The Core of Self-Confidence
Self-confidence is one of those things the we recognize when we see it. But we don't usually know how to build it.
The reason is because we often misattribute self-confidence. We feel good when people give us compliments and assume that's where self-confidence must come from. After all, if we heard those nice things all the time, how could we not be confident.
But while praise and compliments may help temporarily boost self confidence, they don't last long. The leave us searching for the next hit. What truly contributes to enduring self-confidence is building self-esteem. Because nothing inhibits confidence like low self esteem.
Self-esteem can be a tricky concept, but it really boils down to how you feel about you. If you are proud of the way you are living, you'll have high self-esteem. If you're not, all the compliments in the world can float that sinking ship. Your have low self esteem.
This video explores a few of the fundamentals of self-esteem so you know how to build your self-esteem from a rock solid foundation.

Hard work is the best way to raise self esteem to me, whether it's working on your body, your mind or your work. If I spent a good amount of time working hard on something I feel like a million bucks and no matter what anyone says I KNOW I've put in time into it so it gives me an incredible feeling of accomplishment, joy and pride. :)

Respectfully but completely disagree in my case. No matter how hard I work on something, I can't help but think about how everyone else can do it better than me. I'm always the worst option in my mind. I'll do something if you ask me to and do my best, but I'm 100% sure you shouldn't be asking *me* for that

Interesting - After alot of self reflection, I decide to become the "me" who is the protagonist in my own great story. In other words, to always take my own advice. I just mentally ask "what would the legendary 'me' do?" or "what kind of person do I want to be?" and it really gives me guidance. That's helped alot with motivation, self-discipline, ethics and morality, and thus my self-image. It also gave me a way to identify my faults and mistakes honestly, and thus work on improving them. The hard part is that eternal vigilance, to keep remembering the method, and to not succumb to knee-jerk impulses of bad choices.

Absolutely awesome idea to look to your own wisdom for advice. Just last week I said to my therapist: I feel full of wisdom but my life does not reflect that. It might be because I didn't have the trust to rely upon it. I didn't use to ask myself: what would the Legendary Anna Bis do but rather How can I please others. There's nothing wrong with pleasing other people as long as it is not compulsive. From now on, I'm going to make my decisions based on what I believe is right and not on what I believe will win me approval.

@stuartmcnulty9142
@stuartmcnulty9142 8 лет назад
Just throwing this out there, I struggle w/ the samething - its probably because public speaking isn't a dialogue (ie it's not forming a mutual connection). Asking someone about their day is a conversation, it means they're going to reply and be totally unpredictable which can be kind of scary. I think you'll find that if you open yourself up and not have any expectations about someones answer you could do it.
@sexybeast7728
@sexybeast7728 7 лет назад
there is one sleazy trick you can use.. It's sleazy because you are being arrogant a bit, but it works. Anyway the trick is to ask question, confidently (with smile perhapse), and if they don't respond or they respond in a bad way (whatever the bad way is for you) remain confident and make them feel socially awkward. Be like: "wtf dude, i am just being polite, that's what people usually do in this situation, why are you acting so weird and socially awkward?" mentality. If you can project that feeling to them, they will start investing in conversation immediately because nobody wants to be socially awkward (except for people who are socially awkward in general). To summarize.. Act like everything you do is what people should do and usually do in that particular situation and if they don't go along with you, they are just being weirdos.
@sexybeast7728
@sexybeast7728 7 лет назад
I can give you example, yesterday i was on main square with 4 girls and 2 guys from my college class standing and waiting for tram and i started conversation asking every one of them which path they are heading. All of them answered except for one girl that was like, - "why would you ask, why would you care, it's none of your business, it's my private life..." (she was just teasing, but still), i responded to her: - "why would i not ask?, i am just making a conversation going. everyone said where they are going, what's the big deal" - i got an agreement form the group and whole focus was on her. She kept teasing for a little bit more than she stopped for the rest of the night. I also told her in joking way that i will never ask her that question ever again because he clearly is upset by it (and i mean it). She gave me smile. That also gives me fundation for future jokes. Simple line like: "I would ask you where are you going now but i said i will never do that again so..". That line will make her giggle for a bit. The point is, as long as you act confidently and assuming that you are acting the way people should act in that social situation, you have nothing to worry about.

Self esteem cannot come from the outside... Absolutely true. I work hard, people respect me and often ask my advice. They often come to me for both my insight and expertise.... I'll get compliments about my intelligence and work ethic and at the end of the day, I get home, look in the mirror and absolutely hate what I'm seeing. It's a strange reality... no one I know thinks of me in this way. They all think I have it together, but honestly... on the inside.. I gave up long ago and there are days I seriously consider just ending it. I'm really not trying to be melodramatic and I seriously don't want people to tell me it'll be "ok" or anything like that. I'm not looking for sympathy. I'm just pointing out, that for some people... It's easy to give everything... when you believe the worth of what you're giving is zero.

This video advice is gold. I've done this over the last few years, and it quadrupled my salary.One point I would add is:"Know what you are saying and why it is relevant."I still today probably couldn't stand up in front of 5 friends to tell a joke without screwing it up, but I'll gladly tell an audience of 20 company directors and executives about the business elements I am intimately familiar with.If you know what you're talking about and why those points are relevant, if you structure it in a sensible and meaningful way, and with a little thought into how you present the information, you become God in front of the crowd."Confidence" becomes a silly buzzword. You grow beyond it. That's true self-confidence.

I was suffering from burnout a few years ago, like, depression and anxiety, packaged in a neat nervous breakdown. I was a wreck. But after roughly 7 sessions of therapy, I could feel myself developing self-esteem. I was always confident in my abilties (well, my brain); but still, I never felt good enough as a person without any accomplishments. So, in my case, it all boils down to knowing myself, accepting myself the way I am and then finding a way to actively use my innate talents. And I found that the "knowing yourself" is the crucial step. Like, I always thought that I was an egoistical introvert, but this was more due to the way I was raised than who I actually am.

Exactly, I heard this somewhere" be the same person even if no one is watching" it's pretty much what I live by now. when I start to self doubt I'll be up on myself I ask myself if I would say to someone else. When I get angry at someone I ask myself is this something I would want others to know I think. It can be a heavyweight but it also leaves you feeling good at the end of the day! Knowing at any moment if I was dying I would have no regrets or nothing to hide.

My mom is the most confident person I know of, and she's not pretty nor did she come from money. She was orphaned at age 12, lied about her age to get menial, minimum wage jobs, studied like crazy in school, earned a full scholarship to college, and used her degree to get a very well-paying job. Her life path instilled in her mind that she CAN. She's self-reliant, knowing that if she must get something done, she can do it. She doesn't think she's better than others. She doesn't compare herself to them. She just knows she has incredible inner strength. It's a real self confidence that doesn't come from being told you're good looking, or because you come from a famous, affluent family. It's comes from her inner knowing that "I can."

Took me 15 years to come to this realization. Ive suffered with social anxiety since i was a teenager, when i speak to someone i often find myself being anxious and then for the next day or week i'll think about what i did wrong in that social situation. Recently i havent been as bothered by it, I'm not even conscious of what others maybe thinking about me and even when i do something goofy or unconventional it will be forgotten 5mins later. I realized that my self-esteem increased without me even trying to do so. I think its really about feeling proud of oneself. For you it might be maintaining your character and integrity. For me achieving my physical goals has meant a lot, even if they arent much by other peoples standards it means a lot for me. Thanks for the vid.

I believe in a mix of internal and external confidence. External confidence = how much money you have, your looks, your relationship status, your health (health is both intern and extern I believe) (so these are the reasons to feel proud/confident) Internal confidence = how good you feel about yourself even when the external factors are at a low point (so it's really loving yourself and being proud even if you don't have a lot of reasons to be proud about yourself)

You can't derive self esteem from within yourself until you learn to let go of the constant need for validation from others. Too many people don't know "how" to do that because it doesn't feel logical or real...and yet that's what the core most self help advice out there needs to be.

Hi, Self-esteem is built by accepting yourself fully. With your flaws and your good traits. Building self-esteem on being a good person is beautiful and amazing, but also is only a leg of the table that can crack - to put it with your words. Very often you will find that there is no right or wrong, because the world is not black and white. What can be good for you can be bad for someone else, so being "a good person" and "doing the right thing" can and will get after you, with feeling guilt in some situations where there is no right answer for everyone. Being ok, with not being a "good person" is key, because we all have the right to error, and still be loved. As we do love our closest with their flaws. Thank you for your beautiful work, I love your videos even if I disagreed here.

You would be a great life coach!! You can tell you live & are passionate about what you do & that’s so awesome to see. I envy your ability to do it. But it’s pushed me to go back to school after 13 years to accomplish what I REALLY love to do for a living. Thank you for your videos & your motivation! So much bad & negative content out there. It’s nice to see something that inspired & pushes us to do better & be better 😁

I think this may have just saved me. I remember a time when I looked up advice to help with my self esteem and I was first introduced to the notion of a “self esteem file”. This is essentially a document made for the specific purpose of recording every instance of praise you receive. The idea is that one could return to said document whenever one is feeling low levels of self esteem and this regain them. It seemed to work for a few days, but the strategy very quickly fell out of favor as I returned to my old ways of depression and depravity. I feel much more confident about the methods introduced in this video. These are the types of tips that help one banish not just the negative outlook itself, but to kill the sources at the root. It is a way for one to truly feel pride in oneself and press forward, no matter how much anxiety besets them. Looking back on it, this message sounds pretentious, but to be totally honest, I don’t really care like I normally would. In one fell swoop, I think my self consciousness has finally showed itself out of my brain. Thanks for that

The bigger question is do you want to look confident or to feel confident because these two objectives are way apart?

This is a brilliant breakdown of what Self Confidence is and the suggested strategy to raising self-esteem brings about a range of possibilities once you have had a chance to examine how you have been determining your self-esteem so far. Doing the right thing is always going to be subject to moral reasoning, and to those who choose to identify the right thing to be the socially accepted one, may find friction. Therefore, some alternative strategies must be explored. Otherwise, it is a fantastic breakdown. A must watch.

Totally true. Always do the right thing and don't give a shit what anyone else thinks or says. People with low self esteem will always try to bring you down will people with higher confidence don't feel that need because they have nothing to try to prove.

Awesome video! Thanks a lot for your advice! And it’s very true- we try to compare ourselves, we try to impress, we try all stuff but be our true selves and it just ends up to us feeling so insecure. You really put me at ease. We don’t have to be the best, we just have to be our best selves. After all, there’s no scale really.

It's for that reason that I believe the focus should never be self esteem, but self discipline. Self esteem fluctuates because it's an emotion. At times we feel like good people, at times we feel bad, but discipline is what makes us consistently efficient in the face of those fluctuations

This video has been the most helpful to me, Thank you so much. I wish I could underline that. I was that guy that could just walk into any room and dance. Literally dance. I'm well revered in my circle of friends. I'm the fun. Crazy. Nice. Guy. And now in my career a lot of people come to me literally as if I'm the boss. But I've noticed lately something has been off. Id leave work without a smile. I'd be drained. Ive been basing my esteem from good performances wheb actually in my work they don't praise and feedback rarely happens. So it's mainly through that lack of compliments. I realize now I need to express myself to my superiors and help the people that come to me through them. By voicing my own opinions, while still respecting there's. I don't think highly of myself at work, I let my administration walk over me when I help their employees and they don't even know, it eats at me sometimes. I don't want to cause problems but I've been low because I'm not doing the right thing.

Whenever people ask me about the components about the blueprint of my self-confidence, I have the same answers. First component: I don't care. I don't care what other people think about me, and when I help them it is done unconditionally. You gotta help people not because you want them to think about you in some way, but do so because that would be respecting your bushido. Not caring what others think is a superpower along with stoicism. Second component: Integrity. Integrity is part of self-respect. If you owe something to someone, give it back. If you promised yourself something, pay respect to that promise. If you made a plan for tomorrow, follow through. This will harness willpower and gives you the confidence that you can achieve anything. Third component: Self-love. You can tell when someone is wearing flamboyant clothes just to impress you. You can also tell when someone is wearing flamboyant clothes because they have self-love, value and self-respect. Whenever you do something, focus on it as if you're doing it for yourself. Don't study because you want to ace the exam and get on with it. Study because you're teaching yourself new things, because you enjoy learning and the overall experience. That's the main element of those people who exude charisma when they have a book between their hands. They're focus solely on the experience of teaching themselves and expanding their knowledge, without a care about people around them. Fourth component : For those leaders or future leaders of you. A leader loves his followers unconditionally, elevates them, and never puts them down. He doesn't denigrate them when they're feeling like shit, apologetic, can't keep eye contact, weak body language, weak voice,self-sabotaging...etc, just to boost his ego. Also, a leader can only lead his followers with confidence if he has harnessed the certainty, without a shadow of doubt, of having arrived mentally where he's going to lead them. If their plan is to reach point Z from point A, then in his mind, he's already there.

Great videos, but one thing I haven't seen addressed yet (unless I completely missed it) is posture. I find when I slouch that my confidence really drops, so I implemented an exercise that really helps boost me. Wherever I am or doing, I'll start from the bottom and work my way up and repeat this mantra: stomach, chest out, shoulders back, head up and eyes forward. It does wonders for my confidence and invigorates me. Certainly something to consider.
