Hello guys right now i can do 0 pistol squat I will update this comment as i progress Good luck Update: day 3 I have mastered the chair pistol now iam doing the rail pistol its pretty hard and i carry most the weight by my hand but still there is a room for improvement Update: day 6 I did it i fucking did it My first pistol squat iam over the moon i still can't do more than one rep but i will keep training
@@walikhan9171 you could actually try to use a gymnastic ring in your hip level for more support while doing the pistol squat. Slowly, you can do it without the ring.
+pigmie Thanks man! Saw you just released a couple of pistol squat tuts as well, really like the progressions you had with the eccentric and concentric exercises. Fan of your tutorials!
@@TKDKoreanArt I don't want to take anything away from the kid for doing what he's doing... but he has absolutely trash stability and balance. It's an impressive feat, but it's a very poor example of "doing it correctly."
Pls I made it my goal to learn how to figure skate when quarantine is over so I’m just getting prepared and it’s harder then I though, I’m not flexible, skinny, nor strong so this is a pain I’m on the verge of giving up😭
You are shifting way too much weight on your heel. Try to balance the weight of body on the entire foot. Both heels and toes. If you have weak quadriceps, try performing normal squat for a while. Then attempt pistol squat. Also when going down in the pistol squat, keep the back straight and lean the torso forward.
thank you Thomas!!!! now I can do pistol squats!!! thank you so muchh!!! I remember when my teacher tell us to do this squats and I cant. Now I can show to my teacher that I can!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
When i was in jail I WITNESSED a 240lb grown man do single legs squats in front of me.. i was 150lbs at the time he told me he was the same exact size and build when he first got in he was only 8-9 months in at the time..To this day, just like 9/11.. i'll never forget it.
He ate tons and tons of potatoes along with lots and lots of sleep. He said within 4 months of that routine (trading everything on his tray for more potatoes, which isn't hard to do) he did that along with regular push ups, squats (as much as he could do each leg single) and heavy curls with heavy bench press. It still amazes me still that he pulled this off on demand whenever I asked him to.
dude you just made my day!! i'm a newly minted vegan and potatoes are my life! i knew they were awesome and pretty much a complete food but this puts it in another perspective; and doesn't it make you laugh now when you see peoples' pantries bursting with supplements!? all you need is some damn taters!
Mariusz Dziewulski if you are going to go heavy on potatoes make sure it’s sweet potato. All the other potatoes are high carbs & will just fatten you up!
Spandexius1 I appreciate the concern dude but I'm about to blow your mind, carbs do not make you fat, fat makes you fat. I know there's widespread carbophobia and even doctors recommend avoiding carbs but it's all nonsense, and starches are some of the best carbs around, but all are good, even table sugar. take a look at this from the one and only Dr John McDougall www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2009nl/feb/starch.htm
that one strand of hair tho......... lol just kidding, Merry Christmas Tapp Bros! Have a happy holidays with your family, look forward to learning more stuff from you in the year to come! :)
Oh my gosh, I'm so glad I looked this up! Today my 16yr old daughter made me do pistol squats in the gym with that machine that has the pully cord and the handle & I fell on my ass! I could not do that squat. I do a full squat all the time at work when I'm cleaning showers and lower cabinets, but this shit is hard! I'm going to try these progressions to ease into this thing so next time she makes me do them in the gym, I'm gonna rock that squat!
Is the pistol squat a work-out exercise, or it is just a show-off thing? I work out in the park and do 75 pistol squats on each leg (3x25 with 10 min pause in between) - I hold the rail with one hand to keep the balance. Today, some guy told me that I should stop it, because I am hurting my body. But I have been doing it once a week for more than a year and I never had any problems. What do you think?
I've been doing normal deep squats using an 8kg dumbell for 2 months (I do it every wednesday) I looked for another challenge, and I came up with this. I tried the chair method but I dont feel comfortable with it, so I tried the stair method yesterday (3 reps each side) The next day (today), my leg is surprisingly not that sore, so I tried the stair method but only with the fingers. I was able to do it, so I tried the free hand pistol squat without any assistance. I did it, I FREAKING DID IT. Form may be a little shaky, but I was able to do 3 proper pistol squads (2 on my left leg, and only 1 on my right leg since my leg finally got tired from yesterdays assisted pistol squad) :DD I couldnt do it anymore, got too tired xD I will continue training, and hopefully next year I can do it using dumbells 😁 Thank you so much for the video man! Cheers
Another is a raised heel pistol squat. This helps with developing the strength and balance when you may have mobility issues. Also, for stretching, you want to do a soleus stretch, a.k.a. bent leg calf stretch, since that is the muscle that will hinder your pistols as well.
Thanks for that - this is really helpful - was trying to do this squat for a while - but it looks like I didn’t have the flexibility - now I know how to work it out step by step! Subscribed 👍
This is really difficult, I can't go into full squat without spreading my foot outwards, if I try with one leg I just loose balance, also, I have a tendency to stay on the tip of my toes when squating with one leg, otherwise I lose balance and fall lol.
agauerm that means you have a weakness in your glutes. I had the same thing which lead to injuring my ankle and knee, my physio pointed out it was due to my foot spreading which is down to the glutes. I hope this helps :)
Each to their own I guess. When I performed my first pistol squat and one arm push up, I was pretty hyped ngl. But when I deadlifted 405lbs for the first time, god damn, I can't even describe the feeling. Perhaps if I ever manage to progress to much more advanced bodyweight movements (e.g. one arm pull ups or front levers) I'll feel a greater satisfaction.
check out Clarence Kennedy, he deadlifts 750lbs no belt and can do litterly al the bodyweight movements and beyond with only 100kgs of bodyweight. ur mind will be blown srsly lol
I can't do the first squat you showed on both feet without seriously arching my back forward so the outcome is when I'm all the way down, the top half of my back is almost horizontal instead of straight like yours. Any advice?
I just started Crossfit three weeks ago at the grand 'young' age of 50... so lots for me to learn. Your videos are excellent 'how to' tools...I'm off to the gym right now to practice my Pistol Squat progressions...many thanks! :-)
I been practising this passively last half year, and a few days ago a friend gave me the tip on how to lean kinda and all of a sudden it clicked and I was able to maintain balance all throughout. Still need to work a bit on my strength, can only do 1 rep as of now. So thanks for these exercises!
I have never tried a pistol squat in my life until today. My sports physio said I should do some to strengthen my glutes so I found your beginners guide really helpful. So I am starting at the beginning, sitting on a chair and moving off, but I can't wait to move to the assisted pistol squat and totally amaze my PT when she suggests I put pistol squats into my routine and I show her a perfect one! OMG that would be priceless! Thank you.
i was getting up from sitting on the floor and i did this by accident and my dad went crazy and was like "YOU JUST DID A PISTOL SQUAT" and thats why im watching this video
I look hideous!!! 🤣Okay. I hit plates on leg press machine & I can’t do even 1 strong and clean?!! I will challenge myself to do it gracefully 👍😅 by next week!!!
I was NEVER able to do full squats. Only 90° squats💀anything below that hurts 💀😂 I’ve never been flexible ever so I guess I need to learn how to b flexible first
My english is not good so... Una cosa que deberían decir es sobre el ángulo para colocar el pie, es decir si es a 7 u 8 grados o más, veo en el video que colocaste el pie a unos 8º o más de abertura para hacer el pistol squat y nadie menciona esto. Thanks for show us the progressions.
Amazing walkthrough. I started w/ assisted balance leg dip off the bottom step to off a bat tub side now the banister getting there. I had flexibility diwn but lacked balance. If you could go back & do a progressive walkthrough for balance, since it all depends on that. I practiced the tandem stance regularly rhen progress to single foot.
Dude, your pistol sucks, your knee is collapsing inwards (3:49) due your lack of mobility, pay attetion to that or you ACL will get fucked. Despite of that, the progression method is good, thanks
I have major chicken legs and I can pistol squat on both my legs for 6 reps. I dunno where I get the power from cause well I have small legs but maybe it is linked to my decent vertical jump and balance from skateboarding?? Idk
I have the hip mobility no problem and can do a full pistol squat, but I can’t keep my non-standing leg straight. When I come up from the loaded pistol position of the squat, the quad of the off-leg feels like will rip in half or is super tight, so I have to twist the leg a bit inside to offset that and keep my balance. The active standing legs have no issue moving up and down strength and mobility wise. Why is that the quads are strong enough to push out of a deep squat when they’re the standing leg, but can’t handle the pressure of being the balancing leg? It makes my pistol form look sloppy
This exercise is so fucking great. You can literally do it anywhere. Which means, it takes the least effort to start relative to sitting in front of a computer.
I can't fully extend my leg when doing a pistol squat. my leg starts to shake the further I extend. even against the wall single leg can't push up my body. any advice on correcting this?
Can you, or even should you, attempt to learn this if you've had surgery for an inguinal hernia? Will this much stress raise the risk getting another such hernia?? Thanks.
I dont have a problem with going down and thn coming up.. but once I am completely up I lose balance.. my body moves to the right.. I have to hold something for 2-3 seconds and then go for next rep..
I am a 19 year old girl who has never been to a gym or have done any work out this is the first time I heard of this any i completed 5 pistol squats with ease 🙃🙃
Everyone talks about ankle mobility. But they gloss over the fact that you need to be able to be in full hip flexion with a straight leg. If you can’t touch your toes with straight leg, you can’t get into the bottom position of a pistol squat.
this is really hard huhu, but ill work to do it right, my lower half are just soo weak to the point my knee's trembling when i do squat and lunges..... i can't even straighten my legs....... this is gonna be hard, but i'll take the challenge hehe
Great if you can manage but the difficulty may result in many just giving up. Single leg half squats while using one chair either side for balance will give you an amazing burn, as will standing on one leg with it slightly bent. The added strength then may help you progress to the pistol squats later. I admire those he can do these but there not easy
