TLDR; I knew nothing about distributors when I purchased a MSD StreetFire 8362 from a well known auto parts store. Spent 2 months troubleshooting my tune to find out it was a defective due to excessive shaft play side to side. CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY. Had some time to give the 350 some love and decided it needed a new intake manifold and dizzy. So I got an edelbrock performer and msd streetfire dizzy because i was running stock parts and wanted to dress it up a bit. This was my first time doing both an intake manifold and a distributor so I did everything by the book and double/triple checked everything during the removal/install. Pretty simple job that I feel even a novice could do. I set initial timing to 12 and tuned carb by ear. At idle and low load she ran great and sounded great but if i put the engine under any sort of load (like a hill, accelerating up to highway speed, or passing) the engine would misfire until i let the throttle out. I spent the next 2 months trying to figure it out. First I checked the timing as best I could with my old ass timing light. It seemed good but still misfired underload. I bought a vacuum gauge to tune the carb better. Tuned it and it seemed a bit better but still misfired under load. Tried to turn down vacuum advance and found out the streetfire is falsely advertised and DOES NOT have an adjustable vacuum canister. So I plugged the ports on my carb and checked for the problem. STILL THERE. I figured I must have timed it wrong somehow so I asked a mechanic to look at it for me. We retuned my carb for best vacuum at fastest leanest idle (16" @ 800rpm in gear) and set my total timing to 32 degrees at 3400 rpm and she seemed to be running better than ever before but the problem still shows up when trying to go uphill. I began tearing my hair out trying to fix this issue. Cap looked good so I tested the coil. It tested good but I replaced it and the cap anyways. I checked the 12v power. Power is good. Checked my ground. Ground is good but I spliced in a direct ground to the battery because of the aluminum intake can have grounded issues according to msdtech. Same problem still even with direct ground. Changed the module with a known good module. Same problem still. At this point the only thing I have not replaced are the mechanical advance(curve seems good, stops at 32 degrees all in around 3100) and the magnetic pickup coil. I pulled the dizzy out once again to test and possibly change the pickup when I finally found what was wrong. I was just looking at the pickup and spinning it in my hand when i noticed it seemed to have different levels of magnetism as i rotated it. While hold the dizzy still, I grabbed the rotor and rocked it side to side. I could literally feel what I assume is bearing play in the main shaft. Runs fine at low speeds/low loads but once you get around 3k rpm, that excessive play was causing the magnetic pickup to vary. Compared it against my 30+ year old stock unit and my stock unit had zero side to side play so I put it back in and the problem disappeared entirely. Luckily, I was able to get a full refund but I sure am disappointed in MSD. While trying to solve this issue, I have found countless people experiencing similar and other problems with this distributor.

Hello guys. I have an Lt1 and done head work and a cam swap. Also played hell trying to find a reputable tuner that is capable since everyone is LS these days. I have seen the MSD opti replacement. On dyno my car hit 270hp at 4700 and flat lined. I suspect a spark loss. It maintained 13.1 a/f ratio and didn't run lean. So I guess I maintain fuel pressure.

+steve murphy, The MSD-8386 would be a great upgrade for that. When used along with the matching ignition coil and wire set, would much better than the OE setup. www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-8386/overview/year/1977/make/dodge/model/d200

Got an 84 Nissan Datsun Kingcab 720 automatic 2.4 L RWD, I got the MSD 6al part 6420, and I want to know what I need to complete the setup. A mechanic said I need and electric type distributor because mines a point distributor and the MSD box would ruin it if I hook it up without swapping out the distributor. Is this correct? Do I need a whole new distributor if I want to use the MSD 6AL?

Thanks for the many great videos! QUESTION: Could you recommend a upgraded distributor for my 1976 cj7 jeep with 258 I6? I am going from a prestolite ignition to a GM TBI with fuel injection and a ecm.. Hope to allow the ecm to control spark/timing... :) Oh, by the way... I believe my cam shaft is soft iron, do you sell the dizzys specifically for the set up I'm trying to attain?

Tramain Jackson , The MSD-8529 would be a great way to go. It is a ready to run which means it does not need an MSD ignition box to run but, one can be added at a later date if you choose. It also has a vacuum advance to add some street driving manners. +Chino Travy, For street cruising applications the “Ready to Run” distributor series and matching coil from MSD is a great way to go. For your engine size & type those part numbers are MSD-8360 & MSD-8202 and are in stock ready to go. For spark plug wires, there is a multitude of choices from color to wire diameter and boot angles. I have a 1972 Lincoln mark iv with the 460. Which complete kit would be best for my application? Thanks
@SummitRacing
@SummitRacing 8 лет назад
+odog47, If your car will be street driven and not raced a simple upgrade to an MSD ready to run distributor and coil will be a great choice over the factory points style distributor your engine had originally. If you will be stepping it up and adding a Nitrous kit or Supercharger, then an MSD Digital 6 ignition box can be added and will assist in lighting off all the additional fuel in the cylinder. Give us a call and we can get you setup properly depending on your specific need. 1-330-630-0240. Thanks for watching!

@SummitRacing

+Chris Ward, Due to its multiple spark technology (low RPM) and increased spark duration at higher at higher RPM ranges, an MSD box would indeed be beneficial all the way down the track, not just “out of the hole”!

@SummitRacing
@SummitRacing 3 года назад
Ignition choice comes down to application, preference, and budget. While all MSD distributors improve ignition performance, the Pro-Billet distributor with a multi-spark box is the most effective setup. Multi-spark boxes provide the hottest spark, but the tradeoff is additional wear on distributor cap, rotor, and plugs. Contact our sales team @ 1-800-230-3030 to discuss the best options for your application.
