Hope you found this helpful. As you can see planting plants in the pond is not much different than planting something in you garden. Just be sure to use potting soil made for ponds as it is heavier and will not float away. You can pick some up below, along with the fertilizer.

Just use gravel and if anything you can add root tabs when and if your plant looks like it need a boost if you use dirt never put the dirt right in the water in less you cap it with rocks /gravel ...The water already had tons of nutrients why the water green and you have green algae ..you need some flowing plants that will help take some of the nutrients out

Soil is not needed. Aquatic plants just need anchored, and pea gravel is perfect. Over time, the fish and plant matter will create a natural "compost" that the plant will root into. Add fertilizer tablets to help get them established.

Great idea to plant straight into the pond ... I must try it in my pond. Nice waterfall!

I've used just plain florida ground sand after cleaning it with fine success. But I've found even better plain gravel no pot plants do far better right in the waterfall where the nutrients fly by

Great info,you didn’t show your entire pond not sure why 🤷🏽‍♂️, also your spillway waterfall could look much fuller and sound much better by setting a few cobbles to redirect water flow. Overall great stuff! Keep them coming. Sorry for the criticism I’m no professional lol

This is 100% the wrong info. You never put fertiliser in a pond. You shouldn't really put soil in your pond and that may contain fertiliser. Use sand if you have too.
@mikkosrussos

Was thinking about using sand instead of soil for direct planting- so the roots are taking nutrients from the water rather than the soil/ compost
@BackyardWaterGarden
@BackyardWaterGarden 4 года назад
Sounds like a great idea. Not sure how to keep the sand together. Curious how that will work. Let me know.

@@BackyardWaterGarden I have planned plants in gravel without any soil directly in pond (without basket). Everything is ok, it is second year and plants grow again.

I've done sand and no soil just gravel. The sand in fabric pots live fine but get root bound and are 1/2 the size of free unpotted plants in gravel to stabilize them

You potted the Canna lilies in a pot that'll easily allow soil to leach out and dirty the pond?
@BackyardWaterGarden

The soil used was specifically for planting pond plants in water. After the initial submersion no more dirt came out.

@@BackyardWaterGarden I used clay pots and just put about 2" of gravel on the top to keep soil from leaching out and muddying the water. Also put some dead leaves in the soil for food as an experiment.

I have a mixture of comet and shebunkin goldfish. They will grow to about 6 inches. I also have koi that will never stop growing their whole lifespan. Although their growth will slow as they age, they never stop growing completely. The largest are 4 years old and about 12 inches long.

My pond goldfish eat everything. They literally don't have a stomachs. Even in 3k gal of water they eat all my plants. Hornwort to duckweed to you name it. I've tried 3x day feeding but doesnt matter google search says they start pooping undigested food with too much but that doesn't stop them. I think it's learned behavior, my friends goldfish get fed 1x every 3 days and won't eat plants and are terrified of people. I swim with my fish and they nibble on me. So hey it's a totally different thing

Introducing fertilizer for your plants would also be fertilizing the algae correct? Shouldn't the fish waste be the fertilizer naturally
@barriewalker9160

You don't want to remove all the dirt. When you place your plants in your pond the water will get murky. This will go away once everything settles.

I mean.... I really don't see why you need to leave soil in... I'm only on my second year and am only using. 40 gallon patio pond but I have been growing aquarium plants in straight inert gravel for 5 years and I feel like with all the leaf debris and bird poop that gets into an outside pond soil isn't needed really for pond plants.

The potting soil in the video is especially made to go in ponds. It stays together better when submerged and it does not contain the fertilizers that could be harmful to fish and other pond life.

@waldroc942

Your backyard should be described as a back garden. Builders have yards, full of bags of cement and bricks. Truckers have yards full of trucks. Flowers, ponds and lawns live in gardens... not yards. Your back garden is a garden... not a yard. Why do you people talk about yards instead of gardens? FIFK?
