If you're serious about getting better at playing the piano in 2023, this is the perfect practice plan for you.
Start by writing your long term goals. 10 years, 5 years and 1 year.
Then you'll be breaking the year up into 3 month sections, and you'll focus on 3-4 different topics during each 3 month period.
Each month, figure out what it is you specifically need to do in order to hit your 3 month target.
You can then break this monthly plan into a weekly plan and even a daily plan.
If you follow this process, you can be 100% certain that you are using your practice time as efficiently as possible.

Drummer, not pianist, but all the same: 1) learn how to break down songs into blocks, and remember blocks instead of singular notes 2) visual language, so I can communicate better with my band mates 3) smoothing out my transitions from verse to chorus to bridge etc 4) learning how to maintain finesse for phrases that emphasize the 2nd and 4th sixteenth notes

I'd love to be creating 5-7 minute tracks by the end of the year. I'm terrible when it comes to arrangement and very frequently get caught writing the same boring intro - chorus - outro arrangement. It's time to step out of that bubble! I also need to work on creating a cleaner mix in general - better separation and width would be amazing.. My most detrimental weakness is not believing in myself, but at the same time being too much of a damn perfectionist to the point where I rarely end up going through with my ideas! I have hundreds of unfinished projects.. yeah.. It's a problem. It's time to loosen up a little, create some music, release it, and ultimately have fun! My 3 goals for the next 3 months are: - Recognizing chord names through visual playing. - Incorporating key changes into my playing. - Developing relative pitch for single notes in major scales.

March/April/May Scales: Fluid, increase accuracy & speed. Chords: learn major & minor chords, practice them daily until they are on automatic. Go back to two of my songs-refresh, practice, polish, memorize. (The Rose/Open Arms) Thank you Piano Pig

Thanks Simon, I know what I'll be practicing this month or at least this week. This really nice pentatonic lick, I'll try transposing it to different scales too. Thanks for reminding me to stay humble and on planet earth. Trying to much at once just doesn't work very well. I'm definitely a victim of trying to much, and as a result I forget or don't really learn certain things. I'm making my list for this month.

Just discovered your videos - love your teaching method and nice easy pace of delivery….I am a life long drummer (49 years old) but a beginner at piano. I’ve always wanted to learn piano and music theory not only to learn a 2nd instrument but also to become a more well rounded musician, including becoming a better singer for harmonizing. I just signed up for your course and am looking forward to learning!!! Topics for the 1st three months are - 1) Learn and memorize Major/Minor scales (2) learn/memorize major/minor chords with Inversions (3) Learn/memorize standard chord progressions (keys tbd)

For the next several months, I would continue to do the piano tutorials on youtube daily. I would also one day to start a career of becoming a pianist or even to become a musician to be able to teach people to play many different instruments.

Thank you Simon! I bought my keyboard a year ago on Christmas and I have no background in music. I am teaching myself using videos from RU-vid and so far I can play Fur Elise, Chopin OPs 9 No 1 and I am in my 50s so I am taking it slow. This year I would like to: 1) Able to do sight reading and play in C major, G major, F major, A minor, D major 2) Able to identify middle C note with my ear 3) Learn to play one classical piece well Keep my fingers crossed!

I like this mindset of setting goals and it's something I've been doing myself with my piano journey, perhaps not so specifically like you explained in this video. Something that's been hard for me is dealing with learning new stuff AND not forgetting about the rest. How do you implement things that you've already learnt and to your goals?
@Piano_Pig
@Piano_Pig Год назад
I like to build on the stuff I already know, rather than constantly learn new random information. And if you've learnt something, then move on and forget the thing you originally learnt, you probably didn't spend enough time practicing it.

Have a goal . Practice what you are weak at maybe left hand . practice scales in thirds and 4ths.A tune a day with nice chords a nice Solos
@Piano_Pig
@Piano_Pig Год назад
Practicing what you are weak is the best thing you can do! Most people just practice what they're good at - which is useless!

I was wondering if there's anything you would suggest budding pianists should prioritize. I've been at it for a month (got my keyboard at Christmas) and I've been focused on different things, but my personal priorities are music theory and ear training, along with technique. Right now I'm on natural minor (I have major memorized) and I plan on learning the other scales, but I also am trying to familiarize myself with chords and intervals.

So basically, I've been playing piano on & off all my life with very little training, I want to get better at writing b sections for my own piano pieces, I tend to get stuck in chord progressions and want to learn how to play more freely and not in a box.. The first thing I thought would be to really take a step back and learn all scales (I only semi know major & minor atm) but practice just the scales, their fingerings, practice playing what I usually do but in all keys.. Also stick to practicing easy songs and stay on easy songs for a long time, I say this part because with past piano teachers I would easily knock out the easy tunes and then choose a more difficult piece but realizing all this time now, that killed my hand eye coordination and basically becoming a better reader... So again, the first scoop of things to learn are all scales, modes? and chord inversions? Is there anything you would add or change here? Thanks & enjoy your videos

1. Practice articulation 2. Learn 5 scales 3. Practice changing power chords with left hand while practicing a melody on the right hand. 4. Try to play without looking at the keys 😅
@Piano_Pig
@Piano_Pig Год назад
What scales? Playing without looking at the keys will come naturally, you can't force it and I wouldn't try to practice this to be honest, you can spend your time doing far more useful things!

ive been spending time on ear training, but i feel like im flailing around. im able to identify intervals okay, but its harder identifying intervals in actual music im listening to or identifying the key of a song.. when it comes to hearing intervals is there a recommended path? i feel like there are so many different contexts to hear intervals--the distance between notes, the pure sound of the interval, relative to some reference notes, part of a melody, muscle memory, giving the interval a certain feel or labels s.a. 'wanting to resolve', 'strong', 'open', 'crowded', etc. i hear singing and solfege recommended a lot, but im reluctant to jump into a whole new thing though. Any advice?
@Piano_Pig
@Piano_Pig Год назад
Using apps to identify intervals is very useful, but it's even better when you're using your ears to hear things in context. Practice listening to tunes you like and figure out the chords and what the bass is doing. This will be way more useful!

Goal one learn the all chord progressions in C. Two learn 1 song per month
@Piano_Pig

Learn all the chord progressions in C? That doesn't sound like a very good goal to be honest. There are are infinite number of progressions. You'd be better off learning ONE progression you really like in all 12 keys.
