I heard this definition of a Dream Job years ago, and it’s stuck: 1. love the company you work for (its values, mission, etc.), 2. love the people you work with, and 3. love the day-to-day tasks you’re doing. Easy, right?? 😂 I like the voiceover format. Well done and thank you, Ali!

I was very fortunate to know what I wanted to do in life at around 16 when I stumbled across the word "Computer Programming". I did not go to college but instead graduated from a 2 year "Technical Institute" with a degree in Computer Programming in 1974 ... 43 years later I retired never having worked a day in my life ... I could not believe companies were willing to pay me BIG money just to play all day long programming computers ... LOL

Ali has done it again! 😊. This video has opened my eyes to so many ways I can self reflect and find out more about me. One of my weaknesses is that I am good at helping people resolve their problems, but it drains me so bad because its so much talking. But one of my strengths, is that I enjoy listening and talking to people about things especially if its dealing with something positive, inspiring, and motivating. But Im really not a big talker.

I feel depressed and stuck at my current career. The work environment and dynamic has changed over the years. In the past because of the good rapport I had with my coworkers, I enjoyed coming to work everyday no matter how stressful it was but it’s so different now. We’ve had turnovers in the last few years plus a shift in our job responsibilities, also feeling unchallenged and unmotivated in my day to day tasks. I hope I’ll find a career or job I can enjoy and not feeling like I’ve worked a day in my life.

Redefining the concepts of strengths and weaknesses in this way sounds like a great idea... although in my case I feel like it leaves me pretty much where I started. I can think of a lot of weaknesses (things that drain me), but I'm still deeply uncertain what my strengths are (what energizes me), how to find them, or how to realistically leverage them. Lifelong depression does that, I guess, but maybe this idea can at least give me another angle of self-inquiry...
@mythicalnow
@mythicalnow 6 месяцев назад
Hey! Unfortunately depression and me are also acquainted. Maybe you find Simon Sinek's advice helpful! He recommends sitting down with a dear friend of yours and ask that friend: why are we friends? Skip the general part of trust and being there for them - that's a definition of a friend but not you. Go deeper, what feeling does your friend get when they hang out with you. What about you makes it so they love you. Sometimes we need an outside perspective on stuff
@hestiathena4917
@hestiathena4917 6 месяцев назад
@@mythicalnow Also very good advice... if you happen to have friends... Social interaction and maintaining casual relationships is one of my biggest weaknesses, in both conceptual definitions. 🤷‍♀

Career capital: The concept of "career capital" emphasizes building up valuable skills and experiences over time. This capital can be invested strategically to open up new opportunities and increase your career leverage. Deliberate practice: To achieve mastery, engage in deliberate practice-focused, intentional efforts to improve your skills. Consistent and purposeful practice is key to becoming exceptional in your field. These lessons advocate for a pragmatic and skill-focused approach to building a fulfilling career.

I'm trying figure out what I can do as a new career, spent 20+ years workings outside in the construction industry, worked in an elements, worked through pain, tiredness, depression, etc, I'm 38 years old and from years of busting my butt, I now have to go for surgery surgery for my arm in 6 months and was told by my doctors that i need to change careers, i basically need an office job that's less strenuous on my body, but it's hard because i worked in a job that didn't require me being on computers or using much academics, and I'm still working to get money saved up for when the surgery comes up but trying to be motivated to work on a new career is so hard, i live out of town and travel during the week, it's 2 hours travel a day, and after a hard day, which is usually 10 hour days plus the 2 for travel, so 12 dedicated to work life, my body is drained by time i get home sometimes i get home, shower, eat and just lay down, and my elbow is hurting more and more everyday so I'm facing mental problems not knowing what to do.

I have strong feeling of fortune-teller advises from this video. 2:34 WTF? How can it help you if everyone obviously will answer yes to all of them. 3:11 the same. It is rephrasing question "what do you want to do" when you want to find what you want to do. 4:08 if you did value test you know that this test are unreliable because you find that values "changes" with time(they don't change so fast, it is just unreliable test because it depends on your current state). I think to understand values you have to make them to compete. You need to put yourself in situation where, for example, curiosity and honesty contradict each other and you have to make choice. 6:38 Draining energy is very vague term here. For example, everyone who learn a hard concept knows that it drains your energy quickly, but this is how learning works(through mental efforts). If you are energized by learning, you learn something very familiar to you, so it feels effortless. In the end, I have impression that people are unsatisfied not with job itself, but with organization of work process in specific organization. 12:40 both sound equally bad for me. Just ask question what you want to know when "mentor" has time. 14:00 gremlins are overrated. When you see people who can do stuff which took week for you in one hour, because of their knowledge and experience, and you have to compete with them, it doesn't matter is they also have worries as you.
