About this video:
In this video Ian Stone from Simpawtico Dog Training shows you how to use touch as a training aid. We all know how to “pet” our dogs, but learning how to correctly pet your dog in ways that they particularly like can supercharge your training and make your rewards and praise carry that much more weight. Plus, you always have it with you!

Excellent stuff! We KNOW that more parents should teach their children to STOP top of head petting. We often meet adults with kids who ask to pet our Goldens. When we agree with the statement, "Ok, sure but not on the head. Pet their sides instead." They question our reasons and disbelieve how head touching can be interpreted as an act of aggression to a dog. Especially from strangers. Thanks Ian.

I always tell people my Rottie doesn’t like to be pet on her head…Now I at least know I was right! ❤️ it boggles my mind how they never listen & wonder why she *quickly* looks at their hand & since she’s over 100lbs can be kind of scary. .That’s not on me. I specifically told them before they came forward after they asked.🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️
@Tailsnpaws

@@RottieMomCreations correct Sol. An approach to the head of any dog, regardless of breed, is an act of aggression. Better to stroke their chest than the head.

Love this! My mom was a dog trainer and I'm still learning new techniques. You helped teach my 14 year old lab "down" in a way that was comfortable for him. Puppies are easier, older dogs have limitations like arthritis. I've been struggling with keeping my 14 year old dog calm when he's in public places like the vet or the pet store where there are other dogs. He wants to greet other dogs and will bark and whine. It's difficult to handle him because he's old and I don't want to hurt him by tugging his leash or nudging his body to distract. I also get the feeling he either has selective hearing or has a hard time hearing so yelling his name when he's barking over me doesn't help. I'll try scratching him in some of these places to try and distract him. But lately I've just been letting him bark and cry. Would love techniques to train him out of this and to stay calm and collected around other dogs. He just wants to meet everyone.

This video was very helpful. My last dog was a lab shepherd mix and she loves being petted on the head and pretty much anywhere. My shepherd husky puppy now hates being touched on the head but will tolerate it now and then from her family only. Anyone else and she will let them know it by pulling away. A lot of people tend to do this and I am at fault too so this was very helpful. Going to work on petting her on her chest and sides from now on!! Thanks!!

I give him oatmeal baths regularly so it's not dry like it used to be but he still loves it. Sometimes I can even get him to quiver his whole body at once 😂

My dog absolutely loves me massaging/scratching on her back near her bottom. she falls into doggy heaven. She also loves the top of her back legs also. She enjoys her ears being rubbed/scratched and her belly. I find that other dogs love those areas too. I don't even realise I am doing it to other dogs until a friend mentioned it the other day and said she noticed how much the other dogs loved it. I have been doing it for so long and when you do things for so long and they enjoy it it becomes second nature Lol x
@liverpool2sex
@liverpool2sex 3 года назад
Also forgot to mention she also loves being rubbed under her chin and further down her neck to just under the front of her neck near her belly. Her face is a picture. It is lovely watching her (and other dogs) when you see them enjoying and loving being stroked and massaged. There is nothing better than seeing them love it and their faces so happy. It is almost like when we get a massage and we love it and are so relaxed our dogs are the same and then when they give us kisses for it and when we stop they lift their paw up and tap you to say 'Please continue, I want more' and so you do Lol. It is also funny and lovely when you get what I call their 'tickly spot' and their legs go bonkers. One of my friends dogs that I see most days her dog comes straight over to me and expects me to give her a rub and massage and if I don't do it or don't do it for long enough she barks at me as if to say 'Come on I want my rub' Dogs also know if a person is nice. They are a pretty good judge of character. Some that are nervous of people might take one or 2 times of seeing you before they start to trust you. I am normally quite lucky and even nervous dogs trust me from the off or the next time of seeing me . How people can hurt or abuse dogs I just can't comprehend and think those people should be treated how they have treated that dog and also spend time in jail and NEVER be allowed to ever have an animal ever again x

I am not really sure if they bark at me becos they like me or they wanna bite me ..but i did see their tails wiggles alot .. so ppl telling me, its becos they like me? .. i am very uneasy still ... In one of your videos I saw you with a black and tan hound. I have a little black and tan bloodhound and she is a handful. She is also very smart. She learns quick but getting her to come when called doesn't always happen. Also if she doesn't want to be leashed she will throw herself down and kick and mouth my hand an arms. Probably good to slow things down and try to introduce touch more progressively. Likewise, pairing it with good associations can help, too. Take a look at Chirag Patel's "bucket game:" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6mgo8SlugGM.html

Oh my gosh I've been doing the tillington touch for years. There's not a lot of information out there on it unless you go to one of the classes though. You really don't want to do it wrong but they do have some great pointers and do demonstrate some great ideas even in the few RU-vid videos you can find. I've met up with people who have become trained practitioners and learned from them here and there as well as just from my own experience of handling animals! Too bad there aren't Chiropractic seminars that are readily available and free and legitimate I mean I go to the University's a lot and they often have all sorts of seminars for free the Chiropractic would be pretty interesting along with acupuncture but I can see their hesitancy to try to do a one-day seminar over something that they've been doing for years

My puppy, Solar, isn't always a fan of touch. She's better thsn she used to be, but sometimes she shies away, and after a while she might start using her mouth to stop petting. Do you have any tips for this?

Do you have any suggestions on how our 18 month old pit mix who is currently undergoing heartworm treatment can burn off energy? As you know, dogs going through heartworm treatment must be kept very still, but this dog is a ball of energy to say the least! We've tried interactive toys and feeders, brain games, smell games, working on tricks and commands, but nothing is working. She needs to run and play but can't do that for a while. We adopted her from a rescue about six weeks go but within the past week or two, she's been chewing on anything she can and nips at us 24/7. We don't know what else to do.

Hi Ian - just caught onto your videos! Fantastic and can't wait to give them a try. I am a little scared though. I have an aggressive bull terrier (3 yrs old) who has been been to three different trainers so she can do all the fundamentals. However, she's iffy on affection. You can't touch her ears, mouth, paws. Just yesterday I went to rub her side and she attacked. I'm the family member who feeds her, plays with her and handles her in general. She's territorial even when it comes to bowls and water bottles. It's difficult to know what trigger gets her upset one day into the next. Any video you offer than can help?

That's a tough one, for sure. As I said, dogs will respond differently based on their temperament and history. One of my favorite behaviorists has said that touching a dog is an earned privilege. Some of them will really make you work for that privilege! In the meantime while you're building up to it, concentrate on rewards you present like food, toys, and opportunities, and verbal praise+feedback. Keep the touching very brief and to a minimum, but still target those same spots when you do touch her so that you're training her brain to like it. I'd recommend to focus on the ears, cheeks, base of the tail, shoulders, and sides of the body. Light, brief touch. Save the chest and inguinal area for down the road (and even those will be brief). Focus on some low-stakes Classical Conditioning to get her to LOVE being around you and other family members. My next video will address some of the bits I mentioned. Good luck!

I used the True Touch glove and my hand to do these touches. They love it! My cocker spaniel Louie loves his butt rubbed. And inguinal area. The coonhound loves his chest and ears. Great video! Do you mind if I share it?

My dog got up and walked away, and shied away when I went for the inguinal area. I think he may have been abused in his former home. I also foster. What can I do in cases like this?

This is so interesting! Is it normal for some puppies to not really like being stroked, even in these places? We've been affectionate with her since the start she's been trained with food and praise but she's nearly 5 months old and isn't a huge fan of stroking. She much prefers food based training and reward! Any advice?

Hi Charlotte. Well, food-based training and stroking aren't exclusive. It's not either/or. Stack them together for more reinforcement. Take a look at our video on modular rewards: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KzsZ9tk-fh4.html

When I was a little kid watching cartoons, I thought the top of the head was the best place, but with my first dog we got a few months ago I learned that it wasn't until a few days till he trusted me 100%

Do dogs like being rubbed on the stop (the point where the muzzle meets the head)? I've always noticed that my dogs seem to fall into that "Doggy Heaven" when I rub right there.
@SimpawticoDogTraining
@SimpawticoDogTraining 7 лет назад
YES! That's a natural calming spot. Some dogs, of course, won't let anyone touch their muzzle (i.e. "Muzzle Shy"). And some then it can be hard to even get that spot on brachycephalic dogs. But if your dog is agreeable that's a great spot to rub softly!

The dog I grew up with loves head rubbing, mostly a "noogie" motion. He's a strange one.

Have you had any luck/experience with clickers for training? I've seen a few people with them down at the park and they swear by them. What are your thoughts? Also, any tips on how to get my little girl to come when I call EVERY TIME? We seem to be struggling with that one. Thank so much for your great videos!
@SimpawticoDogTraining
@SimpawticoDogTraining 7 лет назад
Hi Kristin! Here's the thing about clickers: on one hand, YES, they're excellent training tools. A dog can learn up to five times faster with one, and you can teach some complicated things pretty easily with it. On the other hand, it's a sensitive tool that requires some practice on your part to get good at. And there are some ground rules you CANNOT break or you'll ruin the clicker for good and then you won't be able to use it to train again. I don't teach my students with it until advanced classes for that reason. Karen Pryor is considered the Queen Bee as far as clickers are concerned. Look up her material to get the hang of it. ----- With COME, the three secrets are 1) start with short distances, no more than 5 or 6 feet and build distance, 2) practice initially in safe, low-distraction places (like your living room), and 3) let them run off for most of it once they come...you don't want to condition "come" to always signal the end of play or getting into a crate. It should just be an interlude. Practice inside and build to 10 feet. Practice in the yard and build to 20 feet. Then start on distractions. Make it fun and cooperative. You could do all of this in a week if you practice each day. You'll get pretty good-not bomb proof-but pretty good. It'll only get better from there! Hope that helps! I imagine a video on this is coming down the pike soon.

Wyatt does not like his paws (mainly the back) touched. This is making it very difficult to get him groomed, and being a wheaten he MUST be groomed. I have been trying to gently and casually touch/brush his paws with one hand while I have a piece of freeze-dried liver in my other fist. Is this an acceptable way to try and get comfortable with someone touching his paws?
@SimpawticoDogTraining
@SimpawticoDogTraining 6 лет назад
Make sure the order is productive for you. It must be: touch the paw, food appears. In that order, every time. That's Classical Conditioning and it will help change his emotional expectation of having his paws touched. Don't try to use the food as a distraction; it's an exchange program and the food is programming his brain. As you work, you can push the envelope and get more manipulation with the paws because his comfort level will increase. Hope that helps!
