@NotAPlane you do realise that you directly comparing it to shape of my heart is just wrong and if your intention was to say that shape of my heart is better you'd be better off just saying that it is a completely different song which is better than the other
Big thanks Justin, you've taught me pretty much everything I know on guitar! Just wanted to say that on the bit you talk about at 7:40, from looking at the video you posted underneath on your website, I'm sure he plays a 7th fret harmonic on the D string rather than the awkward 5th on the E.
Justin You are a True living Legend...Thank you so much really appreciate your head they way you lay it out for us and the way you put it across is so tangible. Your the man..❤
Hi Justin. Your tutorial is still rocking after all those years ! And DM confirmed your toughts about positions and fingerings on Beato interview. IMHO better to play "original way" but what to do with no-cut guitars except to play standard cheat with bass line on 5th string. I dont rven bother anymore to twist those fingers correctly. I cheat as DM uset to cheat, but nowadays he plays it correctly again
At 7:13 of the video, one could just barre the notes in the 4th fret with the index finger for ease of playing :) Thank you very much ofr this tutorial.. I've learning a couple of song from channel, great teaching man!!
I have a completly different fingering to this but use the same notes on strings 1,2 and 3 but i like some of the voicings you use on this lesson and so will have a hybrid version of both yours and mine. First class lesson Justin as usual, really enjoy your stuff. I've learned a great deal from your vids.
Your best bet is with an electro acoustic that has a cutaway for the upper frets. Yamaha makes a series called The NPX which is a nylon string electro acoustic. A nice guitar & reasonably priced.
It seems "your" way is in fact the way Dominic Miller played it on the album according to his recent interview with Rick Beato! He said he had a cutaway guitar at the time so that made it easy. And the live thing he does is because it's so hard (as you point out) to play that awkward chord whilst standing, so he changed it to make it easier playing live.
Always love finding cool new riff/song diddies i've never seen b4. Great lesson that didnt laboriously go over minor trivial details most people capable of playing this song know. Not talking about theory though, I like your analysis of chords and all that jazz. Best Teacher on youtube for technique and song imo. Justin transcribes from the record then searches for videos of the artist playing it live unlike most teachers who are often careless and lacking the intricate details.
That G#m11 chord absolutely kills my index finger when barring!! Great lesson, Justin! I've got the basics down pat, just gotta practice it a bit more!
Great job dissecting that song Justin. Just a thought on your version vs. the Dominic Miller version: It seems he is playing a smaller parlor type guitar in some of his live performances. I know many of those12 fret parlor guitars have the shorter 24-7/8 fret scale which in turn would make shaping his version of those chords a little easier. Also, shaping your version of the chords up on the 14th fret on a 12 fret guitar is...well next to impossible!!! Just a thought... I so happen to have a Taylor 512ce 12 fret guitar so I will get to work on this song. Thank you again!
I once had the opportunity to ask Dominic about this and he actually did record it way up the neck but chose to use a different fingering on tour. Just thought you'd like to know.
Sorry for my English, I didn't understand last words about a "tune" variation, where is the lesson for it ? Thank you for this wonderful lesson, you'r The Guy !!
Thanks Justin, I do what you do, watch the live videos and read the tabs and sometimes hearing different things but I think you found the album ' option' that we all know. Like Bas van Dijk I wonder why he's fretting the A string.. must be a sound wise choice I suppose. But thanks again you are clear and sincere.
My classical acoustic doesn't have access above 12 that's probably why he does it the other way. And I had a hard time with the first drop back to 2nd fret with bass note on the 5th of low E, which is an A note so I just play the open A string instead and bar the rest of the 2nd. Sounds the same, much easier. You make awesome tutorials, thanks man.
Justin is right about the fingering and the position, Dominic plays from a different position live but this is how it is played in the studio version, If you go and have a look at the shape of my heart video, you can see Dominic starts playing at the 14th fret around 2:00.
@ickayR ring finger 5th fret Low E, pinky finger 5th fret D string, index finger barres g and b at 2nd fret, and middle finger hammers onto 4rd fret on the G string. [ 5x522(2) ]. If you have trouble with the ring finger on the low E string you can just replace that with The open A string instead.
Can I ask what the point is of fretting the A at the 6th string of the 5th fret, when you could forego the massive stretch and just play the 5th string open? Thanks for the amazing tutorial though :)
Thank you _SOOO_ much for this. I just recently tried to learn this one because it sounds so incredibly nice, but wasn't quite able to nail it down. Once again, you're my hero.
Hello! I have a question about what you start showing at 4.00. Why do you have to make a big stretch with your third finger all the way to the fifth fret of the upper E string if you can just hit the open A srting and avoid therefore the difficulty of making the stretch?
I was going to ask the same before I saw your comment. With a steel string in a live situation where you're singing on top of the guitar, it's just too much of jump to try and catch all those strings cleanly. Dominic isn't doing the singing and with the classical fingering he's not making such a big jump. Open A is the way to go.
Dominic Miller did write the music. Sting wrote the lyrics. Your playing up at the 14th fret is how Dominic played it in the studio. He had a cutaway nylon string electric guitar. But the guitar he uses in concerts is different, so he is forced to play lower down the neck which he actually finds to be more difficult.
Thanks for the tutorial I prefer to play it the way Dominic plays it because on a classical guitar you only have 12 frets clear. And the part you find hard to play I use a barre. Dominic is able to play it the way he plays it because he uses small guitars with a very short scale.
Dominic Miller's fingering is fine if you're playing a classical. In fact, it's the only way since there's no 14th fret. On a steel string though, this fingering is not only easier but sounds better tonally. The only thing I'd change is the Asus at 4:00. Just play it with an open A string and forget the low E string. Too hard to catch all the notes cleanly with such a big jump at tempo, especially if you're singing the lead as well.
I find it's easy to play the part at 7:32 if you use your index finger to just bar the 4th fret instead of pressing down on the two strings using the index and middle fingers
hey Justin, first of all great lesson! Could u do a lesson on Bring it on Home by Led Zeppelin i really love the riff and i thought it would be great for your riff lessons?
@mattphelanguitar for the 9th fret C#7sus4 1:57 into the video he explains it. For the "live" version though a barre would solve his problem and having one finger per string down on the neck is not as big a deal as the stuff up past the 7th fret or so.
