I thought about Tempest, but sadly they only get "Call Lightning" for lightning spells. There's just a lot more options with Storm Sorcerer, even if it's not as melee suited.
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 My first thought was Tempest Cleric too...doing what you did and dumping wisdom and getting Lightning & Fighting prowess elsewhere arguably works better...interesting. Paladin/Sorcerer would be a similar option as well, Sorcadin is a known optimization venue.
Hear me out here... dont have high strength (dont dump it though) and instead go hexblade and put it all into charisma. So Thor originally had his powers taken away and only had his strength when wielding the hammer. A hexblade fits this perfectly, have the hammer be your pact weapon and then mix in the levels of storm sorcerer using booming blade instead of extra attack.
Honestly, just swap out a feat for War Caster. Booming Blade as a reaction when they try to move. They take the basic weapon attack damage, plus the extra thunder damage. PLUS they're already moving so they proc the second set of thunder damage. Definitely situational. But so much fun. Also, yeah. Going 7 levels of EK instead of the 6 from here can add even more usage of Booming Blade. Pretty much your choice of going a touch more martial, or getting that Sorcerer reaction damage.
@@TalesStahl You are talking about the age of Norse mythology or about the age of the Norse gods? If it's about the age of the Norse you can do a quick search and see that it has no more than 1225 years, if you are talking about the gods age, of course they are countless years old
@@mileslugo6430 because of Buffalo Bill, the big man Thor meets in space and is hostile in the beginning so Thor throws his hammer at him and bill catches it then uses it to beat up Thor
Would have thought Tempest Cleric + Barbarian would be best. Holiness, lightning damage added to your weapon, flight, control weather, and a couple of other lightning/thunder based buffs from Cleric, and Berserker Rage, tankiness while topless, Con Saves, etc from Barbarian.
Yeah, but the only real lightning spell tempest clerics get is call lightning. You'd be missing out on lightning bolt, shocking grasp, lightning lure etc
Thor wears armor and you can't cast or focus on spells while raging makes any barbarian caster combo basically worthless he's also a renowned and trained warrior not anger fueled. I get the conception he's a Norse god so he must be a barbarian but one it's insulting and misrepresentation mostly do to the popularity of berserkers which have been misinterpreted as drug crazed and were more like elite soldiers of jarls typically settling disputes on behalf of his jarl in ritual combat. his magic comes from himself and not belief in a god.
@@mattedmands2085 1) Technically you can, but don’t get the benefits. 2) That’s only heavy armour, not all armour. 3) He doesn’t always rage, he doesn’t always wear armour. 4) His power does come from a God, the one in the mirror.
@@PureGoldNeverCorrodes right his power comes from his bloodline thus sorc not cleric he's not praying to himself he's just doing it and a barbarian who isn't raging isn't a barbarian you are sacrificing too much for no gain and no flavor he combines magic and fighting prowess which he learned from his father himdall and Tyr. but if you really are set on making him a barbarian i would look more toward monk way of the four elements and some of the changes from tasha's or the upcoming ascended dragon or maybe a druid since he did technically draw his power from asgard.
Air Genasi could be a interesting alternate race for this build. As well, Storm Sorcerer/ Vengeance Paladin. To quote the PHB 'Vengeance Paladin, also sometimes called avengers or dark Knights'. Alternately Storm Herald Barbarian is another good choice.
After watching this earlier vid, I think it's really incredible how much your personal style and format has improved and refined over the years. I always look forward to your videos!
No real point going tempest cleric, since you're getting all you need from sorcerer and barbarian. Thor gets his power from himself, not from an outside deity like a cleric.
My only tweak for this would be swap out true strike for Catapult. It's an excellent spell that launches any object below five lbs within 60 feet of you 90 feet in a straight line. It also forces any victim to make a dex save or take 3d8 bludgeoning damage. This sounds incredibly useful for throwing Thor's hammer, and it would give the weapon pact more use!
This worked out really well. All the abilities covered, stats match character strengths and weaknesses ( Loki says, "Are you ever NOT going to fall for that?" and lots of options for melee nd thunder/lightning damage. You even map the character progress (not the god of hammers, as he initially thinks).
Now, just get the Hammer of Thunderbolts to have Mjolnir with extra lightning spells, Belt of Giant Strength for Thor's belt that increases his strength by a lot more and Gauntlets of Ogre Power and you can really roleplay as Thor.
The Mythical reference is so on point! I would point out though that in the Mythos Thor is so OP that when Uthgard-Loki (not that Loki, another Loki) challenged him to a "Prank Contest", he drunk half of the seas, lifted Miðgarðsormr (the Snakes that envelops the WORLD) and he fought the personification of OLD AGE ("which beats every warrior") and Uthgard-Loki was so scared he let Thor win.
I feel like Paladin would work for Thor also. It would synergize well with a sorcerer and he could easily take an oath like Oath of Glory, Oath of Devotion, Oath of the Crown, or even Oath of the Watchers. I feel like either oath of devotion or oath of the watchers would make the most sense for Thor though.
I built Thor as a Storm Cleric, it just felt more appropriate. You still get all the weapon and armor you could want, you can put him in plate, and stack his defense so he's hard to hit, you can have d8 for hit die so you dont have to worry about losing out on health from magic spells, and taking the highest con and tough feat can give you 7 hit points per level. I also talked to my DM about changing the channel divinity to something more Thor in character, since Clerics tend to get an ability worthy of a 3rd level spell slot, she agreed a 3rd level spell wouldn't be out of bounds for what a channel divinity can do, so Lightning Bolt became a twice per short rest channel divinity and felt very, very in character for Thor. I also managed to get a necklace of fireball, but asked if it could be reflavored to lightning bolt instead, they agreed. Allowing me to essentially wrap it around my hammer, and channel it as if it was my hammer casting the one time use lightning bolts. What they didn't expect, was that I would then use my second channel divinity to max out lightning damage. This lead to some rather epic moments of insane damage. Of course this required DM cooperation to reflavor, change damage types, spells, and while none of it made me any stronger than any other cleric, it definitely felt more thor like and made the game a much better experence for everyone involved.
I know this video has been out for awhile but thanks, I think you unintentionally solved my build trying to combine Hexblade, Echo Knight, and Shadow Sorcerer
This definitely got more onto this build than tempest cleric. But I do thing two levels into tempest cleric works well for your channel divinity to Max out thunder or lightning damage. As well as level 1 you can get that reaction lightning damage that you went to sorcerer 14 to. Maybe a bit less fighter to add cleric? I think it would really add to it!
@@hasthehighground8560 2 levels of Paladin for Divine Smite and then Storm Sorcerer and you use Booming Blade with a Warhammer and a shield, +2 from dueling fighting style. That's basically a really good Thor Build.
The Bifrost fight scene from Ragnarok brings to mind the storm herald barbarian path (specifically sea storm), where he is attacking physically and lightning is just arcing off of his body and striking his foes.
Like others, I argue towards tempest cleric with maybe a dip into barbarian; much more tankiness (which is a must for a god), more flavor because of class based weather effects and lightning blasts (also charged into a weapon), a flying speed at Lv 17 and divine magic instead of arcane.
I feel like pact of the blade is better for the magic seasoning for Thor. First it opens your martial subclass up as you don't need EK (I'd go champion or battle master as they are both on theme and help make his raw strength better) Second it offers Odin as a celestial patron (as his magic sealed the power to the hammer) or a flavor rework of the kraken (with gm approval) which is nice, though I'm going to be using a presumed kraken rework (Thor's godly essence is the "patron due to Odin's magic on mjolnir). 10 levels of warlock gets us 5th level spells, the most important patron feature, and access to the invocations needed. First at level 6 you get tentacles from the kraken that work as two extra slappers adding 1d4 bludgeon as an option as well as a charisma based grapple, these can be reflavored as lashes of lightning that strike like arms for the god of thunder. Then at level 10 you get resistance to lightning and thunder as well as ignoring difficult terrain. Next is the invocations, we get 5, two from the kraken and 3 base. Overcharged let's you ignore resistance and turns immunity into half damage. Then is Eldritch storm, which allows you to choose lightning or thunder damage instead of force and adds melee attack chance on 5ft for lightning and wanted things up for 120ft for thunder. Otherworldly leap let's you do the hammer spin jump by casting jump at will, Eldritch spear/ repelling blast as your Eldritch blast is important and can always use a buff. Thirsting blade makes your melee better by adding two attacks Everytime you use one attack action. So 10 champion fighter 10 kraken* bladelock, can't say how it'd fare comparatively but it removes the int casting while still trying to stay on character
I think hexblade warlock may be more powerful than eldritch knight. You still get cantrips and arguably more spell slots. You also get a better weapon bond and use charisma for the spells.
I get the choice of eldritch knight, but I would be more inclined to say battle master. Being able to sweep the leg and then zap, or disarm and then cast shatter. I think that would work, maybe, shatter can't be used on anything worn or carried. Then burst of thunder damage.
If we're going more accurate to Norse lore, Thor is in fact part-Giant. He was also a red-headed absolute unit. So Giant Soul Sorcerer from UA could work. And to my understanding, he was a brutal warrior who piously served Odin and took no prisoners. So Paladin/Sorcerer comes to mind. Maybe Crown or Conquest Paladin mixed with Giant Sorcerer (probably Storm Giant). Bug your DM to give you a Dwarven Thrower and you're good. Fits lore-wise as well.
I used a variation of this build for a game but instead of an Eldritch Knight I used Path of the Storm Herald Barb and Outlander background instead of Noble. And my dm let me mod the fallen Aasimar to do lightning and thunder instead of necrotic, and made resistant to thunder and lightning instead of radiant and necrotic. It was hella fun to play
I am building a Tempest Cleric / Storm Sorcerer at the moment. I kind of just started the first couple levels in Tempest Cleric for Destructive Wrath, then I’m planning on taking the rest Sorcerer. This is more for the max damage lightning or thunder spells than anything else. I *did* think of Thor once or twice, but I wasn’t really looking to copy him specifically. My character is a Tiefling and I plan to take the Infernal Constitution feat so that he will eventually be resistant to Fire, Cold, Poison, Thunder, *and* Lightning.
Also you don't really need intelligence. Just focus on abjuration spells. Since you never go above first level wizard spells, go with protection from evil and absorb elements to reveal your toughness and experience fighting other realms creatures. Until you get sorcerer 6 and fly, you don't have a lot of concentration spells so protection is a nice enhancement. I flavor shield being Thor spinning his hammer to block attacks. If you want earth tremor for the shock and awe of it (Even though you have thunderclap which does more damage at will) you can get it with your sorcerer levels and use the higher sorcerer DC instead. (Or don't take it. You later grab erupting earth which is superior version of the same effect, i.e. Thor smashing his hammer on the ground to blast multiple opponents. )
So what I did was make Thor a tempest cleric, for you see I am a strong believer of the "rule of fun". So I may have mix and matched the spells given to the subclass to fit Thor better. I then added rune knight and chose Goliath instead of aasimar. My reasoning was Thor is known as a giant slayer so reskin Goliath since the abilities are in character and the Goliath language since he hunts them. I also changed the fire chains from rune knight to lightning.
Episodes 8 and 9 of the Fire Emblem stats: Luigi and Thor. First, the skinny Mario Bro. Luigi has a pretty basic build of being strong in brawling and reason. He doesn't have much in the way of weakness besides authority since he's always second fiddle. Based on the Mario and Luigi series, Luigi tends to be the tank between the two brothers, and that will be reflected here. Next, the god of thunder. Thor's best weapons are axes (both of his weapons count as axes here) and reason for all that lightning. His budding talent is in authority because he eventually works up to being Asgard's ruler. His weakness is in heavy armor because that conducts electricity. His magic, strength, and HP are great but he has bad resistance.
Honestly replacing the fighter levels with levels in Valour or Swords bard might be better, more spells and you don’t have to worry about intelligence. You also get the benefit of more skills and expertise.
im planning out my own thor inspired character as a dwarf storm cleric. I know that Thor is never depicted as dwarf-like, but the dwarf race gives my character access to a dwarven thrower. Hammer of thunderbolts is another Mjolnir-like weapon, but that requires gauntlets of ogre power and a belt of giant strength to use to its full potential.
Hexblade warlock pact of the blade (his powers comes from Mjölnir in the comics) and maybe a few levels fo fighter for extra ASIs and feats. I'd go Hexblade 12/Fighter 8. Champion is the obvious choice since Thor was the god of warriors and battle as opposed to being a god of warfare or strategy.
I built him as a Tempest Cleric with a Returning Light Hammer (Mjolnir) and a Battleaxe (Stormbringer). All of my cleric spells are either Thunder/Lightning themed damage spells or buffs, I also included healing word as he can inspire others to carry on a bit longer when he chooses his words well. We're only second level and I'm figuring it out as we go so that's all I've got so far and the hammer isn't returning yet, but as soon as we are acquiring appropriately leveled loot for that my DM will allow us to find one. Not sure if I'll take some ideas from this video going forward or if I'll try something different.
Great build mate!! I am very keen to use it in the next campaign we play. I was hoping to ask a few questions. Is there anything you'd change to optimise the build for play? Is there a way to lean more heavily towards one caster type (ie INT or otherwise) without sacrificing too much? Do you think using stat boosts instead of elemental dept feats would take too much damage away from the lightning spells? Thanks!
Unnnnnh I'm so torn between Black Widow and the Hulk.... Can you do both? Eventually? Please? I guess if I haaaad to choose, it would be for my girl, Black Widow. Gimme that OP Shocking Grasp.
Hmm, nah the way I'd do it would be Storm Sorcerer 17, Hexblade Warlock 1, Tempest Cleric 2 Storm Sorcerer now gets 9th level spells so I'm not dying inside Hexblade Warlock gets you a special weapon intrinsically bonded to you (Though you can't summon it, could trade the Tempest levels for Warlock levels if you wanted) Tempest Cleric for that sweet sweet channel divinity and heavy armour
You can get Hammer of Thunderbolts, Gauntlets of Ogre Power, and a Belt of Giant Strength for a 30 Strength. That means you'll probably be using a maul rather than a warhammer though.
The Luigi video doesn’t allow comments, so I’ll double comment here. It tickles me that the Luigi build not only came before Mario, but nearly 80 episodes earlier. #DecemberTulokRewatch
You seem to have forgotten both booming blade (booming hammer) and lightning lure. 3d8 thunder (+ weapon damage) or lightning damage (and a pull effect) at will should be worth something, No? Eldritch knight 7 to still get both attacks. Also gust of wind or dust devil for storm effects and stuff Thor has done in the comics anyway.
So many people are saying that Thor should be a tempest cleric. The thing that people are forgetting in the comment is that he gets his powers from his parents, he's a god because he was born from 2 gods so sorcerer makes sense.
Lol! Well for some reason my first thought was Axel, so nah not too bad. I might not have even though of that if I wasn't wonderign about this month's KH character.
Was thinking of making a Mountain Dwarf Fighter/Sorc using EK and DB. Same playstyle, just replace God of Thunder for Short Angry Flaming Golden Dragon Man
