One way to combine DJing and live performance is to bounce a "TV track" - which is a mix with certain parts missing (like the lead vocals or the synth lines you want to perform on the fly)

I know the pain of creating a live setup. I'm doing it with Ableton(+ launchpad + another midi controller) and my modular synth. I'm still not sure about adding a drum machine (maybe TR-8s). It's a long process to set up a project for jamming to play even for one hour without being boring. Overall I think it comes down to getting as much performance features into as little space as possible (without menu diving). I still think that the OB6 is pretty big for a live setup but the Iridium is perfect in that regard. Also in live situations many parameters don't make as much sense as in the studio. Effects and Filters are suddenly more important than waveforms and envelopes. I even thought about building a eurorack just for effects and filters. Those are the knobs I will turn live after all.

Oh yes, The OB6 while impressive sounding is not ideal for live setups due to weight (unless Jon asks the venue politely to rent one where he is playing at). A portable solution (relatively speaking) is the recently released Oberheim TEO 5, same Oberheim sound quality, in a compact portable package

Good explanation. I use a very similar setup for my shows. The only part I dislike is flying with al the gear.
@Arperture

I am building a live setup that is hardware only. I try to keep things simple yet give myself as many options to explore musically as possible. My main sequencer is an MC707 matched up with a TR-8S for drums. The MC707 provides back up drums, a looper track, three channels dedicated to the onboard synth engine and three channels that sequence and act as a mixer for three desktop synths. Usually I use a TB-03, SH01A and a poly synth like the Peak. The MC707 gives a lot of opportunity for improvising and clip launching, Ableton style.

Good point about that the audience might not know that you're controlling the video effects. Maybe you could have some part in the first track that makes it really obvious. But I don't think it's a big issue, even if people don't get how it works it's still cool.

super useful mate. Vielen Dank. i like how humble you are & that you have essentially worked out how to do everything & get it into 2 suitcases. this is an entrepreneur's mindset & by doing this you can be more successful. Question: how do you map Resolume to Ableton or which ever DAW you use to play live ?

Great stuff! Thanks for sharing. And props to Vanessa for being an awesome partner. 2 cents - Do you need people to know you're doing the lights? I think it's cooler to make the music then when people ask about the lights be like 'yeah that was me too'. Smooth.

you should check out madmapper to get that projection in the right shape to fit the screen if you haven’t found a solution you like yet. As far as letting people know what you’re doing on stage you could always try putting a small overhead camera over your set up running to resolume to be manipulated and mixed with your other visuals. Looking sick! Would love to see a full performance like this from ya 👍🏻

The Ob6 keyboard looks pretty massive. Have you considered touring with the module and controlling it via midi keyboard? or via a push 2 that could replace the APC40, you’d just need a mixer

From an artist's perspective and from a consumer's perspective I honestly don't see that much advantages in Ableton style electronic live performance where the artist is just modulating loops to "just" DJing. However there are also electronic music styles where bands are more common than solo artists (think of styles like Synth-Pop, EBM, Industrial) which works good for me.
@tomrhodes7977
@tomrhodes7977 Год назад
The main difference for me in comparison to Djing is you are playing music you have created yourself instead of other peoples tracks - Even if you are "only mixing" pre recorded loops in Ableton or on other hardware it is a much more dynamic way to perform than DJing. The educated audience will connect with that artist more if they really enjoy the music knowing it has been created purely by them and has been live mixed and arranged on stage in fornt of them.

@@Jonsine Nice, that's awesome that you create stuff from scratch in a live setting. Also love your idea of using smaller elements from existing tracks to create new music live. You should post a live set or even just an improv jam sometime, would love to see it.

Great. John. You can have a camera taking a superior image of your setup and project in the screen... so people can see what you do with your hands.
@Amatteus
@Amatteus 3 года назад
You have not mentioned how you handle tracks and how you switch songs. You will have to put all songs in the same project. and working always with the same number of tracks.. having each track always dedicated to the same. I do kick, bass, drums & percussion, chords & arpeggios, melody, vices, pads and effects.

I'm afraid that in order to play live you'll ruined your own song, those cutoff opening for exemple looks like old DJs when then have an button to trigger an alarm, hope you'll find the right balance between doing something for the music and doing something in order to being seen by the public doing something It looks like when reviewer are showcasing modular eurorack things, they do a lot of weird things, but at the end you don't know how this can sound into a real song, I feel the same about your effect, I think that it's cool but I don't know how this can improve the song
