My son is an Arborist and he lives in FL . I live in Ga. too . He gave me 2 dogwood trees to plant in my yard . The instructions say not to add any compost or any kind of potting soil . I asked my son about that and he told me it's because the tree is trying to adapt to the dirt that you put it in . It says to make sure that you remove the grass about 3 feet around where you are planting the trees . Then put mulch around the tree so it can hold the water and keep the tree moistened . My trees are not that big as yours are . I started digging my holes today and of course about the time I got the holes dug and the grass removed ... it started raining . The rain might be a good thing . Plus I was letting the roots soak in some water like the instructions says to do . You're right about the Ga. red clay . I have some potting soil and some ash . I might add a little potting soil , but not the ash . It will burn up the roots . I have had that happen to another plant I planted before . So I will try to be careful when it comes to the ash . I hope your trees are doing well . Thanks for sharing your video . P.S. I was thinking about using the stakes and the strings too . I don't want it to fall over . 😉🙂

I've always loved the look of dogwood trees and have been fantasizing about planting one in our yard, but had no idea where to start. My biggest fear was spending the time & money on something that would just ultimately die. Your video was very informative and breaks the process down into easy-to-follow steps that make this seem achievable. Thank you!

I use a tiller to dig my hole so that breaks up the dirt for when I refilled the hole

We have a lot of clay here in Indiana also and it is hard digging. But we moved to Michigan for a few years where I had to replace a mailbox post. I couldn't believe how loose the soil was. It was like digging in sand. I dug my post hole in about ten minutes,

From what I could tell, you did a great job. I’m afraid the wind distorted much of your sound.

My dogwood which was planted last spring had pretty flowers this year, but the new leaves are starting to brown and wilt, not sure if I need to fertilize or add more or less water. I too live in GA and my tree has no shade, so I'm worried about it. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Without seeing it I can't tell you for sure but you may have leaf scorch. This happens when a dogwood gets too much sun for an extended period of time. They like to have some shade. I try to plant them where they get full morning sun but are somewhat shaded during the afternoon. They don't require full shade but if their location gets too much you may need to move it. Try giving it more water than usual. Thanks for tuning in. Lisa

Happened to my red dogwood where it was getting full sun, I had to transport it to where it gets partial shade in afternoon. Hope the tree will be ok since by the time I did the move, all the leaves wilted away and it was just bare tree and branches, although I do see some green branches still at this time in Fall. Seems the dogwood trees are sensitive to too much direct sun.

I planted my first dogwood in mid October last year. Should expect any blooms from it this year? What should I be looking for to make sure it is still living?

Dogwoods are a fairly slow growing tree. It could take 3 plus years to get the first blooms. Don't worry if it doesn't bloom for the first few years and it could possibly only grow up to a foot a year. If your tree is small to start you can add a small amount of fertilizer to the base when planting. I would use a nitrogen enriched fertilizer. Maybe look for a 16 in nitrogen. There is a 16-4-8 if you can find it but just use a small amount. You could also use fish fertilizer, which is a great source of nitrogen, around the base once it's planted. I would use 1 tablespoon fish fertilizer added to 1 gallon water. You can use that spring and fall to help growth and bloom. It will need a well draining spot and can handle a semi shaded area. Hope this helps and thanks for planting a dogwood.

Yes I Did Planted The Dogwood Tree In A Semi Shade Area. Very Interesting 2 Use Fish Fertilizer. Will Keep That In Mine. At The Time I Used A TableSpoon Of Coffee Ground. This Summer Is Will Be A Hot One. Will Keep The Tree Well Water. Thank You Your Time. Steve

I wonder how well they would do in Canada Ottawa the capital???

There are dogwoods that can be grown in very cold climates. Usually what you see in the landscape stores in your area are the ones that thrive in the cold. We're in a very hot climate. I would google search dogwoods for colder climates. You would plant it the same as I did in the video. They like rich soil that's why I add ash. Thank you for stopping by. Lisa

I live in South Texas and I wonder would a Dogwood tree do well in my area and if not, what are some similar trees that might do well in my area?
@LisasWorld100
@LisasWorld100 7 лет назад
I really think it would be too hot for dogwoods there especially if you don't have much shade. They need a lot of shade. The area we planted these in get about 5 hours sun but no more. If you have an area like that you should be okay just don't plant them when the season is really hot. You should be able to check in with your extension office to see what trees, plants and bushes do best for your area. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Lisa

This is my problem. We don’t have any shade right now either.

The last thing you want to do is amend the soil like you did. It creates a basin effect where the roots just circle around the amended rich soil. It's proven it's best to backfill with native soil, and if the soil is that bad then the tree shouldn't be planted there.

I'm in GA and our soil is the pits. We have to amend the soil or we can't plant. I wish it were different but not all soil is the same.

Do dogwoods have to have shade in the afternoon?
@LisasWorld100
@LisasWorld100 8 лет назад
Blake, It's best to plant them when it's not so hot out. It was spring when we planted these. If you plant them in the spring they will be able to get acclimated and seated in before the heat of summer. They'll be fine without shade. Hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in.
