I’m a 51 year old beginner who started practicing the pentatonic scale two weeks ago. In 10 minutes this video had me playing 5 notes all over the fret board between the 3rd and 15th frets. That’s a pretty damn awesome light bulb moment for me!

Ive been stuck in the pentatonic box for a year now & im SO sick of it. How did you manage 20+ years of that same sound over and over again? No matter your licks or phrasing i feel like it always holds the same sound behind it and i hate it... i guess thats why we’re here tho right?! Hahah

Steve Stine is such an excellent instructor because he doesn't go too fast, and CLEARLY AND THOROUGHLY will explain the same concept in different ways, so that you actually get it!! He puts himself in the shoes of the people who are actually NOT shredders like he is, and patiently but comprehensively articulates and conveys exactly how to make this work for YOU, as we are learning these things. Steve Stine, thank you a million times; we truly appreciate your efforts in helping us to improve.

Finding the "two string" octaves from each note along a single string (such as A string) can help you master the notes as they go up and down the fret board. So for the note F on the A-string: F is on the 8th fret, the next closest octave of F(going down) is, on the G string at fret 10. That is F on A-string, but an octave higher. (An octave lower would be on the B string at fret 6) Learn those two string octaves for each note as they exist on each string. There really isn't all that many... Then you can connect any scale.

I’ve tried the five position thing, but constantly come back to this way of thinking as well. It’s usable in real-time for me. The five positions aren’t (for me).
@gabort4555
@gabort4555 5 лет назад
Thank you for this explanation! I learned about scales and positions for fifteen years but I never understood the importance of learning all the position of a scale. Only because nobody told me that positions should be bound together. I always just jumped between them and that didn't make to much sense. And somehow that way I never practiced to knit them together to a continous thing. Funny how a good teacher can change everything in 15 minutes. After a few hours I first watched this video I could play the E minor pentatonic scale from the nut to the end of the fretboard and back (with some mistakes). I already knew the positions in fact but I never practiced how they fit together like a puzzle. I never knew the importance to practice for hours to get across the border of the positions and back. For three weeks after that I just played (mainly) E and A minor pentatonic scales for blues backing tracks it was so much fun. I know that these are only the basics to play the guitar. Or maybe it is an intermediate level thing. But it is so exciting and groundbreaking. I have just watched this again and would like to thank you. This is the most important video for me about how learn scales on the guitar. You really teach the people to fish.

So many guitar teachers on RU-vid, but I must say you are one of the best. Everyone else explains music/guitar theory like its complex algebra or quantum physics. I'm completely lost in the first 5 minutes or even if I logically understand what they're saying I can't actually apply it in my playing. You just seem to have such a way of teaching and demonstrating that makes sense. Every video is a "AHA!!!" moment for me which falls so easily like a puzzle piece in my mind. I've looked at many sites / channels offering guitar and stumbled onto a video from Steve and Guitarzoom, absolutely amazed.. The two videos on basic scales / chords discusing the chromatic, pentatonic, diatonic scales, how triads form chords and the how / why of sharps and flats... that was it.... I was hooked. Add Steves attention to detail, simplify the boring and positive attitude as an instructor we have the best of the best here. Wish Yuetube was around in 1970! You're damn right! I totally agree with you. And I'll add that the best way to get this approach of the fretboard is to work on existing solos. When you try to play the beginning of the "Stairway to Heaven" solo e.g., you notice straightaway you're playing over Am pentatonic 1st position, but then you can't get stuck on this position. You have to move up and down the board (even if you don't want to, you have to in order to reach higher notes). You find back this 1st position at the end of the solo but ... one octave higher (17th fret instead of 5th). I learn also a lot with the solos of "Whole lotta Love" (Led Zep) and "Comfortably Numb" (Pink Floyd). Listen to them and "read" them (tablatures or staves) before trying to play them. I'm not ashamed of the boxes 'cause they're really convenient especially when you're a beginner but then you have to move on. I thought also to paste some little colored stickers all over the board to visualize more easily my scales (if the note can be played, a sticker ; if not, no sticker) but I never did it (too lazy I suppose...) but if this trick can help beginners. See you! Nico from Grenoble

Awesome video! This is must-see for anyone who knows about positions (or "patterns" as they're sometimes referred to) but never understood exactly what they are good for or how to apply them. This vid provided a breakthrough moment for me, and after watching it I applied the "meandering" concept of just taking my time to play through the positions up and down the neck, and had a blast. I found I could expand soloing not only for a given chord, but also for progressions like good ol' I IV V. The great thing about expanding your use of the fret board is that not only do you look cooler because it suggests you're not a rank beginner, but you also sound cooler because of all the different tonal colorings you get when you move all around the fret board.

This was a glorious lesson Steve. Weaving the pentatonic scales was something I was taught in the first couple of weeks of picking up a guitar. Just got back into playing after being away from it for years and you've inspired me to learn the diatonic scales now too. I really like how you stress upon your students the importance of a holistic vision with regards to their playing yet condem an "all or nothing" attitude towards knowledge or technique. Thanks Steve, for what you do. Remember folks: Find your individual string arpeggios on each string, as that really helps connect positions. Example: C major chord, find CEG(B the 7th too) on a single string. Do that for each chord in the chosen key, on each string. C Major for reference: CDEFGAB CEG (C major), EGB (E minor), GBD (G major), BDF (B diminished), DFA (D minor), FAC (F Major), ACE (A minor). (Typo edit).

Great lesson. I picked up my old guitar during the lockdown . Hadn’t touched it in 35 years. I’ve struggled to learn the five positions in Aminor pentatonic. The other day I tried E minor pentatonic, first position, on 12 th fret. Now I’m lost again. I can’t imagine learning another scale like major pentatonic. And what I play in A minor still sounds terrible. So I was listening to Pink Floyd and the Eagles yesterday. The lead guitarists are so melodic. How do they do that and what scales are they using?
@loredw4538
@loredw4538 4 года назад
I'm not an expert player but I found out by studying a bit of theory that by starting your licks with the correct note - the one matching the chord currently being played - you can make more melodic licks. Takes a bit to learn where notes are.

Thanks for the kind words, Bobby! And thanks for watching! Thanks for watching, Wayne! Getting comfortable with how you hold the guitar is definitely important. And be sure to stretch before you play. Here's a video where Steve shows some of his favorite stretches: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FmGcNRZsZQE.html The most important thing is, your wrist shouldn't be hurting. Sometimes chords can put your wrist in an awkward position if you're holding your guitar a certain way, and a small change in position can sometimes make a big difference. If you play sitting down, try shifting the guitar to a different spot on your lap, or changing the angle of the neck. And if you play standing up, adjust the strap to a few different lengths, and see if you can find a sweet spot where you can play what you need to play without getting your wrist into an awkward position. Either way, it's important to find the right way for you to hold the guitar. Holding it the wrong way can cause minor discomfort at first, and major discomfort if you ignore it, in the form of tendonitis and other similar ailments. So remember: always stretch, and find a way to play that's comfortable for you. Don't worry about what this or that guitarist does, find what works for you and stick with it. Hope this helps! :-) Just a heads-up, if you want to spice up your leads and create killer guitar solos from scratch, make sure you check out Steve’s Greatest Licks Bundle. It’s 10 of Steve’s best licks courses in one bundle. And the bundle price is less than what some of the individual courses normally cost. Good info. I had this issue and can share some insights. Here is the deal, decide to learn ALL 5 pentatonic patterns. There are 5 shapes (patterns) and they contain the same 5 (penta) notes. Starting for example in the key of Em Penta (what he is playing.) You can find color coded diagrams online for each of the 5 positions. Print it out and make up 1 single slide that will get you into shape #2. Draw it on the paper so you have it. From #2, find a slide that will get you into shape #3 and so on. You MUST drill this 1,000 times to own it- carve it into your brain. Before too long, you will be able to link all 5 effortlessly. If it makes you feel better- I use to be bad. Quit playing after my first lesson because it was too hard and I couldn't even play a chord. Now I can solo to SRV at 140bpm literally blindfolded (I play in the dark sometimes with headphones.) I still have much to learn, but the point is, anyone can do this. The trick is focus. Be very stubborn. Learn one pattern backwards and forwards- take a week or a month or a year- it doesn't matter. Then and only then, move on to shape #2 AND LINK the two. If you start only in 1 key e.g., E, it is so much easier to begin to visualize the pattern and how they (all 5) link together. Eventually you will be able to jump around shape 1 to 5 to 3 to 2 to 4, etc., but for now, learn each one and link in order. In Em, know that fret 12 starts all over again (play and hear the octave- open E and fret 12.) After you master this (and you can), you can play so much- especially rock and blues. Em is an extremely popular key. The great news is that you have now basically learned how to solo in all the other keys too- you just start on a different note e.g., A (5th fret.) The pattern is exactly the same. At first it will sound like you are playing a pattern but dare to embellish, bring your own feel and style- less is usually more. Fake and throw in some licks that you can find online e.g., Lick in Em. When you string it all together, it's a solo. Don't rush it- get it down solid before moving on to other modes, scales, etc. Note, when you play the first pattern in the first position using Em, the plastic nut (strings go through it) acts exactly like your first finger (on E- in 1st position it is open). Pretend like your first finger is the nut and you will see the patter- 1-4, 1-3, 1-3, 1-3, 1-4, 1-4. It's extremely easy to do this- it just takes doing it a few times for it to click. There is no big mystery to it actually. Go up to E (12th fret- thick string) and listen how it is exactly the same- SEE the pattern. Eventually you will hopefully be able to use your ear and not rely on patterns- I am still not quite there yet (hence why I clicked on this video!) There is no wrong way to play as long as you are having fun.

Wow, you're a really patient teacher. Thanks for posting. I've been playing the stupid pentatonic scale with my like tricks, for friggin 30 years or so. All my friends and strangers think I'm some kinda guitar guru, because I can shred in any key, but what they don't realize is that it's usually the same few shapes just moved around, depending on the root or key note. If consider myself an intermediate. I can chug, I'm fast, great timing, decent with chord shapes,wonderful ear etc, but if I played a note on any given spot on the fret board, and somebody asked me what note that was, I couldn't tell them. I don't know Theory or anything besides pretty much Blues and Metal licks. I've been stuck in a box for years. I have like six electric guitars, a 5-string bass, an acoustic, a marshall, and all of the bells and whistles on my computer to record , including stereo monitor speakers, and interface, a keyboard station with the drum pads, and I make some good music and I even put it on SoundCloud. But there's no real structure to my music even though it sounds fun. To an untrained ear, it sounds like I shred, and believe me I can, but to the person who knows music, they know that there is little structure in the way I build a song. So Steve my question is what do I work on first? I've been strengthening and conditioning my fingers based on some other lessons of yours. but what would be my first step honestly and learning, truly learning to know my fretboard???
@Guitarzoom
@Guitarzoom 5 лет назад
In my opinion, the "trick" to learning the fretboard is to study one position at a time, and learn to ABSOLUTELY see it. Playing it and seeing it are two different things, and you can't really get good at playing it until you truly "see" it. Once you have truly learned to visualize that particular position, then start working on "playing" it...up and down, back and forth, side to side, because the next trick is to get creative with it, but again, you cannot get creative unless you do the first two things. AND, this doesn't happen (at least in my experience) in a week, these things take patience and time. THEN, you can either start developing licks and pattern ideas in that position, OR you could learn the next position and start doing the same thing, with the ultimate goal of connecting the two positions together. It's WITHIN all these things that all these videos and my courses and everyone else's videos are trying to offer help...what is the best way for YOU to approach these things, and offer creative and fun ideas to develop these things? I could go on a long time with this, but that's where the answers are...develop a plan, and then fill the plan with the best practice elements for YOU and YOUR journey.

@@Guitarzoom thank you so much for responding I really appreciate it. I think it's great that you take the time to answer. I subscribed to your Channel. I did start with a fresh notebook, filling it up with things I think will help me. I drew a diagram of the fretboard and I put all of the major notes on it and I have been studying it the last 2 days. As I strike each note on my fretboard I'm looking at the diagram, and then I am saying each note out loud. My plan is to have every note on the fretboard memorized. Obviously the sharps and flats I did not include in my diagram. Also, I drew out the circle of fifths and have been watching videos about that as well. I think if I had taken the time with lessons when I was 12, when I first picked the guitar up, then things might have been a little different for me. But I was a stubborn youth LOL. I took three or four lessons from a gentleman and on one occasion because I hadn't studied all seven things he told me to study, and I think I was only able to play five or six out of the seven things he told me to do that week, he ended up telling me I played like Mickey Mouse LOL! So I told him I didn't want lessons anymore and my mom, God bless her, thought that that was it that she had wasted money on a guitar and then I just went through a few weeks stage. but it wasn't just a stage. I loved music and I was determined to learn guitar and I had a very good ear. So I stuck with it on my own and I'm still playing to this day. I know I'll only get out of this what I put into it. so I know the pentatonic scale which is probably the easiest scale, and I can move that around and find where I can use it in any key. but of course I want to continue to grow so I'll continue to watch your videos and continue to learn. But like you were saying, visualizing it and seeing it as opposed to just noodling around with it as a shape, are two different things. I should have memorized the fretboard a long time ago. But I'm memorizing it now! Then I will start going through all the different positions memorizing and seeing them. Thank you very much once again for responding and for doing what you do

I wish I could unlearn all the stupid patterns my guitar playing never really progressed that well until I started actually listening I learned more about guitar from my piano teacher than my guitar teacher.He thought me how to listen first, and technique second and you don't need to use every note I like using the 7 and sus and playing piano I learned a lot about voicings you can play crazy 9 and 6 chords that sound great because theyre not as condensed the notes aren't competing with each other arpeggios cause really a lot of these chords are closer to scales than chords that are too busy. Perfect pitch is the key. Thank Mike Little my piano teacher he changed my life musically. God bless yas
