I always loved playing this song. I should have known it was lukather. I was thinking Neil Giraldo, but he would have used less effects (I think). Excellent job breaking the song down! :D EV

Fee Waybill is an incredible human being and genius, and while this song was a well known hit, The Tubes are definitely a band that everyone should get to know their catalog. So outrageous and tongue and cheek and brilliant! Glad to see this covered!

I played drums in a band back in the '80s and we did this tune. One of my favorite tunes to play on drums, and now that I play guitar too, a favorite on that instrument as well. The crowd always loved this tune, and we loved playing it!

In 1983 I took a trip from California to NJ to visit my Uncle and Aunt. My cousin, same age as me (16) was very into the "She's a Beauty" tune that was climbing the charts at that time from the album "Outside Inside". The Tubes happened to be playing close by in NY on tour that week. We got tix and went. It was my first "Real" concert. I was blown away! Not only was its a GREAT, GREAT live show, I realized how many great songs they had (btw it still holds up as one of the best I've seen live even now having been to dozens of concerts). When I got back to Cali I bought several of their albums and went to see them again in a month or so on the same tour. Been a fan of The Tubes ever since. Thanks for the lesson. This band seems to have slipped through the cracks over time. But the album this song is from (Backwards Completion Principle) and "Outside Inside", which is great from start to finish (as well as "Love Bomb" Prod./and featuring Todd Rundgren) are all solid albums. Thanks again. Looking forward to the solo lesson! Cheers.

I own one of Steve's guitars. 1998 MM/EB Luke I. Signed on 2006 for me on the lower bout and we had a Meet and Greet in Nov 2020. Joe Williams was there with their Manage Steve Karas. I had to buy a KOA Luke I to play. He is the bomb! One f the best ever! Over 5000 credits among all the TOTO members and some idiot tried to tell us/me that they were not "real musicians". So I ask him to post his credits, songs and I got no response. Nothing like Ad Hoc responses to tell the level of knowledge of a poster.

I've been noticing that Talk To Ya Later on sheet music is copyrighted 1982 instead of 1981. And each and every copy of that sheet music is copyrighted 1982. And I'm not happy about that. I would call Fee Waybill about the sheet music. The Tubes' The Completion Backward Principle album came out in April, 1981. Not only that, it was recorded in August, 1980. Talk To Ya Later Sheet Music needs to be copyrighted 1981 instead of 1982. Can anybody tell me how I can get in contact with the publisher?

”David Foster was producing the record, and he said, “I need you to co-write a song with Fee [Waybill, Tubes singer].” I had never met Fee, and some of the other guys in the band were pissed off that they brought in a ringer. I didn’t know until I got there that there was any bad vibe at all. So it was me, [drummer] Prairie Prince, Foster, and Fee. I came up with the opening riff, and we ran with it and came up with the song. It was written and recorded in less than an hour. I overdubbed a bunch of guitars on it, and I also played bass, because the Tubes’ bass player refused to play on the track. He said, “It’s not a Tubes song. It wasn’t written by us.” And it was their first hit! For the solo at the end, there was one track left, and I had to do the thing in one pass. At the very end of it, it’s a little flat, but they wouldn’t let me fix it. There were certain imperfections on records back then. All the records of my childhood have things like the tambourine being way on top of the beat or something. But there’s a charm to the strings being out of tune, or the horns being a little off. It’s a vibe. Nobody cares. The standard for that is a lot different now.” Lukather in Guitar Player, august 2015.
