Hi sir...let me suggest u the easiest way to play the pentatonic scale if I may... For me from begining I only use the particular chord only for the whole progression or song. For example If the song key is Amajor u just solo on Amajor pentatonic the whole 5 pentatonic paterns. No matter what the following chords will be. U just use the A major pentatonic for the whole song and it work find. Same goes to other chords major or minor and t wilk work on any scales or modes u just use the chord's key scale. No need to bother what are the next chord its scale. Just use the chord key's scale only for the whole song or solo and u'll be find good to go.
Hi Dan, I'm not far behind you at 71 and it sounds like we're in similar territory on our learning curve... I wish I could find someone like you to jam with...
Dude! I'm a full-time, self-taught guitarist who's had a hand full of lessons to improve soloing and this 13 mins has been the most I've learned in years. Teaching is a skill in itself and you've got it, mate! Subbed
Can't imagine a better guitar 🎸 teacher than Steve. He really cares about students you can tell. I jam with Wilson Pickett's guitar player and many other guitar players that have been the opening act of many famous bands including Joe Banamassa but a great guitar Teacher like Steve's kind of patience is rare. Much-love brother and i thank you.
Hi! Thank you so much for your kind words. Happy to know you like the lessons and above all that you find them interesting and useful. Thanks again and any questions please feel free to ask anytime.

30 years ago this information was not available on this type of media. This one lesson took me literally years to understand. Most insightful lesson for any guitarist.
This was so helpful! So many teachers skip what they deem to be obvious but you explain in clear detail. Because of this video I'm finally starting to understand all of this. THANKYOU!
I feel like I owe you my bank account for this one lesson. This has done more for me than any in person lesson I've ever taken. I feel both ripped off by other guitar teachers and indebted to you for being a great one. If I ever actually make some money in this life, I will remember this and share some with you or pay it forward. Thanks.
Feel exactly the same. I texted this video to a group of musicians I regularly play with. We all agreed this is probably the single greatest lesson we've seen on youtube. There is so much here, but it is so well articulated in an efficient use of time. Kudos.
I could not of said it better James. So good to see positive comments that Steve so deserves. Can you believe I have seen some negative comments???? Robyn Sydney
This was by far the most helpful guitar lesson on pentatonic scales I found on RU-vid! Most videos on what you can do with pentatonics are super vague and unnecessarily complicated. You did a fantastic job in sharing just the basics.

Steve, this video has provided the 'missing link' for me. I am 65 years old; I picked up the guitar cold 5 years ago; I had some background in music from when I was 13 years old and the first thing I learned was the pentatonic scale patterns, but I never could quite figure out how to link them together. This video does that, not only mechanically, but musically. Great job!
Steve, you have connected the dots on something that has been stewing in my head for many moons and laid out in such simple terms - You're a LEGEND!!!!
There are so many convoluted teaching methods out there, nice to finally come across one that cuts right to the chase and explains it clearly. Thanks Steve
Thank you, and to all the great comments as well. I’m disabled with a spine injury and nerve damage, I love music and guitars (Shakuhachi/ Shinobue type flutes as well) but it’s not practical fir me to access professional lessons or truly do much, but study and learn and I can occasionally pick up one of my guitars and try a few things before I have to put it down. The videos abd comments are very helpful and motivating. Thanks for the time and effort on all the lessons 🙏🏻🫡🎸
Hi. My pleasure! Thanks so much for the comment and for sharing your story. Really glad to know you like the videos. Any questions please feel free to ask anytime.
Steve I have been playing 29 years in bands etc as a rythim guitarist. Never has anyone shown me this fast of way to get from makljor to minor pen. Freaking great video. Woww
THIS IS THE COOLEST TRICK ***EVER***. I seriously have no other need to find any other guitar teacher online except for Mr. Steve Stine :) A HUGE THANK YOU, once again, friend. Absolutely LOVE all your videos!
Man, I have to say I'm loving your lessons in particular. You have, by far, the most comprehensive and simple lessons I've come across on RU-vid. I've been playing songs with friends for the last three or four years now, but I knew nothing more than open chords the entire time. Recently picked up a Les Paul and I really struggled to understand how exactly I'm supposed to play it after coming from that. Just at the start of this week, I had picked up on the different scale positions, but really struggled to wrap my head around playing any scales during chord progressions. This video cleared it up for me perfectly and I can't thank you enough. Once I can move in and out of different positions along the neck comfortably, I'll feel much better. Gotta keep practicing, be patient, and I'm sure I'll get there soon. Thanks again!
This is the most useful video so far I have watched on pentatonic scale and progression with shapes. Thanks Steve, I have cleared up a lot of confusions with this.
Hi. My pleasure! Thanks so much for the comment and kind words. Happy to know the lesson was helpful and any questions please feel free to ask anytime!
Thanks a ton Steve! You taught me more in this video about working leads into chord progressions than I had learned in 20 years of frustrating guesswork from other players. You have unleashed the fun in playing guitar again. I have subscribed and will be sharing your videos.
This was so good...often I have been stuck in that first box. I like the feel of the major but couldn’t figure out why it sometimes didn’t fit. You just showed me that My problem was when i would slide forward 3 frets I would still use the old root note position from the minor box. Especially. I could never figure out why other people’s runs made melodic sense and sounded more “interesting” but the way you explained to resolve or utilize the next chords root for emphasis when the progression was over that chord makes this video golden. Like a pentatonic solo life hack. Can’t wait till I can seamlessly slip into that diatonic. I’ll get there🎸🔥FYI..subscribed
Ive been stuck for years while knowing the minor pentatonic scale but seriously one day of your videos and everything has changed bro! Thank you so much!

Well stated, sir. I've been trying to figure out how to sound more melodic and musical in my solos and you may have just provided me with they key I needed.
Thank you Steve, This actually glued a lot of concepts and positions I had lying around in my head and playing them separately. Now I'm actually trying to make music instead of just exercising different positions. Best regards!
Thanks steve. I totally get it now and the major minor... you just opened alot of doors for me.. can't wait to buy another keyboard to practice along with..Super Super jazzed
It always makes me smile the way you state the illusive obvious and it then becomes obvious to me. I spent over an hour playing along with this chord progression on my Looper last night and slowly the picture emerged and my cognizance of what to emphasize was brightened, as well as what "patterns" were there all along for each chord. Nobody has sparked more Aha moments for me than you and I thank you dearly. Looking forward to many more in the new Blues course.
WOW! My mind is blown! Great info on how to find the scale for the chord being played. I have struggled for so long and have stuck to rhythm playing because this was too complicated. I don’t play metal but I sure appreciate you!
This is a great lesson. I've been playing for years, but this is really pushing me to the next level. You're an excellent teacher Steve, with a real encouraging spirit. Thanks!!
i've been learning guitar for 4 years by myself and various youtube videos. only after i see your videos for the past 1 month that i felt like i'm learning something about playing a guitar. you doing a good job in all of your videos in explaining music in its simplest understandable form for those who aren't music major or had any official music classes. thank you so much
I’m looking at your catalog of videos and it’s like you’re reading my mind. I didn’t even know what to call many of my questions and next steps. That’s how I known you’re excellent at what you do. I can’t tell you how many guitar videos I’ve watched that haven’t done a fraction of what just one of yours have. Thank you SO much! I’ll be recommending for sure 🤘🙏
Watching your videos here from Philippines.I can say that this is one of the best tutorial i've ever watched. As a beginner for guitar scaling now I can clearly understand how the Pentatonic Scale works. Thank you Mr. Steve.
At last. This is the best approach to scale use I have ever seen. I've often watched your (and other contributors) lessons without anything earth-shattering happening but...This one is a doozie my friend. It brings into alignment a lot of 'stuff' that didn't quite click in my mind before. Thank you so very much. I feel invigorated, inspired, I now know why I should learn all five pentatonic shapes so I can play them anywhere...and where they can be played appropriately. talk about unlocking a door. Cheers.
Ok Steve, I finally get it playing over the chords! I've heard a hundred explanations and the way you taught it gave me a huge aha moment! I can't thank you enough! You sir are an awesome teacher!

Steve's videos are very informative as, in addition to his style of explaining things, he gets into some theory which unfortunately many guitarists are weak on. At 10:27 he starts to talk positions/patterns. At 10:53 he delves into the C-A-G-E-D system. He shows you the F and G major using the D pattern of the C-A-G-E-D System. I've been playing guitar and bass for 55 years and I'm surprised at how many musicians (guitarists) do not understand these concepts. Minor and major pentatonic, as well as the blues scale (not a PENTAtonic scale) are must-haves for anyone who plays rock, country, blues. My suggestion is to practice, practice, practice these scales in all keys in all locations on the neck. Plus, study some basic theory. Great video!
The amount or thinking about all the changing positions is killing me.... I know it is the same pattern all over again but that time needed to realize what is where is the problem. Then trying to make up something senseful out of it in time, damnit.
This is a brilliant lesson once you’re ready for it. I’m so grateful to be advancing to a stage where I understand the simplicity and beauty of this lesson. Thank you so much, Steve. At 47 years of age, I feel like a new man every time something “clicks” in understanding guitar. This lesson was “click” material. Thank you from Qld, Australia :)
This is a really good lesson that finally explains how to reconcile playing over chord changes and making it sound melodic. Really helpful and well presented. Thanks 🙏
Thx Steve. Been playing for about 40 yrs. Professional musician, and gotta say..in all my years playing....this really simplified things! I overthink my playing wayyyy too much, lol!

This video is a major breakthrough for me. I know the first two shapes, but had no idea why sometimes I landed on a good note, and other times, a sour. I was flying blind! Just learned more in 13 minutes than the last 15 years! Thank-you so much. You're a great teacher!!

Steve - All I can say is thank you from the bottom of my heart! Man I tell ya, I've struggled with trying to understand how to apply maj and min pentatonic scales, and to be honest had been put off playing guitar by the confusion suffered by watching other online lessons. I picked up the guitar yesterday for the first time in about a year and started to get the fingers going again. I was looking for an online tut for "Blue On Black" and stumbled across your channel. Thank you so very much !! Needless to say, I have subscribed. You have given me reason to start playing again. Humbled.
