A note on the video! Something which I noticed afterward was my tendency to “release” the club more after impact. This is something Mickleson also does around the green. Although I should have pointed it out more 👍❤️

I was going to mention that, particularly on the third ball of your second set (up the hill). ;)

@Tucson Jim Despite opening his body and his club face, Mickelson swings along the target line. Swinging along your open shoulder line will cause the cut that you described. He mentions that in one of his videos, but almost in passing. He will swing along his shoulder line to hit a deliberate cut, as here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FTVvCnenx1M.html
@msalzberg4962
@msalzberg4962 4 года назад
@Tucson Jim Depending on the lie, distance to green, and distance to the flag, I use either method. I prefer the hinge and hold for getting a longer run out, and if I'm three feet off the green, and the pin is six feet on the green, I'll use almost a putting stroke to get the ball to pop up and then stop quickly. I use my regular grip on everything but my putter.
@msalzberg4962
@msalzberg4962 4 года назад
@Tucson Jim Yes, I can see how when the only thing I wrote I wrote about my grip is "I use my regular grip on everything but my putter" you could get confused and think I change my grip when chipping.

Playing from a 2 in earlier years, I found my 60 degree very versatile. Now that I'm older and 'wiser' on the golf course, I use a lot more of these techniques by moving the ball around and different wedges. With the flop shot I remember David Leadbetter advising to have a very weak right hand grip to stop your hands from 'turning over'. Great video as always Peter.

My short game is all Lefty inspired: Back in high school, Phil was the only lefty a lefty could follow that got any attention. So, using my only wedge, a 52* American Open low bounce, I learned to use it for just about any shot I had from a 130 yards in. Nowadays, I have a few more wedges, and yes, that includes a 64*, and love my 60* PM grind; it's absolute money from bunkers. That may be why some of my playing partners say "I hate you" after some of the shots I hit with it^^ Needless to say, but great video Pete...much enjoyed.

Great video Pete. And really good results from you on these shots. Tbh, I haven't had a whole lot of success with hinge and hold because of how steep it is and because for me success seems to equate to keeping my wrists free of tension through impact. As soon as I try to control that wrist angle I tend to stick it in the ground. Even so, I'm going to cherry pick some of these ideas and see what happens!

Just an observation from someone who also coaches. Something you do reflexively that I observe many if not most beginners do not is the ‘side bend’ backwards at the start of your downswing. On a cause and effect level, compared to beginners who think the spine should be kept straight, is a shallowing of the club head path both in the downswing and through impact. In the finish as the hands rotate left with the torso the club head continues to track down the stance line (established with heels not toes) pulling the arms straight. If the spine is kept straight the bio-mechanics and physics will swing the club head to the left after impact creating balance problems the beginner’s brain will reflexively react to by bending the arms at the elbows and redirecting the force backwards instead bracing against it with the back side bend as you do reflexively. The simple way to get someone to understand the side bend thing in the downswing is to have them throw a few golf balls side arm.

Hi Peter, great instruction video. I just have a question if you could please assist it would be really appreciated. When ball position is on back foot with shaft leaning forward I've seen and heard seen other instructors say it promotes the leading edge to dig the ground and not using the bounce plus on top of that due to a steep angle of attack of the hinge and hold it's much harder to make proper contact with the ball. In your experience with both the hinge & hold technique vs a much more straight back and shallow angle of attack with ball position more towards the middle of stance, which one works for you more and why?

Nice video Pete! One thing I’ve noticed on your video and another I viewed recently is not much mention (maybe I missed it) of picking a spot to land the ball, say 1/2 or 1/3 way to the hole. This seems to help me if I think of it while chipping. Also, I have recently purchased the Costco wedges, which I feel has helped my game. I don’t think I’m good enough to spend the money on the Callaway’s, although they might be a little better?

Those wedges feel pretty good around the greens but they are tough to hit approach shots with. I ended up going with Vokey SM8s because I found them more versatile if I wanted to hit them as a normal club while still giving me all the feel and control I need around the green.

I found the exact same thing. I've had the chipping yips for over a year, with an involuntary jerk of my right hand through impact, which I found impossible to control. I was seriously considering giving up the game. With Phil's hinge and hold, the right hand is basically out of play, because it just stays hinged. Unbelievable difference now, and I would recommend it to anyone suffering from the same affliction.
