It isn't summer until you've had your first watermelon of the season. Chances are though, it's been about a year since you've bought your last watermelon. Do you remember how to pick out a good one?
Many people have no idea how to select a watermelon. They just knock on this over-sized fruit as if they know what they are doing. Although it can be difficult to know how ripe the interior is just by inspecting the outside, there are several clever tricks you can learn to help you pick the perfect watermelon.
1.Lift a few
The watermelon should be heavy for its size, as this indicates that it is full of water and therefore nice and ripe. Try comparing the weight of your watermelon with another of equal size - the heavier one will be the riper. This advice goes for most fruits and vegetables.
2.Look for the field spot. The underside of the watermelon should have a creamy yellow spot, known as the field spot. This is where the melon sat on the ground and ripened in the sun, so the darker it is the better! This one is no wives' tale. If the field spot is white, or even nonexistent, this probably means that the watermelon was picked too soon, and will not be ripe.
3.Inspect the color. A perfect, ripe watermelon should be dark green in color and dull in appearance, rather than shiny. A shiny watermelon will usually be under ripe.
4.Say no to stem
If the melon still has a stem on it, move along. This means the melon didn't come off the vine easily so it wasn't quite ripe. You could look for a melon with a slightly indented end. This indicates that the melon came off the vine on its own.
5.What about knocking?
knocking is pointless, however you can hold the watermelon like you're cradling a baby and give it a good thwap, you'll feel the vibrations in your bottom hand if the watermelon is right.
6.What about selecting a pre-cut melon? If you're purchasing pre-cut watermelon, there are also certain things to look out for. Choose pieces with bright red flesh and dark brown or black seeds. Avoid pieces with white streaks and an abundance of white seeds. You should also steer clear if the flesh looks dried out or mealy, or is separating from the seeds.
Now, What about you? Do you have any tricks to pick a perfect watermelon?

I actually used to work part time at a farm where we used to pick watermelons when I was in high school. The knocking is not pointless. If you knock the watermelon in the middle and it sounds hollow like a n empty wooden box it is ripe. If it sounds like a solid noise its unripe. The farmers family taught us that they had been growing watermelons for 5 generations Heirloom watermelons only.

That is right. I was surprised she said it's pointless but then only experienced people use the sound test. I'm not super accurate but my dad is. He's always correct when selecting out ripe melons from the garden.

lharchmage I agree. My tip is the louder the watermelon, the sweeter it is, because it has less water in it. Thus its juice is more concentrated. I came from a tropical climate, we don't buy watermelon during rainy season. Usually, they are watery and tasteless.

I agree with you,when you hear a low sound like it is hollow when thumping on it,that is the best sign that it is ripe.The other ways this video tell you if the water is ripe is only secondary.

The sound that comes out from knocking it is the most reliable way of telling how ripe melons are and this is why melons farmers use only this method. The only problem is it takes a while to learn the different pitch.

Eron Dane I agree. My father would pluck them until he was satisfied with what he heard and he was always right. I use the field spot, the stem and the all knowing pluck. Although I haven't been as accurate as he was, I do very well in choosing when to cut melons.

I look for the ones with the biggest bright yellow spots on the watermelon. After this, I start thumping the middle of them to hear which ones has a hollow sound. I then put those to the side and after that, I pick the one that's heavier for the size. Never been wrong, unless it's not watermelon season. In which case, I ago get a crunchy, somewhat sweet watermelon. When they're in season, I've never chose a non sweet watermelon.

There are several steps to pick a great watermelon 1. Sound is important high tone sound under ripe, very low tone it usually is over ripe. This does not work on all melons if the melon heart splits the sound is changed. 2. With your thumb push on rind if pushes in very much the melon is over ripe. 3. Color and underside mentioned in video is correct. Look for what that little area on some melons where the sap has came out and makes a little ball. Most people call this a bee sting ( I do not know for sure) but if it meets the other tests this melon will be very sweet. This has never failed me. 4. It is always better in my mind to have a slightly under ripe melon rather than an over ripe one unless you like mushy water melon. 5. Comparing weight really only tells you it has a lot of water and it is farther along that some but still may not be ripe. 6. The other day an old man at least older than me showed me a trick he uses but who know he takes his finger nail and try to scratch the skin if it does not do so easily it if under ripe if it scratches easily it is ripe but it could also be really over ripe. I buy many watermelons every year and very seldom do I get a bad one, this is good since I will not eat a bad overripe watermelon. I feed it to our horses. I raise my own and sill use multiple checks to determine which melon I will buy or pick. Practice, Practice, Practice makes perfect

Look for lots of little brown lines or patches on the field spot. I was told by a produce manager that it means the bees and wasps have been at that melon, and feed off the sugary sweet juice that drips out. This test has never failed me when choosing a melon. If none of them have that yellow field spot with the little brown lines, I just don't buy a melon that day.

knocking the watermelon is NOT pointless. you just gotta know what you're hearing. should sound hollow. works 9/10 times for me. only reason why it doesn't work is because I'm in a hurry n don't take my time checking. now the "heavy for it's size", i DISAGREE. yes they're ripe and full of water BUT that can also mean they're OVERRIPE. the knocking beats the heaviness everytime i did it. whenever i picked the heaviness, they're either starting to/is overripe. so they're not as sweet/crunchy and some spots are soggy. so those ones, i cut n freeze for smoothies.
@Bob_Adkins

Your tips are right on! Local water melons are better when you pick one after a 2 week dry spell. The sugar to water ratio is slightly higher. Avoid picking 1-5 days after a rain. Some melons actually have small, sticky dark spots on the rind where they weep sugary water. These melons are usually sweeter. Buy your melon AFTER July 4th. Cheaper, and usually sweeter!

The last time I had an amazing watermelon was when I was 7 I believe. If you have ever been fortunate enough to taste those really red and sweet watermelons then you'll know they'll have this sweet SMELL wafting up at you. That was almost 20 years ago... wow. Just realised that. Every now and then whenever I eat a watermelon I try to smell it up close and just be able to recognise that distinct sweet smell just to remember the ripe smell 20 years ago. That's how good a perfect watermelon is.

Thanks for the tips on how to pick out a ripe melon. I have had good luck by choosing the watermelons that are good and hard and do not give if you press down firmly with your thumb. @paulm7347
@paulm7347 6 лет назад
Thumping/ knocking works only if you have enough experience to know what you are listening and feeling for. When I Thump or knock, I am listening for a very deep sound. The whole melon should vibrate well and it is a full vibration. If the sound is very deep and vibrates well it is spot on ready and will be very sweet. If the sound has any kind of high pitch to it or does not vibrate well, move on as it is not a well ripe melon and you will be very disappointed in having gotten it. Again, it is experience. Used to live next to a Watermelon grower who also ran one of the largest roadside melon stands in my region. He taught me what to look for. The advise about field mark needing to be dark is correct and accurate. However, the dark green and dull looking comment is not accurate and is actually not good advise. If the Melon is very dark green and very dull, move on. Why? There is such a thing as over ripe watermelon. They generally have sour notes, no flavor at all or have a rotting type of note on your taste buds.
@RaechelleBennett782

paul M Actually, watermelons can be over ripe. I cut into one that looked perfect on the outside but full of smelly water and mush in the inside. It was obviously sitting in a warehouse or storage area too long.
@makgarden5284
@makgarden5284 3 года назад
Agree with lharchmage (with one exception - read below) Good tips, but knocking is not pointless. However, it requires a bit of training and experience to go by the sound. If the sound is kind of hollow, reverberating this means that the watermelon is ripe, crisp and full of juice. A "thump", flat sound means that the fruit was picked while still not fully ripe, and the flesh will most likely be a bit compact, or even spongy with less colour and less taste. But beware! If the sound is too hollow the fruit is likely to be over-ripe, and therefore tasteless, with soggy texture and even holes around where the seeds are. Generally speaking, among fruits of similar size, the heaviest one with clearest sound is likely to be the best one. And, as the video shows, check the field spot, stem spot and general colour and shine. My grandfather grew superb, honey-sweet, gigantic watermelons (I still dream about them...) He used to say that a watermelon that "sings" is the one you want to pick (from the vine or from the seller's stand) :D Bon apetit, and thanks to all the people who made funny comments - made me smile :D

Just because a watermelon is very heavy does not mean it will be sweet/ripe, in fact more often than not it will mean that the field was watered too late into the season and that watermelon probably didn't have time to convert the water into sugar. All fruits are considered ripe based on their percentage of sugar, the minimum a watermelon can have in CA is 8% but they aren't worth eating unless they have at least 11% in my opinion. With so many different varieties on the market you can't assume that every watermelon you see in the store will have the same harvest indicators. Hell, I was in a field a week ago and had a yellow flesh watermelon which looked more like a normal red flesh than most of the varieties that actually are red flesh! Best thing you can do is try to remember the variety names in the store, not many people realize it but if you pay more attention to that than the actual appearance then you will have much better luck. Also, google the variety that you are looking at while in the store(there should be a sticker on the fruit that tells you) and you can see what you should look like. If you see something bigger than normal remember that it needed more time to ripen so your best bet is to pick smaller ones with big ground spots.

Watermelons grow at a different rate, depending on where they are on the vine. BUT, they reap the WHOLE crop at once, usually, so you're going to have to search for a melon that has the right-colored field spot. Feeling for heft is good, as it does help determine the water content.

You can determine whether it’s fresh by the sound from knocking. Also, if the stem is green, the melon is definitely fresh.

First of all, love the way the video started! What a refreshing treat for a dog on a hot summer day. I've also heard that the webbing on the rest spot of the melon is another good indicator of ripeness.

Gloria 78 My dog is allergic to watermelon. Gets scabby sores days after consumption. Cucumbers too. Maybe all melon - like grown on vine fruits.

To summarize: 1. It should be dark green 2. heavy (from water weight) 3. stemless (was ripe so breaks from stem easily) 4. Have a darker sunspot (because it was left to ripen) 5. Fresh cut: avoid those with a pale colour or white streaks, dried out or mealy

Knocking is not "pointless". By knocking, you can feel if there is a hollow cavity in the very middle of the fruit. The bigger this cavity is, the riper and sweeter it tends to be. This is specially true for seed watermelons (wich are better), but applies to any kind of watermelons. Also, the sound of the knocking will be different for turgid and ripe fruits.
