How to Paint Your Motorcycle Rims : Step by step process of painting some wheels for a 2001 CBR 929 RR Erion Racing Edition. I'm going with Ford Tuxedo Black Metallic. I'll take you through the process from sanding,masking,priming to painting.
Guns Used :
Primer - Purple Harbor Freight Gun
Base Coat - SATA jet 4400 mini HVLP
Clear Coat - SATA jet 4400 mini RP

You are correct: PATIENCE (including the prep work) is the key to a good paint job. Professionals like yourself make it look so quick and easy that beginners think they can quickly get the same results. Better to prevent runs and rough surface than try to fix them. Absolutely a great job on those wheels. And as far as the weights, if you use a product called 'Ride On Tire Sealant and Balancer', you can remove the weights and paint the entire wheel not having to worry about balancing or flat tires.

Followed your process step-by-step. The wheels look spectacular, using PPG Shop-Line. A couple of thoughts on the job. 1) For great straight lines, make sure the tape comes off after about 20 minutes of set-up. Otherwise you risk pulling off some color. And, 2) To simplify taping, just cover the tire and edge along the rim. Then, using a sharp box blade or exact knife, very lightly outline the edge of the rim. BE SURE NOT TO USE ENOUGH PRESSURE TO SCORE THE TIRE. Anyway, great video. LC

Looks real nice, I am starting to learn that painting is a whole hell of a lot of patience. Seems I get excited and rush things now and then, I have to keep reminding myself that the job will turn out nicer if I take my time don't put too much on and give it plenty of flash time. Also I never realized how important it is to clean clean clean so there is no debre in on the car because anything on the car is part of the paint! You do awesome as usual ;)

Thanks for the holder idea. Whenever I paint rims I would have to do the back then wait and do the front. next time I'll just set up some metal pipes to hold the rims up.

When painting something like this you want to paint it all at one time and chase the wet because if you don't the other said will be done flashed off and you'll have dry spots...thanks

Most start off with a Harbor Freight gun...It's a good cheap gun to start off with and you should be able to use just about any compressor to run it

Did you leave the valves in before the primer stage? I’m sanding down my wheels for painting at the moment with the tyres removed. The valves are still but i think i should remove them for full paint removal.

I left them in because the customer didn't want to pay to remove the tires. I would recommend to remove them especially since you already have the tires removed.

Painting machined disc mounts including threads etc and leaving balance weights on...just lets down a decent job.

You have to change your weights everytime you change your tires :) so this job will last maybe 2 years or less.

I'm about to paint a truck the same way with a pearl and flake...you really can do it different ways....have you thought about mixing your pearls and flakes separate and spraying about 3 coats of pearl and then come with the flakes behind that

+SprayWayCustoms yeah that's what I was thinking I'm doing at first. goin with a electric blue base, midnight blue pearl coat, gold pearl coat then silver metal flake coat. on my 84 trial I did black metallic base with blue pearl then gold pearl and it turned out real good. only thing was that the gold pearl looked more like copper color

love watching your channel! constructive criticism though, maybe consider removing the stick-on wheel weights. they will most certainly need to be removed the next time tires are installed and that will probably cause the clear to pull and leave an unpainted section where the weight was. don't forget to tell the customer to have it re-balanced after the painting is complete! have a great weekend!
