Paul, I caught one of Carlos' picks in 2007. It was a purple dunlop big stubby AND boy was it heavily used - there are literal chunks missing (I'm looking at it now). That is a testament to what you said about his "hard" playing style.

As an indie kid in the early 2000s, it goes without saying that Carlos D's basslines are now part of my genetic heritage I'm working on finishing my first album right now, and the bassline of my track "Afterglow" is 110% hero worship / homage to the man himself literally one of my goals on this track is that anyone familiar will hear it and instantly go "oh that's an Interpol bassline" IOW I'm just here to sound more like Carlos

If you want to understand why CD might have found Interpol a little limiting in the end, listen to 'Public Pervert' from Antics, and then listen to the Carlos D Remix of the same song, which was included on the Antics bonus disk. The remix picks up one bass riff from the original, brings it front and centre, and reconstructs the entire song around it as though it were a disco classic. it doesn't hurt that it's one of the most naggingly hypnotic bass riffs imaginable.

i always found his bass lines so vital to their sound. the guitar parts are sort of droning and monotonous indie/post-punk style (at least on their first) but the bass added much needed melodic detail on many of those tracks.

The baselines on Interpol’s early albums are so cool. The New is amazing and Untitled is totally carried by the bass as the guitars create droning textures. I wonder if it’s worth looking at the bass on Is This It? The early 00s was a great time for bass harmonies

@soysaucehairdye7869

@soysaucehairdye7869
@soysaucehairdye7869 2 года назад
@@erikjansen8597 yeah I agree. I think Interpol always got the Joy Division comparison, because Paul Banks and Ian Curtis are both low tenors that sing more in the style of a baritone and thus their voices have some similarity to each other and more people know of joy division than the chameleons, the sound, lowlife, and asylum party.

@@soysaucehairdye7869 BTW. What are your thoughts on the drums comparison? I am thinking Interpol's style of drumming is closer to Joy Division, because the Chameleon's drumming sounds more progressive. But recently i heard live sessions and he was sounding througt DI and with almost no EQ, and still soundig solid. Maybe he rolled down treble knob 30% or 50% and used old rounds in every session.
