats of 2k. Came up with zero orange peeling, that panel ended up even better than the rest of the car (which probably was re-painted)

curious in the video: after you got done waiting for the hour after base coat to apply the first layer of clear coat - then you waited 10 mins or between the next 2 more layers of clear coat and you were done, is there any harm in going more layers than just 2 or 3? also since you waited 9 days to start wet sanding would there be any issues if you wet sanded with the 1500 grit and then put more layers of clear coat on the car or would that be not a smart move? lastly, why is 1k clear a bad option? you did a great job even with the tools most of us would have access to. thank you.

@YellaFellyFell
@YellaFellyFell 4 года назад
A lot of times guys like this and most of the worlds that blend (autobody & detailing) they use words that are generic like polish or wax, and for us detail guys it burns us up because it's not the way we properly define what is compound (abrasive) polish (light abrasive and shine) wax ( mostly protection of polish and added shine) but I'm pretty sure it was compound he used on the rotary with the wool pad, because of the way it broke down also the amount of fling on the windshield and the overuse of "1500"

Dude. This is honestly by a mile the best and most informative auto paint video I've watched so far. And trust me. The last week I've been trying to teach myself how to spray with auto paint. Fuckn nightmare so far. Nearly slit my wrists and then you come along and clarify every question a novice like me could have. Good on you brother. Your a fukn legend. PEACE
