@@FreePilotTraining Hi Josh, just wanted to give a quick update. I had my practical exam on Dec 17th. I aced the oral portion of the exam, 2.5 hours. The examiner complimented my preparedness. Your channel played a big part in my success! I have watched and rewatched lessons here and your videos really helped me to understand a lot of the more difficult concepts. I ended up having to take a discontinuance. I went through the pre-flight and when I was in run up my attitude indicator started misbehaving. Although that instrument is not required for day VFR per 91.205, the examiner asked me what I thought I should do given the gauge wasn't functioning correctly. I told him that I thought we should discontinue. It seemed to me it would be challenging to complete maneuvers like steep turns, recovery from unusual attitudes and flying by reference to instruments without a functioning attitude indicator. He agreed and noted good ADM on my discontinuance letter. He is looking for a date in January for me to complete the flight portion of the exam. Thank you for all of your help!!

Excellent Job Josh , I love your channel. Quick question . how do you calculate height and switch back and forth from MSL to AGL. what is the mathematical formula?
@FreePilotTraining
@FreePilotTraining 7 месяцев назад
Thank you! First, find the elevation in that area. Towers are a good way to do that because the VFR sectional shows their height in AGL and MSL. For example a tower that is 1000 MSL and 400 AGL means that the elevation is 600 feet. If I want to fly 600 feet AGL I simply add 600 to the elevation in that area. So 1,200 MSL

Picking lined points is probably my #1 key trick with this. Dont pick things like thin railroads, bendy roads, if you can, try powerlines!! In my practice area theres a very nice long line of visible powerlines many students pick for S turns and Lazy Eights.

Josh, one tip you did not mention was the frequent use of trim adjustments, or at least that is what it looked like. You may want to explain a little more since I expect it is a good aid in maintaining altitude in this high task saturation maneuver. Good video.

Good job Josh. How are you able to tell if your S turn is pretty equal on each side? Is it showing on an instrument or iPad? How would the instructor evaluate it? Thanks Josh!
@FreePilotTraining

You should be able to tell if your “S” is the same size from the airplane, but ForeFlight is a great tool that can be used to see exactly how good your s-turn really was

I know that i asked this question before in relative to "turn at the point", you did answered it but i am a little bit confused. I saw that you were adjusting power in this maneuver, is that allowed? I was having difficulties maintaining attitude on my turn around the point maneuver but immediately i applied your tricks on that video, it was perfect 👌 but my cfi says that the examiner will see that as cheating.
@FreePilotTraining
@FreePilotTraining 7 месяцев назад
Great question. Yes, it IS allowed. Check the Airman Certification Standards. Should you be adjusting power? Not really. It makes it more difficult. In the video, the wind is extremely gusty and I had to adjust my power because my airspeed was getting blasted by the wind gusts. I adjusted my power to keep myself within limits.

S turns are too easy and what you practice is done on Turns Around a Point. I taught Flyover Turnbacks instead. My DPE liked them and enjoyed them too. At Vglide speed with 10 degrees flaps. Try them, you will like them too. S turns are too lame. It is Mild Maneuvering GRM.
@FreePilotTraining
@FreePilotTraining 7 месяцев назад
Well, it doesn’t matter how I feel about them, they are a maneuver that is required to be taught to student pilots. I’ll have to try the Flyover Turnbacks

@@FreePilotTraining GRM Turnbacks are used to practice for Box Canon Turnbacks and EFATO/LOTOT Turnbacks. Also help for Short Approaches, and low weather circlings Turnbacks. Many accidents by doing them wrong way. DPE will be impressed.

@@FreePilotTraining Try the Flyover Teardrop Turnback first. With flaps 10 and Vglide speed. Better practice over a simulated runway section, flyover it, then Teardrop Turnback to fly over again. Always plan to align with a headwind, avoid tailwind alignments. So if crosswind, after flyover you turn away from the crosswind on first leg of the teardrop, then turn headwind to align on the second leg. Have fun.

@emergencylowmaneuvering7350 If it's too easy then you probably don't need these videos, they are for student pilots like me trying to learn. Doesnt matter how easy it is, I need to learn to do this properly to get my pilot license.
@CFITOMAHAWK2
@CFITOMAHAWK2 6 месяцев назад
@@FreePilotTraining I was a student of the Emergencylowmaneuvering CFI in 1996. At the beginning i didnt want to learn turnbacks due "I might not need this maneuver at at all". But then i saw many accidents on those maneuvers by doing them wrong. Not only on EFATO, but also on badly done Box canyon Turns which ARE TURNBACKS too. And those circlings turnbacks after flying almost over the runway at 400 agl, but then have to turnback to land on opposite due winds. Many accidents by "I dont think i will need that maneuver at all guys". And many by pilots with thousands of hours but dont know turnbacks.
