45 minutes tip 1) get to the store early for big, best selection. 2)if you can smell it go for bubblegum scent but well ripened ones may not smell. 3)interior color should be dark yellow orange buy Precut to see interior 4)exterior color golden in color (of course this is opposite to fact in my experience) 5)flatter skin spikes instead of pointy skin spikes 6) soft to touch it should give a little or yield to general pressure 7)heavy for its size 8)shape. It funky... Ovalish on top and bottom not pointyish 9)size in general bigger is better but not always because they don't list veriety. Larger fruit hopefully on tree longer. Not too critical 10) some brown spotting can be indicator of ripeness or rot so look it over well. 11) tap/slap it should sound like watermelon. This vid is too long he yaps too much and someone said he didnt cut a ripe one open, so you cant see an example of how his tips work. After all he said he got them all because he felt each met enough of his criteria to be good fruit. So... I'm outta here!

I'm glad to know the ripe ones don't have the sticky sap to deal with! I bought a cut piece of ripe jack fruit at Global Foods Market, the best international foods store where I live, and used your excellent method of cutting, sans the oiling me and the knife. It worked perfectly! YUM!

My girlfriend is giggling as I write this because I just bought our first jackfruit from the store and I wished I had watched these tips first. I'm going to try and get my girlfriend to cook pulled-bbq style jack fruit for din din. But seriously, we do LOVE this video, thank you for taking the time! Sincerely, My girlfriend and I.

By far the best, best, best video in entire YT on jackfruits. Others talk about how to pick them from trees (which is almost non-existent), this is perfect as it talks about how to pick them up from the shop/store. 5-star video.

Listen I thought I was the one person in the world that loves Jackfruit the most. But my gosh, I can only take my hat off to you. The excitement in you, the inspiration, the way how you could easily lecture for 24 hours on the topic of jackfruit it is an honour. I do not fault you as some people critiquing you, all that you shared was relevant and informative. Great job....thank you much. PS. Thanks for letting me know you got it for 50c per lb. It was just yesterday I bought 2 Jackfruit in NJ @ whole foods for $2.49 per lb. Grand total $83..... the only consolation is though, that I actually drove 5 minutes from my home to get them. So it being my favourite fruit in the whole wide world, normally the cost of a plane ticket is associated with any opportunity I get to devour a Jackfruit. So it's pricey but I still feel like Charlie Sheen..... WINNING!!

Hi John, I was hoping you could do a video on all the great not so common fruits that could be grown in California. This year I already planted Anna apple, flora grande peach, plumcuots, mayfair nectarine, tangelo, Mandarin, blood orange, naval, goji berry, 2 pineapple guava, sorbet blueberry and a blackberry bush. You've inspired me and I already have 3 raised beds 3 ft by 6 ft with peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers. Really trying to grow the thingas that are the most exspensive to buy organic. Thanks

I have bought some Jack fruits from HEB in San Antonio and they all have been good. Yes, they are imported from Mexico. I usually let it sit until is almost getting to the point of getting rotten then I cut it all open and freeze what I do not eat. I took a seed and germinated it and I am currently growing it in a pot until it gets bigger. I am not sure if it will produce, but I am having fun seeing it grow.

I had a half Jack fruit from the store. They cut it for me and I finished it off with my mom. I liked it and my mom liked it. Always weird when it's the first time. To us it had a mango and melon flavor. Loved it. I would buy again soon. .59 cents or so a pound. I paid under 5 dollars for half PC. Good stuff. Next time I'll roast the seeds or boils. Can't wait.

John, I used your tips, got a good one, was my first time having jack fruit (other than premade bbq or taco package). Was great! really enjoyed it!. Thank you for the video! I enjoy it when you introduce us to a fruit and demonstrate how to enjoy it! I roasted the seeds for 10 minutes in the air fryer, was enjoyable, neutral flavor, soft texture. I read the seeds contain some compounds that need to be eliminated by heat processing them, like having to heat process mushrooms. Thank you again for the video!

Great video. VERY informative! I just bought my first Jackfruit wedges yesterday at Whole foods. VERY expensive but affordable based on your info. I paid $3.99/lb. I got two came they were so good. One of the produce person's offered to open one for me to taste and I was hooked! It was 6PM and Hadn't eaten all day. I ate 3/4 of a pod and it sustained me till 11:00PM! Yes, I was ripped off, price wise, but based on the excellent info you gave I can pick one out myself at the Oriental market! I also read that this fruit is a great Cancer fighter and LOADED with the best fits. and minerals!

Great Video. I have loved Jackfruit since I was a kid and moved to the Philippines and India. I have found that it is far less messy to wait until you are all done to use Coconut oil. Once you are ready to clean up the latex rub coconut oil into and onto everything that has latex on it, then wash it off with liquid dish soap. Like you say, if they are good and ripe they don't have that much latex anyway. :-)

Smells like bubblegum, ripe n reedy golden darkish is best, spikes r smoothe, n ripe is yielding to pressure, poke n pick one that gives sum dentation... Weight is good for juice...small n heavy is okay... Long stem, brown spotting is tricky...could go either way lol...so much to learn here... good luck 💗🙏

So that biggest green jackfruit on your counter. How long would it normally take on your counter to ripen?
@amc8409
@amc8409 6 лет назад
To make it faster, here are his tips (actually 12, not 10): 1) Go to where they sell a lot of jackfruit-- better selection, better price. 2) Smell them-- bubblegum is what you're going for. 3) Interior color (if buying pre-cut fruit)-- vibrant yellow or orange, not white or pale. 4) Exterior color-- not dark green (unripe), but lighter green with golden/brown spots (see #11) 5) Bumps/spikes--compare a very-bumpy one with a not-so-bumpy...the less-bumpy ones are more ripe. 6) Yields to gentle pressure (especially on brown spots), but not mushy (like an avocado). 7) Should be heavy for its size (hold & compare different sizes & their weights)...the heavier, the better (juicier, sweeter). 8) Nicely round all over. If it's pointy at the top, there's possibly no fruit inside the pointy area. If it's lumpy, it may be rotten. 9) Bigger is not always better. There are different varieties (just like watermelon). But, bigger ones might have been on the tree longer, so it might be more ripe. 10) Wider stem might mean better fruit. 11) Brown spotting- may mean more ripe. Could be bruising or rot, so make sure your finger doesn't go through (that's rot). Make sure it gives to pressure, but doesn't stay dented. *if most of the fruit is good & you decide to keep it, eat it soon, or cut off the rotted part & put it in the fridge. 12) It should sound hollow (like a watermelon).
