Thank you! This really keeps me improvising even more on the piano! Have a question. What chord would you add after bassnote F and right hand a, e flat and a flat (octave+)? my opinion would be a minor 9 however it seems like you are explaining more complicated chords which is what I personally do like.

Hello: I think your lesson is genius. In time 1:20 of the video you play the progression. Do you have a music sheet with the chords listed; it would help me to study. Thank you, R

What is the reason for the accidentals? I'm a beginner and for example I'm confused as to why when you say E is a 3, you don't play a traditional E minor triad/seventh???

Extensions beyond the 7th can bring different notes.

Naiwen Wang could you elaborate a little more? I have the same question and am also a beginner. Why exactly do the extensions beyond a 7th bring those accidentals?
@HungryForWater
@HungryForWater 5 лет назад
Woody They are called altered extensions. For example, there are 7 notes in a scale, if you made a Cmaj7 chord. You would be adding on the 7th scale degree which is B is it’s a C major chord. Now you can extend it even further to 9th, 11th, and 13th. All you do is keep counting up. Technically the scale resets once you go to the 7th degree and go back to C, but in regards to building chords, you can keep going by adding the D, which is a Cmaj9, D being the 9th, it could also be thought is as the 2 because it is the second scale degree. Same goes if you add the 11th, which would be F in the C major scale. It could be thought also as the 4th. Now, once you extend chords like that you are able to FLAT or SHARPEN those extended notes, it’s commonly used in jazz and gospel and soul as passing tones or chord substitutes. All this required a deep deep deep level of understand on voicing and harmony and intervals, but since you are a beginner for now, stick to learning scales and diatonic chords, it will help a lot in the long run.

Normally 4 half steps in a row would never happen, and no scale would support it. The scale would have to be theoretical, using double and triple flats/sharps. A beginner progression to play around with to get a neat but simple descending bass line would be G-D/F#-F-Em. Playing it without the F# is common, but it adds a lot of flavor. You get to trick the listener by making them think that you are playing in G major, but halfway through it they will hear that its the C major scale (G Mixolydian). Another way to do it, and alot more common, would be by playing GMaj7 second . Following it with G7, which contains B°, will get the same effect though i perfer to end it with C/E instead (home sweet home by Mötley Crüe uses this progression, starting on A). Dont worry so much about what you are told works, and focus on how to make things work, theory doesnt tell you how to play, but instead why you can.

Im confused. How do these cords relate to the numbers. For example If the B is 7 Why is the left hand chord not a B chord? Same for all these chords being played.

actually, he's playing rootless voicings. you leave off the B and instead in the left hand play just the 3rd and the 7th, then you can play all of the altered extensions in your right hand. you're assuming the bass player will be playing the root. you'll see occasionally he'll drop his left hand down further to play the root quickly.

What is the name of the chord at 2:26?

Along with the low D in the left hand still ringing from a moment before, this 2 (II) dominant chord is commonly referred to as D13#11.
