Love this channel! Great video! Brought back memories, I used to own an supergun and a copy of Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting back in the day. I also had an Neo-Geo (cool SNK shirt, I remember the dog ad in EGM all those years ago lol) But unfortunately as we all tend to do growing up I sold it and really regret it. I play everything on mame now, but you're absolutely right about emulation. As someone who was a HUGE Neo-Geo fan, the Neo-Geo sound chip and music was legendary, but there's just something about that original hardware and sound that emulators just don't get right.when you're blasting through Metal Slug or classic KoF and Samurai Shodown music tracks. I've started to watch your channel and find it great as I'm going to get back into collecting. Loved the PC-Engine episode :) Thanks for the videos dude.

Great video mate as always. Indeed emulation is almost perfect nowadays but I'm a person who is really sensitive to input lag. I can tell a difference from the SSF2X Grand Master Challenge board I own when compared to a perfect MAME setup for example. Loved the video, saw it on my lunch break. Keep these coming. PS: That Ghosts 'n Goblins is worth some serious money nowadays, treasure it!

You never want to directly interface high impedance arcade video signals with low impedance (75Ω) consumer-grade equipment. Putting 3 trim-pots on the video outputs isn't how you properly shape TTL +5V logic analog video into a .7vPP low impedance termination. There should be a buffer in the video transmission lines between the arcade output and the TV/Scaler input that DC restores and attenuates the video, properly. Also, it doesn't appear that composite sync is being properly shaped, either. You're quite possibly jamming a +5v sync signal into equipment (Framemeister, TV, etc.) that has a power rating limit of 1.8V. Another good way to seep into ESD protection diodes of a piece expensive equipment for it to ultimately fail.
@pyrexsteel
@pyrexsteel 6 лет назад
Voultar just curiosity but is this something that could possibly be fixed through a custom cable or a mod? Or would a whole new supergun be required? I've had one of these for a while now and have been using it with an MVS board on a Sony PVM but have recently acquired a framemeister. While searching to see if it was fine to use it with a framemeister I found this video and comment.

I bought one of these Superguns and I'm worried about blowing my OSSC. I've been doing some research and there are two options to make it safer. I plan on using #2, since the OSSC supports this. 1) Add 470 ohm resistor to pin 20 on SCART cable to properly attenuate CSYNC to a lower voltage or 2) Use AV3 input along with a custom SCART - VGA cable with 3.5mm audio, AV3 accepts TTL level voltage on CSYNC SCART (F) VGA (M) R pin 15 pin 1 G pin 11 pin 2 B pin 7 pin 3 S pin 20 pin 13 connect grounds on both

You need to regulate the flow of electricity to be the desired input for what ever device is receiving. So use some resistors? Those will limit the electrical flow, but I'm not sure how it will affect the data transmission to the frame mister. Don't have one to test either. This is a difficult and complicated issue to solve without having the hardware.

I seem to remember seeing a video about an FPGA board that can run most arcade hardware setups natively without emulation. The beauty to this arrangement is that you can upload any hardware (and its accompanying ROMs) you want instead of having to use the actual motherboard for each game (which could get REALLY expensive, really quick!) Game play is perfect, too, since there is no emulation going on.

Thank you for this very informative video. It’s been my dream to own a real pac man machine... I’ll likely never be able to have an actual cabinet, but to game on an original board might be the next best thing and it’s surprisingly affordable! I could see myself picking up PCBS of a few “classics” for that extra authenticity in the home. Are there any recommendations for a good joystick? I doubt most of the games I’d be interested in would need more than 1 or 2 buttons but I suppose it would be nice to have something that does it all.

I agree that original hw is best. But with advancements for most people emulation is the way to go. The cost of og hw is just too great to not consider the option. Even if getting the base model supergun the pcbs can be very costly. Especially those that are sought after. They weren't made in the quantities that home ports were so rarity is almost a given on any pcb you may find. Add to the problem that most arcade owners (the ones that had the machines originally back in the 90s) weren't many times careful with the storage and handling making many pcbs damaged or corroded. One board might fire up the first time but might die the third because it was just the extra time it needed to fail due to hidden corrosion. And you might be out of the $1000+ Donkey Kong board. So those wanting to get into collecting might keep this in mind if you have a tight budget to begin with. Nice explanation on the Superguns though :)
@adamsfusion
@adamsfusion 6 лет назад
I'd like to echo this idea as well. I don't do the game collecting, but I collect seriously old rare computers (old IBMs, PDPs, Commodore and Atari goodies, etc.) and if someone were to ask me how to play, say, Commander Keen, I'd tell them to spin up DosBox and have a blast. Collecting original antique devices of any sort is something you really have to yearn for and put the love into. It's a hobby that requires constant upkeep and a good bit of knowledge of software and hardware to understand all the little issues that can come up in these things. And when it works, it's a blast of charm and nostalgia that makes it feel so much better. But when it fails, and it will fail, it feels like an expensive doorstop and waste of time.

I've built my own arcade cabinet from scratch (video on my channel). I had an old computer around and based it from that. I autoboot into BigBox with a little program I wrote :). Emulation for me was the best option as I can play any system I want.

This is very cool stuff, I didn't even know this kind of hardware even existed for an arcade pcb. I see getting started is within reason but after that it's a whole new ball game. Average arcade pcb is $100+ (working boards) the more popular arcade pcb games are $200+ The Neo Geo are going up in price for them carts, unless you buy knock offs. But still it's a very cool alternative instead of buying a arcade cab 👍

Also, I think CPS2 games come in 2 parts, right? one pcb containing the game rom, and another that contains everything else and houses the first pcb? Are there any other systems that are in 2 parts like this, apart from MVS and CPS2? (and the old DECO cassette thing. but I don't think the majority of arcade enthusiasts will be getting those)

Been studying electric circuits with semiconductors in them for a while now and then looking at that giant circuit board being larger than the average desktop pc motherboard. Interesting how technology have evolved over the years as this motherboard size while being big in the old times, I believe with some work it is possible to design a much smaller tablet or even phone sized device that performs all the functions of this device and then it will work. But those games that are made to be coin operated while being fun to play, they don't have a story mode or anything due to the fact at that time, the companies rely on quarters to make money as you deposit a quarter, you rent the ability to play and they make the game get progressively harder so either you get good or it will cost you a lot of quarters to reach the higher levels and even then at the end there might not even be a final boss, you might just get a high score if you are good or lucky.

A large problem with video capture of any non standard NTSC signal is the frame rate. Many Arcade machines don't cycle at 59.94 FPS and capture cards basically need the timing to be correct or you will get no signal, or one that cuts in and out. How are you handling capturing with just the OSSC which is just a line doubler, and not a frame synchronizer? Does Elgato HD60 frame synchronize material that isn't perfect 59.94/60.0?

Is there a way though to connect the monitor of the arcade machine to the computer for streaming?

What about games like the mortal kombat series, that utilise aux wiring, out of jamma standerd. Would that work with these superguns? I actually have a umk3 arcade cabinet and own all the pcb's in the series, but this is still interesting...
