I've used the stick incense in a holder, and lightly tapped the stick to create a flow and movement within the smoke, as well as adding a very slight breeze to move the smoke about.
Love this tutorial. Great idea on inverting to change background to white, creates a completely new look. Will definitely be giving this a go. Thanks yet again Ben
Hi Ben,, great video as always. I did this recently for our local camera club comp. I used my macro lens and hand held the stick incense. By the time I was finished, my table was covered in ash, and me, my camera, and house smelt great! I also suspended a marble with string and let the smoke billow up around it. Yes it can get a little messy with the ash, but it's worth it for the photos and the aroma! The marble trick sounds really cool, I might try that next time! Thanks Andrea!
I change the color in LR by changing white balance. I have also played with gels over flash and adding color gradients in Photoshop playing with blend mode. The inverting the image sounds interesting. Nice video.
Yep, gels are another good way of doing it, though I did find that they sometimes reduce the contrast of the smoke so stuck with white against the black. I saw that you have tried inverting them in the Facebook group, looking good!

good vid, just to say didnt you think about changing the liveview image,so that it doesnt show the effect of changing settings?- I use it when my dof is high in macro shots and I can focus with no issues.Its very handy for macro with flash too.
Hi Paddy, not sure what you mean about not showing the effect of changing settings? Do you mean the focus peaking settings that give a yellow outline to in-focus areas?
@@Adaptalux no, in the menus you can select turning off the image preview(I assign trash button to turn it on/off), which wont lighten/darken/change dof of the picture you are about to take.Sorry it is hard to explain sometimes.
Hey Esther, for the stills you're going to need a flash to get them sharp like this, but the video elements are done with continuous light. The flash is just needed to freeze the motion of the smoke.
