INGREDIENTS for the Berta Jay's
PICKLED RED ONIONS
---------------------------------------------------------
1. CUT a red onion in half. I used one that had a 3¼ inch diameter.
2. Cut that half into very thin slices. Then, separate each slice of onion so you have many pieces.
3. Using a clean jar with a tight-fitting lid, PUT all the separated pieces. SET ASIDE.
4. Make the pickle mixture by putting into a bowl:
a. 1/3 cup ACV (apple cider vinegar - I use Bragg's)
b. 2 tablespoons date paste; here's the link:
• SO EASY DATE PASTE
c. 2 tablespoons water
d. 1 teaspoon dry sweetener (I used xylitol)
Here's the link to my sweetener video: • Natural White Sugar Re...
e. smidgen salt (I used Himalayan)
f. MIX WELL.
5. POUR this mixture over the set-aside sliced onions.
6. Leave in the refrigerator overnight. Be sure to turn the jar over-and-over a few times so the pickling juice touches all the sliced onions.
7. That's it! ENJOY!

Hello Berta! I’ve made these pickles without any of the sweetness and they are just fine! I am avoiding the extra sugars in my foods and I don’t notice the difference. Same way with beets.. As always, I enjoy your shows.

Hi Ms Berta! Pickled red onions are so good in salads! I've always made them by soaking the onion slices in boiling hot water for a couple of minutes before adding vinegar & different herbs & spices. They're ready within a couple of hours. Your method is different so used my last red onion to give it a try! It's in the refrig now so am looking forward to sampling the results tomorrow! Thanks for another video and for sharing another healthy recipe, Ms Berta! 😊

Thanks, I’m gonna try this. I usually ferment my onions in water and salt. Question do you make your own date paste?

Hi Berta! Looking forward to making this, can I use agave or honey? Also can I purchase date paste? I’ve never heard of that. Thank you 😃🧅
@bertajay
@bertajay Год назад
You probably could use either one, though I have never used those sweeteners in this recipe. Here's my date paste recipe. It is so easy. Not sure where you can buy date paste; anyway, here's the date paste recipe link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OcsYChjbi70.html

The red onions I can buy are really sharp, they always have me crying my eyes out 🤣 How long do these last?
@bertajay
@bertajay Год назад
I have had them last for about 2 weeks but I ate them on so many things...even stirred in my plain hummus...so good! Try soaking the sliced red onions in a bowl of water for 15-25 minutes and see if that helps. 😊

Hi Berta! I’ve always wanted to try this, but raw onions give me digestive problems. Perhaps slicing them thinly would make a difference. If not, I could chop them small and use them in cooking as usual. I’ll let you know! 💖🤠
@bertajay
@bertajay Год назад
Maggie, do cooked or steamed give you the same problem? 😊
@maggie2936-q1m
@maggie2936-q1m Год назад
@@bertajay no, seems I can tolerate them cooked, just not raw. If they do, I just don’t notice as much. Green onions don’t give me problems.

How long do they last in the fridge?
@bertajay
@bertajay Год назад
Please don't be upset with me, marylu but I honestly do not know. When I make these onions I eat few every day until they are gone. So my answer is that they last me, in the fridge, for about 7-9 days. 😒

in a clean masson jar you put your apple peels and apple cores ….you add water and sugar (30grammes for 1 liter of water ) you cover your jar with a piece of cloth and put the mixture in your pantry . every day or every 2 days you mix in order for the apples to be socked ..and avoid mold to develop ….you should have a bubbling mixture if not that means that you need to add some sugar for the fermentation to develop . after 10 days you will notice that appears a very subtil vinagar flavor … after 1 month your vinagar is ready you filter the mixture ,store it in a clean bottle …et voilà !!! you have made your first apple cider vinagar …. thinking that i buy it from stores my friends do not understand why i keep cleaning the house including the toilets using apple cider vinagar ..🤣😂 very important to know : if during the process mold appears on the surface of the mixture than you must throw it away.

@@dandana4647 Thanks so much, Dan. Sounds very labor intensive for me right now. I will attempt to give it a try one day, however. Thanks again. 👍🏾
