In this video we'll show you how to plaster a ceiling for beginners. There's a lot to learn here so get comfortable because we're going to walk you through the whole process.
From preparation to application, we'll show you everything. The biggest problem with plastering ceilings is this little thing called gravity! It doesn't help when you're trying to stick a sloppy substance to a something up high.
But luckily this guide can help. I'll show you how to get bumpy ceilings flat, the exact tools and materials you'll need for the job and some essential tips you NEED to know before you plaster a ceiling of your own.
So if you're looking to learn plastering then this tutorial is a perfect start for you. If you like this video please like and subscribe. And also feel free to leave a comment...I'd love to hear from you.

I’ve watched your tutorials on and off for a year now and I’ve plastered several rooms here, my first was our grand salon - 5 meters by 12 room and four meter high walls - Jesus I was absolutely done in after that. You gave me courage (Im a woman so I was nervous even more of giving it a go - not being sexist just the truth). Here in France, tradespeople are ridiculously expensive so I gave it a go - couldn’t of done it without you. Thanks Blane, Leanne

Today I have finish my first ever plastering, and it was exactly like on your video artex ceiling, didn’t do any plastering before and started from the ceiling…I did exactly like on your video first bonding coat and then after few days two coats of plaster multi finish , the most trouble caused drying plaster , as a novice of course it was hard to do whole coat in 1 go so on the end was a bit dry , ceiling had about 10m2 . Your videos are very helpful, it is everything beginner plasterer should know , now we need to just practice practice practice and learn from experience, thank You for your help

Hi Blane. Love the videos. Did you apply the bonding coat with one mix then flatten and then the 2nd mix and flatten or all in one mix? and did you PVA over the bonding coat or wet it down to slow down the suction on the first skimcoat? I particularly like the tip about working towards the centre light. Many thanks Paul

You can't do it accurately. Every mix is different & you have to wait until it's right. You will learn to get an eye for it quite quickly by trial & error. If you're making it look a mess, it's not ready so give it a bit longer. When it starts to look better with troweling you are at the right time.

Hi Blaine, I’ve been plastering for a few years but admittedly ceilings past a certain size I struggle with. Although it comes good in the end, I’m certainly not very efficient and sweat (near panic) more than other spreads do so this video has been great. I have a question though: 99% of the time i overboard ceilings due to how often blistering and failure of the skim coat has occurred on my jobs. I’ve never heard of using bonding in this way. Does it help keep blistering/de-lamination at bay? Have you any advice or techniques? It’d be great to not have to hoist plasterboard up all the blinking time.

Hello! Great video, I’m very new to plastering and am trying to go for a plaster ceiling in a school bus conversion. I know everyone says that plaster is extremely durable, I was wondering if you being someone who knows the product very well, think a plaster ceiling would hold up when driving down bumpy roads or you think it would probably just crack. Any thoughts you have would be appreciated!

I get a good result with just two coats of malty finish. If there is a risk of distemper. I just re-board it. You can get sealers but they take a day to dry and cost more than boards as well as smell of chemicals. Year's ago I made a plastic finishing trowel. But now you can buy them. I think they're brilliant. A good finishing trowel can get you out of trouble as well.

Stangely my local Selco don't sell the speedskim although they sell many other OX products. One note on artex I have found is tht sometimes the artexing has small stalagmites hanging off the ceiling, especiall on the deeper patterns, so i sometimes have so spend a 1/2 an hour using an old trowel to cut of the longer bits. Keep up your videos - they are a godsend to anyone doing their own work - committed DIYes or younger guys going into the trade.

Hi Blaine first of all I love your videos I've learnt so much from you keep up the good work. I wanted to ask, when plastering a ceiling but not the walls should I not be worried about cracks around the edge where wall meets ceiling? Also on kinda the same subject is it possible to plaster half of a wall and feather it in to an existing plastered wall for instance where you have extended a property? Thanks in advance 👍
@PlasteringForBeginners

You can Caulk the edges after which should stop any cracks from showing through. And you can feather a wall into an existing one - it's possible but you just have to use lots of water to make it work. Hope this helps my friend and good luck 👍

Can ceiling paper be plastered over, or does it have to be stripped off. Also, is the PVA still sticky when putting your first coat on. Thanks for your videos.

@PlasteringForBeginners 2 года назад
Never plaster onto paper pal! It all needs to be stripped back before plastering - I know it's a pain but it needs doing! It doesn't matter. If you're new I'd just wait until the PVA is completely dry to avoid complications 👍

I all ways PVA artex when bonding but I never PVA bonding when it's still green just put nice skim coat over the bonding and its a treat, does it not bleb when you PVA the bonding coat Matt
@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 2 года назад
I always used to do that but the last few times I've done it the plaster didn't adhere to the Bonding so I always PVA it now. Never with Hardwall but always with Bonding. It works a treat to be fair...gives it a nice key for the skim 👍

I would really like to get to the bottom this one . As far as I understand it there is no need to use PVA as long as you go over the bonding with multi the same day. It's why we don't PVA between coats of multi . The gypsom forms crystals in the water between the layers. Am I missing something here ? Thanks for a great video.

You're correct I've been plastering over many artex ceilings for over 30 years and you go over the bonding skim mixture When it starts to pick up Or you could say after a good half hour after you put the speed skim over it Then like you say you don't need to pva it The multi finish should bond perfectly to it In rare cases where you leave the bonding dry for 24 hours then maybe you would need to pva But apart from that you don't need to pva the bonding first coat

What do you do if the ceiling is bowing in the middle? Do you have to rip the whole thing down and start again?

Is it at all possible to just do two coats of finished plaster on this textured ceiling rather than using the bonding coat? Just a thought

Can you use the same process on a ceiling that has cracks in or is it better to lower the ceiling with plasterboard?

What is the difference between undercoat plaster and bonding? both made by gypsum

I believe the bonding seals the surface to prevent all the moisture from getting sucked out of your plaster by the drywall and gives the basecoat of plaster something it can stick to. Lookup plasterweld.

How long do you have to wait until you use multi finish once you have done the first coat with the bonding?
@PlasteringForBeginners

Roughly 45 mins to an hour. Just depends on the background you're working on pal 😉
