Such a helpful video! I've tried to play with my 6 year old daughter, but she thought the quest was too scary and instead decided to have a dance party with all the minis. When she heard the king talking about a magic treasure guarded by a monster, she said "No, I didn't hear that, and I go back to the party". A case of an incredibly reluctant hero, but she had fun with that for nearly two hours. Really great idea to use pets and shopping, and also I'm getting an idea for her to save a magical creature.

I played with my 4 and 6 year old nephews in a pared down version, it was legit the cutest. Ex. 1: When battling the BB, I asked the 4 year old if he wanted to fight or talk it out--he said talk. So I asked what he would say to get the BB to stop. Nephew says, "PPWWWWEEEASE?" I mean, how could you not, right? :) Ex 2: Same 4 year old was in the midst of saving a birthday party from being overtaken by giant insects. When asked which one he wanted to hit, he replies, "I hit the pider{sic} right in the pooper." Every single adult died laughing, lol. D&D with kids is fun :D

Hey, just so you guys know, the Blue Yeti mic is a front-facing microphone. Even if you have it set to omnidirectional mode, you’d want it standing straight up, not tilted and pointing towards you like in this video. Since you are both sitting on the same side of the table, you’d get the best use by setting it to Cardioid mode and setting the mic standing straight up. That way you’d have richer audio and reduce picking up echoes in the room.

Lol, yeah we learned that later. It only took a year of making these videos to realize that.

I am an education major and I often work with kids at the local care center. This has helped me develop a fun outdoor roleplaying game (similar to LARP) for the kindergarten class. As a dungeon master and a teacher, I thank you for your contribution.

@@jaedarling2510 You can order large plush dice online. In my case, I bought a big D20 for them to roll together. After each roll we’d have a pop quiz about our lesson of the day to determined who’d get to add their proficiency to the roll first. Students who had already gone but still got a correct answer got to provide a plus 1 to another student’s roll. Since they were all kindergarteners, the rules had to be simple. I wrote a branching story based on the standard brother’s grim fairy tales that could be influenced by their rolls. (Spoiler alert! They always won.)

Glad you mentioned pets! Any time I’ve played with or heard other stories of playing with kids, the love engaging with animals and playing as animal-based characters. I hadn’t considered how much the visual aids will really help. Kids have better imaginations, but pictures will definitely help them stay focused. Great video, Mark and Gonzo!

Bob World Builder thank you so much. Yes, kids have great imaginations but I think the younger they are the less likely they are to be able to understand some of the special relations between objects and what something so unusual as a beholder looks like.

My 7 year old daughter is playing her first character, Lucy the Archer (ranger class). Her favorite moment in our game so far has been when she successfully bonded with a wolf that is now her companion. She was so delighted when at the end of that session she went up to level 3 and learned a new spell. “Can I talk with animals now!?” Yes, you can. PURE. GOLD.

I have 8 kids (6 littles still in the house) and this was the best. The hardest thing was when my 4 year old saw how much fun it was and had to get in one the action, so now he helps me with NPC and DING, which is perfect for a kid that can't keep up with the rest of the group.

Hey guys! This is a great video. I've been playing a game with my grandkids for about 3 or 4 months now and like you said, they are game on and locked in. My youngest granddaughter, who is 8, asks me every time I see her, "Have you been working on our game any recently?" Its really challenged me as a DM to entertain them but at the same time, it has become such a labor of love. They and myself couldn't be happier and I wouldn't have it any other way. If u never gave DM'd for kids, you just don't know what you are missing. Thanks guys! Good job!

So good. great advice! You're right that kids get hooked fast. I have been running D&D sessions for my kids (currently 6 & almost 8) and their friend (11), and they would love it if we could play regularly; as it is, we only manage it each school holidays. Ours all started about 1-2 years ago, because me and my eldest were hanging out on easter, and decided we'd do an "egg hunt", using my minis and terrain pieces, with easter eggs as treasure.

My first sessions with my daughter was when she was 5/6 and we’re with all my terrain and monsters and in 20ish minute sections…really just establishing the concept of the game: 1) here’s the situation what do you do, 2) I do x, 3) roll and results. Really just I roll she rolls highest wins. First real session was the MLP rpg. With three other 6 year olds. Fun…but chaos. Had to be a little loose on the rules. First real D&D one shot was last week with an 11 year old and her dad and my and my now 7 year old. 3.5 hours! I had no idea they would be so enraptured! A little loose on some of the rules…but meh! We ALL had a blast. Made my daughter a special sheet that explained spells in words she could understand more easily. Super fun!

My girls are six and they love to play ‘’mind games’ with their uncles and cousins (which are basically mini role playing games where we just sit down and pretend we’re exploring dungeons etc) but they can’t read yet. We also like to LARP I guess as a family with our cousins etc. I’ve been wanting to get into this with them but it’s daunting to start for sure! I’ve been hoping to find some pregenerated quests to start with. Thank you for this video!

I loved this video for a couple of reasons; Seeing the excited smiles on those kids faces, reminded me of when my brother, and I discovered D&D and AD&D as kids. Listening about the kids wanting to talk about D&D at the beach, sounds like they really enjoyed it. Then the photos of them checking out minis at the store picking out what they envision their character to look like, or want to look like. I thought was I that excited when I was a kid? Yes I think I was. Keep up the great videos, and I have to ask.... When are you going to run another game Uncle Mark?

I've been doing this for years. It's weird to watch a video about this and hear them basically suggest all the things I've been already doing. Premade characters, light story, counters or cards for everything. I hadn't thought about the homebrew thing, however. The idea of tailoring it to the players hadn't even crossed my mind. I was only writing my own because I needed something simple.

I'm a 2nd grade teacher and a D&D nerd. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and I caught the D&D bug when I was 10 years old. I loved this video and I love the idea of exposing my own kids and perhaps even some of my students to this game and show them how fun D&D can be. I've already started with my own son, but I'm curious of your thoughts on trying to begin a gaming group of students over the summer? How would you approach the idea as an elementary teacher? There is a gaming store here in our small town which would probably host our game during a summer evening. Do you think this is a good idea or am I reaching?
@DungeonClass
@DungeonClass 2 года назад
I would highly recommend it. Kids that age have a wonderful imagination and would love it. I would keep the sessions short. Make sure you have a figurine or a token to represent the character and I would use a map. They are going to need some manipulatives. Your local game store should help with the figurines as you are working to make future customers. As for the adventure, I would make it a heist kind of adventure and make it funny. I would also be flexible. They may give you some pretty cool ideas from their questions. Let us know if you have any more questions. I am excited for you.

Mark, what do you teach? Love your video. I teach middle school English. I've run an after-school D&D group for years. Started with 2e...last year, tried 5e. This upcoming school year, each teacher has to develop a unified arts class for our middle schoolers. Admin asked if I could do something around my "D&D stuff." So, I wrote up a proposal for a unified arts based around gaming. Really unsure about how I'm going to do this, but, looking forward to the challenge. I'm, pretty much going to make it a focus on the Fantasy Genre...watch a fantasy movie (not sure which...maybe the first D&D [cringe] movie), talk about the different roles (classes) shown in the movie...then, go onto what would make a good group composition. Have the kids create characters, complete with backgrounds...have them draw them, write bios...maybe, eventually, play and have the students write up what happened from their characters' perspectives and share to the group. My usual after-school groups average about 5 students...so, if the class is going to be 15+, this might pose some issues with running the game. Any suggestions would be welcome. Just wanted to say, "Hi" and encourage you both on the great videos...I will definitely tune in to others.
@DungeonClass
@DungeonClass 3 года назад
Hey Dale, thanks for watching. I teach high school English with all seniors (my 24th year) I love the idea having D&D as a unified arts class. That is pretty cool. Good idea centering it around a fantasy movie. It is too bad you can't really show a bit of Critical Role (content is a bit rough for school) to kind of show what playing D&D looks like. Maybe you can find a clip that is school appropriate. It kind of gives them an idea. I would suggest maybe you do a fishbowl kind of roleplaying with the kids maybe with lines written for the players as well so they can watch what it looks like. As for larger number you could enlist something like Gygax used. He had a co-DM and "coaches" who would referee dozens of players. I have thought about what they could like with you being the storyteller -three different parties with a coach doing things like running combat. However, that would be cumbersome. I think the best idea is to get get three people to DM three groups (after they see what it looks like). Have them run something like Lost Mines of Phandelver from the Starter Set. (available on Amazon --amzn.to/3iS8tlF-- Maybe admin can spring for the $39ish dollars it would cost for three starter sets. Everything is laid out for them including pre-made characters and the DMs just have to read through the adventure book as they go and it walks them through playing. I think it could work. They then can write about their adventure or keep a journal as their character . Hope that helps.-Mark-

@@DungeonClass I tried Phandelver with last year's group...I got tired to trying to railroad the party back to the story line...so, I just went with what I used to do with my 2e groups, and just listened to what they players were saying and doing and basing a homebrew off that...and that went a lot better. I've found the younger players were more just into hunting down monsters than getting into any actually story lines. The first "adventure" I went with after abandoning Phandelver was Matt Coleville's Delian Tomb from one of his earlier Running the Game videos. I thought about Critical Role, but that is awful intimidating seeing how "in-character" all the players always were...the acting skills are tremendous. Bill Allan (D&D with High School Kids) might be another choice...they very rarely cuss and the roleplaying is less intimidating...and, the students would see other players (about) their ages playing the game. Thank you for your reply.
