This is such an important and fundamental rule that affects your approach to everything you do on the piano. Yet, everyone is forgets/neglects this and ends up in struggling to advance beyond certain level.
In this video, I'm revisiting the finger shape rules, like I do regularly in my piano lessons, with more details and examples to further explain how you should play the keys, why important, and how it affects your overall performance.

Okay, I may be a terrible pianist, but Akira-san's violin playing makes me feel a thousand times better about my life choices. Thank you for that. 😊

Not sure why it's not commonly shared. We piano teachers mention this every single day during lessons (or maybe other teachers don't) :)

Very good reminder ! I think i have a problem with my fifth finger tho (and maybe others haha). It seems so flexible that i have difficulties to form a good arch with the three joints. My second joint (middle one) tends to "collapse" and my finger is flat until the last joints. Depending of the position, my last joint can collapse too and flex on the other side. My last teacher said i probably have some kind of "hypermobility" for my finger joints, but i feel it can be hard to have a good control on it... I will try to work on it, but i'm not sure how to overcome this problem right now. Congratulations for the videos, very useful stuff !

One of my colleagues has double joint, but she still plays like everyone else. I hope you can overcome your issues as well and enjoy this beautiful instrument.

What would I do if my index finger nails is in the way. If I cut it any shorter, it would cut into my flesh. The most I can make is a 45 degree angle with the key without touching the key with the nail first

I have never seen that before. But if that's really the case, we have to come up with workaround. But I really need to see to determine what's the best course of action is. If you are interested, you can sign up for a consultation at www.pianowithakira.com

Hi Akira. What about Horowitz?. He used special prepared pianos, but used quite a different technique
@AkiraIkegamiChannel
@AkiraIkegamiChannel 4 месяца назад
Good question! When you are at Horowitz's level, you can do whatever you want :) He eventually found his own way of playing the piano (probably after years and years of trials and errors). But that doesn't mean it works for everyone else. I'm not sure if it's true or not, but one of my teachers who studied with Horowitz said he told his pupils not to play like him.

Hi Akira! I've seen some professional pianists collapsing their fingers, even when they are playing fast, you know why? Is there any exception? This is an example by Lang Lang: ru-vid.comBxlhA103gn0?si=5ajjSBNA0Et_Xpxl
@AkiraIkegamiChannel

I don't see him collapsing fingers in this video. In fact, I see his fingers beautifully executing fast passages using all 3 joints of fingers. What may looks like collapsing fingers is him stretching fingers to reach wide intervals. The curve is shallow, but not completely collapsing, as far as I can see.

I think this is totally wrong advice. The problem with this claw like finger shape is that the wrist is held above the back of the hand, and that requires lifting the hand from a relaxed position. In fact, it is very tiring, and good piano playing shouldn't be tiring. Instead, one should use the normal weight of the hand.
@AkiraIkegamiChannel
@AkiraIkegamiChannel 4 месяца назад
That is a wrong approach. But not because of the claw like fingers, but because you are awkwardly lifting your wrist. I've seen a few students do that to curve fingers, and it's probably a bad habit you picked up at some point. I didn't mention anything about lifting your wrists above the hand, and if done correctly, curving fingers shouldn't cause any of that. I play this way all the time and my brain gets tired before my hands do.
