We would love to hear your thoughts on the video! - Was there anything you didn't know before? Or something you found interesting? And don't forget to share the video with that friend who always plays a backhand drive that gets you in trouble 😉
My favourite shot (besides my cross slice). This maybe more advanced but I don't hold it pan, I hold it same as backhand clear. You can roll your arm into the shot and it makes a "top spin" notion. Obviously if you want to drive it to the baseline you do less roll more push.
Hi thank you for another great video. My take away from this is landing just after hitting the backhand drive, plus realising I’m not always moving to the shuttle.
I coach mostly junior athletes at my club and I teach this type of shot to the more advanced members. It is a difficult thing to get them to understand the value of getting to the shuttle early with the racket in position in order to get the nice result. I can now use this video to reinforce the concept.
I always find your videos very practical and straight to the point, I often recommend your channel to my players so they get some more badminton knowledge. It's a great shot you've chosen in this video, especially for the beginners usually weaker on their backhand on the third shot. You didn't talk about forearm rotation for power or the change on the racket grip to make it cross, I guess you didn't want to give too much information? Anyway great work as usual, please keep it up 🙏🙏🙏 Great
I'm new to badminton (I've been playing less than 3 weeks) and your videos are a HUGE help to my learning how to play with proper technique. I'm a 52 year old ex-hockey player and am having such a fun time playing with my 13 year old son, who's also new to badminton. We're loving it!
This is the best badminton channel, I paid for private training and this is exactly what I learn from those classes. Thanks for the free and excellent content.
Thanks for your sharing Greg & Jenny. I have been watching your videos for dozens of times & still find something new to learn every time I re-watch. For backhand drive, I think the two most difficult things are to hit the shuttle with right timing & generate the power with short swing
I have a background in playing squash where you can't run around your backhand, so badminton backhands are more natural for me. But I could never explain it to others how to do it when they ask. Happy to share this with them! Thanks!
Yeah squash is very different footwork! We can't get our head around it when playing as we're often trying to play it as early as possible in badminton, whereas squash you have a wall and often it's better to take it late right?! Thanks for the comment 😀
Love the boxing example! Hope Greg is ok 😂 Another great video looking at so many factors I haven’t even though about! I guess this also ties in with the smash placement from last week with you mentioning about not hitting to the opponents racket and to awkward places or just away from them. Sure lots of people will enjoy this one, will share to everyone in my club 👍🏻
Haha he was a bit winded but has recovered now! Thanks a lot, it sure does! We tried to keep it a bit more simple in the placement but yes definitely right hip again is good positioning. This is also good for singles! Your swing might also change dependant on if you are playing with fast or slow shuttles but again that is more complex and probably for another video! Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
I love the backhand drive for its punch and precision as a shot. I find it so much easier to moderate the hitting action and direction on the backhand side vs the forehand side. A devastating combination, for me, is to condition opponents with a couple of fast, flat drives then mix in a disguised soft block that drops the shuttle far shorter into the court hopefully causing my opponents to scramble forward and offering a weaker, short lift back to me.
Aloha Greg and Jenny, awesome video on backhand drive. Thanks for tip of hitting the shuttle just before landing the dominant foot. Great for timing and max power. Also like tip on shot sequence, smash, drive. Very nice. Stay well.
Thank you so much for the video ! As a double player, it's a delight ! Can't make a suggestion because it looks like you know what I need better than I do ! Love from France ! Cheers
Ahhhhh so now ik the name of the shot that all of my friends say i always hit "really well" xd kinda new to badminton, the tips really helped me improve more on this :D thanks!
This video was really helpful to me thank you very much both of us, because I'm a lefthanded player I try this, its very easy to play game once again thanks
Hey Gerg n Jenny, back hand drive practice without a partner is a good advice n demo given by you both. Thanks both of you for making such video.. Keep making n sharing such videos in times to come Love you both
Eyo I swear I messed drive practice 2 days ago and this vid came up badminton insight answered my prayers 🙏🏻❤❤❤❤ tysm for tips and now I learned I should not step to side instead moved forward ✌️
lol I'm guilt of playing myself into trouble with this shot. I think it most useful situation for this shot is the 3rd shot in doubles when your opponent put the shuffle in the backhand mid court area. Speaking of which, would love some video on doubles first 3 shots tutorial 😃 As recreational players mostly play double games, i think it'll be very useful for a lot of us. Also, it's a very big topic in and of itself!
Will you be doing an advance footwork tutorial?if yes i hope it will cover what to do if you are wrong footed. And also what recovery you should use depending on your shot. For example when you do a drop in the back i think you should only do one chasse step unlikw when you do a clear. Thanks for this video it was great btw.
This is definitely something we'll look to cover in the future Vander! Especially what to do if you are wrong footed! You're very welcome, glad you enjoyed it!
I'm bad at smashing ( but I smashed subscribe button 😜) . Now following your smash tutorial it's quite helpful ✌️. And too bad in changing grip 😬 , need to focus on it . Thanks for awesome videos every week 😍 . Keep it up 👍.
I love your videos - detailed, clear, step by step. I know what to do now when my partner is 'hedging' while in front (will he take it, wont he?) forcing me to take an awkward backhand clear with no power behind it. Step forward instead with the back hand drive. One question - I am not able to find a dedicated partner in my circle i.e. willing to put in work outside of live games. I end up doing shadow training on the side. But never get a chance to perfect my timing. Suggestions?
Another great video 👍 The timing of the front foot landing is something I'll really look at. Now Greg, punch to the body, shuttle to the head - a rough time on this one! Wonder how many retakes Jenny wanted with the boxing glove? 🤣🤣🤣
Awesome breakdown of the shot. How much improvement is expected by practicing with a training racket (not the squash or other heavy rackets, a proper badminton-training racket sold by Victor)? This query is for all the shots and not just for the backhand drive.
I suck at flat drive, which is a crucial technique in playing doubles. Because of its importance, I am dedicated to mastering it. So I want to spend more time on it. However, I can only be on-court sometimes (2-3 times weekly). Could you guys advise me on off-court training to improve my technique? Thank you! P/s: I bought all of your programs. Are there any specific exercises that you recommend to improve my flat drive skill?
hi greg & jenny, i am able to perform flat drives pretty good.. thks for the video guidance 1 shot tat i struggle with very often: shuttles come high ( slightly over our head heights) straight towards or slightly onto back hand side, i cant seem to properly execute a drive shot.. PS: i am trying to avoid using china jump on backhand side due to my previous ankle injury
What should shot should i play if the shuttle is coming too fast? usually i only do a drop since i can't toss from that angle so i become really predictable
Would be very helpful if you could also post a laterally inverted video. As right hander I tend to not watch your videos as the both of you are left handed.
I want to ask about loose grip vs tight grip. I tried for a few years these loose grip, i can feel it can produce power only when the shuttle is slow. But it can make my racket unstable, my wrist wobble especially when the shuttle is too fast coming toward you. Then i change to tight grip but not too tight around (6-8/10) (more is tighter), surprisingly my shot becoming more consistant, power, and i can hit even the shuttle coming fast especially when playing doubles. Sometimes, i use (6/10) or (7/10) or (8/10) grip only when hitting the shuttle. Sometimes, i grip (6/10), then increase to (8/10) at contact point just as you say in the video above which is squeeze fingers at contact point. But not from loose grip (2/10) to (8/10) at contact point. I hope you can explain this. Have a good day.
Thanks again guys for another great video. I started late in life playing Badminton and was never taught the basics and drills that you now show/teach. -lease keep up the good work. 👽🏸
Thanks for the video. I see many times the third shot in a doubles rally being a cross court backhand drive(slower drive) by the rear player. I’d like to learn that shot, does that involve just a slight adjustment to the grip ?
