Today I want to talk about color and how you can use basic color theory to pick a color palette for your wardrobe that you love. One thing not discussed in this video is how hair color and eye color play into all of this, but I will be discussing that in another video soon. *Also, in case it helps you to better understand your own undertone I'm a medium olive with high contrast (my hair and eyes are much darker than my skin), that can appear warm depending on what I'm wearing. Foundations that are too yellow turn bright orange on me and foundations that are too neutral can appear too pale and just not right. My ideal shades are usually a mix of both and I tend to have better luck with neutral undertones that are sheered out and warmed up with blush and bronzer (Tarte Amazonian Clay in Exposed is a great one for this), than I do with warm undertones. Some of my favorite true olive foundations are by Giorgio Armani, Makeup Forever, Koh Gen Do & Alima Pure but I've also had great luck with BareMinerals (because it's so sheer), Chanel (their now discontinued Perfection Lumiere in shade 30 was perfect for me!) & some Lancome, Dior & YSL in the past.

A tip for all who are struggeling to figure out their undertone: dress in warm colours, wear a warm-red lipstick, put gold jewellery on and then take or let someone take pictures of yourself in daylight. Do the same with cool colored clothes, a cool red lipstick and silver jewellery. Then look at the pictures. You will see, what fits you better!! It's not the same like just looking in the mirror! Trust me, that's how I found out that I'm definitely warm. Good luck!

Thank you so much! I am clearly a Neutral in undertones...and prefer rose gold or antiqued silver (more muted) jewelry rather than bright silver. I find that in the winter I am drawn to pastels and soft color accents while in the spring and summer I bring in soft corals and blues. At 65 years young it is very fun to be finally curating my own style! Your channel is an enormous help.

Many years ago (too many to mention), I had my colors done professionally. I so wanted to be an autumn but was told I was a winter. I will have to admit that I do look best in colors with cool undertones. My clothes are full of black, white, charcoal, deep rose, cobalt blue, emerald green, and ruby red. I have grown to love these colors and appreciate how I look in them. Thank you so much for all of your videos. I have learned a great deal.

Three years ago I decided to stop coloring my brown hair and turns out I have beautiful salt and pepper. I always gravitated to black and turns out it is one of my best colors to accentuate my hair color. I have included shades of grey, white and dark denim to make a base for the jewel tones I use for cardigans and accesories such as scarves, jewelry, etc. Great video....my coloring is defintely cool💚

Like others here I had my Colours done by Colour me Beautiful,thirty plus years ago...back then I was a winter...then had them done again year later and I was a cool winter ...a few more years later I had them and I was still cool....but now with age etc...I'm a soft ...so with age and hair colour loss it's changing...and I have to adjust my thinking...colours I once wore no longer work with my skin tone...so I feel you need to check these things every ten years maybe...too easy as you get older to continue what worked when you were young. The trick to wearing a colour you like but not in your pallet is to not wear it close to your face... Black evening dresses drain my skin tone so I go for a lower neck line...and add pearls to break up the black neck line as they are kind to your face skin tone when black can be harsh. So another tip with a colour that's not for you is add pearls or a scarf. To soften the impact on your face skin..etc. Love the videos...

I had my colors done by a CMB rep in the early 80s. I too was a Winter simply because I did have cool undertones and had dark brown hair and brown/green hazel eyes. Black didn't do me any favors. Now I know I'm Soft Summer and much more at ease in my new colors. I think I was a SS all along, I just needed the system to expand.

@@marylou807 I had my colors done also in the 80s and was a Spring. I had my colors done again in 2013 with my daughter, which was really fun, and was told I am a Blue Spring. I think it's so important to wear the right colors!

I was going to mention this point, too! If you want to wear a color that doesn't bring out your features, wear it somewhere not right next to your face! Shoes, pants, handbag, etc! (Or even, like you said, it could be on top, but broken up with a scarf!). I know that black isn't the best color for me, in terms of bringing out my natural coloring... However, I love how easy it is to match, how slimming it is, and how sophisticated it looks! So, I have a ton of black clothes, but try to pair them with other colors that are more flattering to me near my head!

I noticed age difference as well....as I got older my hairdresser wanted to lighten my medium brown hair with some golden lightening and it suited me better....I was an autumn and bolder rather than soft. Dark eyebrows, light brown eyes, fair skin, and now I’m warm and soft ....(wanna hug) lol Actually subtle changes with age can be kicked up or down with style, accessories and colours worn with confidence! I think we are drawn to our own colours and styles if we listen to our own natural attractions...stop thinking or letting the noise rule and incline ourselves to what is truly speaking to us!💕

I wear lots of color but still use my color palette I had done as a kid. 25 yrs later, it helps me still pick shades that work best. I will wear colors that don’t work, ie black, because it’s so easy, but stick with accessories and keeping the color away from my face. It makes me feel prettier, which always helps!

Years ago I met with a Color Me Beautiful expert and found out that I was a Winter (jewel tones). It was definitely a Eureka experience - I finally understood why I looked just ok in some things and great in other things. It significantly simplified my shopping expeditions as well. What I’ve noticed is that the palette can change or expand as I change my hair color and makeup. So with bronzer, honey highlights in my hair, and brownish lipstick, I can pull off beige (a definite no-no for Winters) very well.

One of my favorite topics! And special thanks for acknowledging us lighter-skinned olives! Yes, finding the right foundation has been a lifelong struggle! My color palette is high-contrast and full of bold color: BLACK, , which I always feel amazing in because it makes my skin glow, true WHITE, true (or even a slightly warm) RED, my favorite color. Those are my go-to colors. Built around those are: olive green, a bright/almost neon yellow, deep royal purple, & hot pink. Looking for a bright royal blue top lately, also. And of course I wear neutrals like navy, denim, beige, grey (darker greys flatter me more). Basically my colors have to be super saturated to flatter me, as I look sickly or washed out with muted colors near my face. So no pastels for me! I know there are other colors that don't necessarily look good on me, like coral, chartreuse, camel, & golden yellow. BUT but I love golden yellow it so I wear it anyways because it makes me happy. Yeah the reason I still find it so difficult to place my coloring is cos I tick all the olive undertone boxes EXCEPT that I don't look so great in olive, and gold is so not my color (any other metal tone looks great tho). What I have come to realise about myself is that as long as there is a slightly pink undertone (and I hate pink) present I'll probably get away with wearing that color (I can wear a lot of colors that are out of the scope of cool winter which ppl were convinced I was and then there are colours there I can't wear). So a cool overtone with an olive undertone is probably as close as I'm gonna get I think. Mostly I know when a color suits me or not anyway, especially as I get older

Seriously, read Carole Jackson's "Color Me Beautiful." If you look good in dark brown, and if pink looks awful on you, you are probably an Autumn.

Based on your little pic (could be the lighting) and your description, I would first test autumn colors on you. I'm similar - corals (and orange-based shrimpy shades) and the occasional dusty rose are the only pinks I have found that work on me. I'm between soft and true autumn.

Whenever I wear beige and beautiful brown colors people always pay their attention. I think this happens because these colors give people sense of security ( because the ground is brown) and also sense of wealth. It’s just my opinion but beige is my favorite color that works for me and makes me feel warm and cozy in winter and sexy and elegant in summer. Thank you for the video! ❤️

For anyone neutral, but still having difficulty finding your best colours, it might be helpful to determinate if youre slightly warm or slightly cool and the best way i found was to take a cool pink and a peachy coloured pencil and put them against my skin, worked better than any method ever

Great video! Personally, I cannot wear pastels. Especially pink. I have a pinkish complexion with cool undertones. I look like Piglet whenever pink gets near me. Whenever I wear a saturated royal or teal blue, everyone thinks I’m gorgeous. 🤣

I found this topic so interesting. There is a book called "Color Me Beautiful" by Carole Jackson. It includes color charts etc........and divides people up based on their skin tone into either Winter Spring Summer of Fall color pallets..........I am definitely a winter and look good in pure white etc.........It is incredible to see the difference clothing can have on a person's appearance if they are wearing the correct colors for their skin tone...........It came out in 1980 but I think you would enjoy reading it.

It's funny, people sometimes make fun of Color Me Beautiful, but when I got tested or whatever you'd call it, gold fabric made me look like I have liver disease, and silver fabric absolutely made my skin glow. And I look best in jewel tones, pure white, pale pink, navy; so there must be something to it!

@@conniefrank6895 from what I understand, the first Color Me Beautiful was perhaps a little too simplistic. I knew someone who loved Fall colors, got "misdiagnosed" as a Winter, but had it redone and found she was a _cold_ Fall as they put it. She now wears the cool version of Fall colors and it suits her so well. I heard somewhere that they now have 12 categories instead of just four. Having my colors done was an eye opener. I wad told I'm a Spring, but now I'm a bit of a crossover to Summer; though not fully. And of course, not all consultants are equally talented or equally well trained. That's part of where the sneer comes from.

Audrey, your videos are so enjoyable. I love your elegant and timeless style. Years ago I was identified as on the "cusp" between Spring and Autumn (in the Color Me Beautiful categories). I was told when growing up that redheads should never wear red, so I didn't, just stuck to autumn colors. But, now a slightly warm red is one of my wardrobe mainstays, and I enjoy wearing it. I travel often which helps me pare down my clothes to basic colors, playing with accent color ideas, and identify my style preferences as bohemian, timeless, and romantic. It took me years to finally find my true color palette. I use to love warm toned colors like rusty orange, burgundy deep red and i always felt that those colors were super unflattering on me, it took me a while to finally get rid of everything warm toned and start my wardrobe from scratch. I'm cool toned and gold jewellery looks best on me when I'm fair (winter/spring) but i avoid gold when I'm tan in the summer.my wardrobe is alot more organized now, i have mainly light blues greys black and white and cool toned colors like red and yellow and it's alot more easier to dress in the morning now. The most important part is that everything i have in my closet is flattering on my skin, no more dressing up and all and then looking like I'm sick in the photos lol . Understanding your color palette is the key to your dream wardrobe 👌

Hi Audrey, Thank you for another great video that is classy and coherent. It took me until my 50’s to realize that I like wearing ONLY white, black, grey, and blue. This reality has saved me a lot of hassle and money spent on colors that I like in theory, but don’t enjoy wearing. I keep if fun with texture, patterns, and jewelry accents. It also makes getting ready very easy because everything goes with everything else!

Excellent video. New sub. As a dress consultant at Macy’s (‘80s), and working in a fabric store (‘90s), when people wanted color advice, I’d ask them if they preferred gold or silver jewelry, and what colors were they wearing when others remarked how well they looked. In the fabric store, I’d have them hold up pure bright white or yellow undertoned beige fabric bolts under their faces and stand in front of a mirror. The choice was usually obvious. I’ve always been a winter. Cool skin, brown eyes, salt/pepper hair, silver jewelry. If there’s a color I love but can’t wear (like lush orange), it either becomes part of my home decor, or is mixed in with a good (for me) color. A beautiful scarf blending deep red and lush orange, for instance.

Color - one of my favorite topics! If I love a certain color but find it doesn't suit my complexion, I use it as an accent piece, like a belt or shoes (some of the best pieces for fun colors, IMO). I look forward to more videos on this topic, I enjoy your approach. On neutrals, a predominant color in your wardrobe that is versatile and matches most everything else in your wardrobe could be considered "neutral", such as olive, sage green, gray, or pale pink.

I always struggled with my color because while I knew I was in the deep area of colors, I could never figure out my undertone.. I'm usually pale, but my skin tends to have this very obvious yellow glow. Not like the warm, rich color you get from, say, Beyonce... But not cool either. And then you mentioned the green tint and how olive tones can be light too! It got me thinking... I will have to reconsider my palette!! But my signature colors have always been emerald, navy, and "true red" as you put it... In any event, I really enjoyed your video and I think I am going to binge watch the rest. So classy!!

I'm a colour lover, so I don't necessarily stick to a simplified colour palette but I do have my favourites and I try to work around those. For neutrals I tend to go with black, soft white, grey and I have a few pieces in navy and dark green. I do have a skirt in tan, but tan doesn't work near my face so I pair that with a colour that does or chocolate brown which I can wear. For colours, in the fall winter I tend to go with red, darker pinks, emerald green, royal blue, etc. In the spring/summer paler versions of the same colours and light lemon yellow. I think I'm more cool toned, but I do have a bit of gold in my otherwise ash brown hair and I can wear a brick red just as well as cranberry, so I know there can be exceptions to the cool/warm "rules". I don't think my skin tone is neutral though either, because most warm colours I have a hard time wearing with a few specific exceptions.

I really enjoy your videos! You give such sensible, timeless advice and your delivery is so polished, yet you also come across very personable and friendly. I think I have more pieces that are my accent colors in my wardrobe (emerald green, bright blue and plum/eggplant) but a good chunk of my skirts and trousers are in neutrals and all of my main stay accessories are in black, tan or silver :) This was very helpful for figuring out if I'm warm or cool toned :D Cheers!

Wow you just changed my world - I could NEVER quite find my undertone...I always thought I was maybe neutral or leaning towards cool, but at the same time, it never quite worked for me...but olive!? I'm so pale I never considered it, but now I see it! - the green as you say...it's there! I love you’re videos- the most useful tips! I looked at my wardrobe today and discovered unknowingly I’ve been following some of your tips - my neutrals are black, navy and white. My accent colours are blue and blush pink ( what I thought was a camel coat is actually blush pink!)

Love your blogs, Audrey, I got into you because my name is also Coyne & there aren't that many of us! This Coyne however is red haired. I always felt disappointed when I saw your basic colors. I am so fair if I wear black or white I look like I've been dead for 3 days & don't have enough sense to stop walking around & lie down. I like gray & purple, but they have the same effect. It's very difficult to find a good basic color because manufacturers tend to offer the colors that everyone can wear because they are more profitable. Keep up the good work!

It took me a while to figure out that I 100% have a warm undertone, because I'm a pale redhead, and it seemed a given I'd have a cool undertone. Not so! I look ghastly in cool or frosty tones, or anything like a pale peach or pink. Once I figured this out, it became so much easier for me to find clothing I just feel better and fresher-looking in. Thanks for the video Audrey, I always enjoy getting your take.

This is Ms Rundle, and I am in my younger 70s, and found that starting around 50 to 60s I found that bright white, which was always a “go to” For me, but your teeth begin to yellow, naturally, which is why pearls flatter us so well. White only accents this contrast. I’ve taken to lightly dipping a WHITE shirt in a touch of tea to dull it a bit. All teas are not created equal...so do some testing first.

I have always shied away from BLACK or bright WHITE as I am a definite fair skinned & warm toned (complete with copper red hair) person. However I have always wanted to add black because it adds that classic touch to any outfit. And now I see the possibilities from your video - I immediately could see wearing my tan jacket with a black top & pants! The jacket would highlight the warm tones of my skin while contrasting well with the black! thank you for a great video that will inspire others to feel confident with their colour choices.

I am so happy to have found your videos. Weirdly enough my overtone changed as I got older pushing me more neutral than my previous pinky complexation. I didn't even realize until I watched this video and was like how do I have blue veins but mostly pink when I put a paper next to my skin? Excellent! I tend to dress exclusively in beige, greens and copper colors. Now I'm a little excited to see what else I can play with!

I always love color theory videos. I am a neutral to warm skin tone, and I notice I look best in deep colors. Burgundy, Emerald Green, Chocolat Brown things like that. Luckily those are also a few of my favorite colors. Only I look like crap in blush pink, which is a shame because I love that color too. But if I try something in blush pink on in the store, I always feel I look sick. My solution to this is making sure there is a different color between the blush pink and my face. So I'll either wear a blush skirt with a black or white top. Or I wear blush pink as a print. (as I'm typing this I'm wearing a black top with blush pink flowers)

First off I want to say I love your videos, great information on clothing, etc. Over 20 years ago I had my colors done and noticed that it was spot on regarding the colors I look good in. I did notice that when I wore certain colors that I should stay away from many people at work would come up to me and ask if I was tired or ill! LOL

Great video as always! I struggle with my colors. Veins and eyes say warm. My base colors are brown and olive, and black/bright white. Love pinks, from pale to coral. Navy and pastel blues wash me out. Animal print, adore! You’re helping me to look at my wardrobe in a whole new light.

Thanks for this. I never wear hot pink. I have ‘red’ hair. Which is truly closer to orange. And warm undertones. So greens are my go to. I love Browns also but so hard to find them consistently. I mostly wear neutrals. Black, cream(never met a cream sweater i didn’t like) , camels, grays (away from my face), and of course blue denim.

I’m a new subscriber and I really can’t tell what my undertone is. One wrist my veins look blue, but the other wrist looks green. So maybe I can be a dual color person. I just wear what I think looks good against my skin of my neck and face. I used to look good in a kind of peachy color. But not that I’m older I don’t look so good in that color. I love your videos. I’ve had to pick and choose the ones that interest me now. Or I would never sleep. And your voice is so calming. You give great information.

Years ago I did a Color One and Color Me Beautiful seminar. I was and am confused. I have very blonde hair, pale skin (but horribly “red-faced” according to my mother), and blue eyes. Couldn’t decide if i was a summer or spring. I always get compliments when wearing pastel pink and blue, but also the clear jewel tones and ALWAYS black. To further complicate, when I wear black and red together, say a black blazer and red turtleneck, I get loads of compliments (sounds like a winter or bold). Silver jewelry looks best as does white, rather than beige/cream. Fall and muted colors are not good for me. I look like death, except clear orange looks really good. I can’t wear blue reds...must be orange reds. I just make sure the colors I wear are clear and not muted or dusty and stay away from drab. Seems like either color one or color me beautiful said a person can wear any color, IF it is the right shade, hue, tint. Sometimes, I get compliments that are general and sometimes the person specifically mentions the color. I can’t go wrong with pink/red for daytime, and black for evening.

I've always had problems figuring out my undertone but because of this video I finally figured it out! I have dark blond hair, light skin, green eyes, neutral undertones and gold suits me best so I think I'm warm. I love wearing navy and green and sometimes burgundy and I've always hated pastel colours on me and now I know why :) Great video!

E.hiem, I have the same situation, I have light rosey skin, green eyes, and lt brown hair...yellow gold works best and I also love wearing green, navy and black....aren't those cool colors? I'm still a bit confused LOL Although at my age, I know what looks best on me and what I look good in and I guess that's what I am going with.

Thank you Audrey, an excellent video with lots of interesting and useful information. I will have to check out my colour tone as I am not exactly sure what that is. My base colours tend to be black, grey and white in the winter; navy, grey and white in the spring and summer but I love to wear autumn shades in the Fall whether they suite me or not. My favourite accent colours tend to be bright reds and yellows, (I’ve just bought some super new mustard yellow trousers which look wonderful with black, brown or navy and animal prints) but sometimes I like to wear muted accents such as light pinks and blues.

I'm a neutral/olive. I live in gray, navy, black and plum. Not liking to color block, i typically dress head to toe in primarily one color, usually with my top having some interest (eg rouching, pattern, layers). I don't wear trends and love thrifting. My wardrobe is small, but i love each piece. Thank you for your tips, they are always thoughtful.

I love this topic so much! I definitely stick to the colors I love and the colors that suit me. I can't stick to the typical seasonal color chart because warm and cool tones can work for me. It really depends. Neutral foundations look too pink on me (my husband will mention I look pale or am wearing a foundation that looks to pale for me). Yellow foundations usually run too dark for my skin, making it look orange. If I can find a pale yellow or a true olive undertone then I'm great! The best winter time foundation shade I've found is Nars Ceylon. Thanks for your recommendations as well!

Audrey, I am so glad you've mentioned Cool Olive because most people don't know that such thing exists. I am my husband's "personal stylist" (I buy all his clothes as he has no sense of style or shape) and at some point I've realized that he looks terrible in beiges, browns, army greens, oranges etc. (all warm colors) and I was perplexed at first because he is asian. After lengthy research I've determined that he is a very cool-toned olive (think cool-toned green). Now I only buy black, grey and blue clothes for him and they look wonderful on him. It also helps that he is a minimalist and doesn't need ton of color in his wardrobe.

Like your videos as it relieves me to see that yes, other women understand the impact of dressing and fashion in our lives. When Oscar de la Renta brought out his collection with dark Navy as the base color I adopted it. I preferred navy ever since I was a teenager. I have a few black pieces, pair of pants, pencil skirt, and going out black dress with silk transparent scarf, black purse, pumps, and flats. Your video made me realize I should be more deliberate, which will made my wardrobe work better.
