Thank you sir. Been playing metal and hip hop for 10 years, set the chops down and ready for the real drumming to begin. Great explanation!

It seems like an important trick is to keep the thumb vertically/parallel to the stick at all times. My hand/stick resting position is not like that. (Bad habit of an old dog). I'll keep working to change this.

That sounds great to me! Keep up the good work :)

Great video. Ryan, excellent explication. One question. What would be the routine to practice? Per day what would be the range of bpm to practice and how many time practice it to up of bpm? Many thanks and regards from México.

Hi Eric, thanks for watching! Just focus on the technique and when you feel comfortable up the tempo by 3-5bpm. The goal tempo should be a the bpm of a song that you currently play or are going to play/perform.

Скажите, а почему тарелки не прикручены гайками на креплении? Это так надо для лучшего звукоизвлечения?

I don’t have the cymbals felts/wing nuts on so that it is easy to change cymbals, hope this helps!

Thanks for the lesson. Is there any advantage to throw catch over push pull for jazz ride? You noted the similiarity, just wondering which to focus on. Also, at lower speeds, are you still mostly using fingers with rebound or do you use contolled wrist? Thanks.

Hi Michael, thanks for checking it out! For me, the only difference is throw and catch I use for three notes at a time, where as push pull, in my experience, is usually two notes (up down etc) and for 16th funk or contemporary playing. I tend to use throw and catch for most tempos unless it’s very slow i.e. ballad tempo. Then I will use wrist. Hope this helps.

@@BetterDrumming Thanks Ryan. Referencing your finger stroke video, is there any reason why you wouldn't use the finger stroke (given it also allows speed) for for the ride pattern (with the finger stroke I guess articulating each hit)? Thanks again.
@BetterDrumming
@BetterDrumming 2 года назад
Great question. At slow tempos I.e. 80bpm or lower, I use wrist strokes for each note of the ride cymbal pattern. Other than that I use the throw catch for faster tempos. The fingers don’t play all the strokes for me, I use wrist, bounce, and finger snap for the ride cymbal pattern. Hope this helps.

@@BetterDrumming Thanks Ryan. Sorry to keep the questions coming. What circumstances do you use the finger stroke techinque (from your video) vs wrist, throw catch or push pull (looking beyond the ride pattern). Thanks again.

No problems! Ask away :) I use throw catch for medium-fast swing. Wrist and push pull for groove playing. Something like a bossa nova I would play all wrist. These just work for me but have an experiment with the different techniques in different situations and find what works for you :)

Hello Ryan, I am not sure how to approach your snare/kick at 12-14 sec, how do you think it please?

Thanks Buddy Chris! For that phrase I am playing K L L K as a four note phrase (kick, snare, snare, kick). E.g. KLLKKLLKKLLKKLLK hope this helps!

When you faster do you slight change the angle at which the hit the cymbal. I notice my hand goes from play the middle to a little more to the right side of the cymbal
@BetterDrumming
@BetterDrumming 3 года назад
I personally find the angle doesn’t change too much, you can add in a bit of moellar to the stroke which will result in the motion moving towards the right hand side of the cymbal. Hope this helps!
@zebrunoeisenberg8465
@zebrunoeisenberg8465 2 года назад
Thanks man!!Important question for me and possibly others: when you do close your fingers movement, does the butt part of the drumstick stays resting in the left bottom part of you palm (the little pillow) or it should pass freely away from it? I'm bringing there every time I close the fingers and it seems like is restricting the whole 3note movement.
@BetterDrumming
@BetterDrumming 2 года назад
Thanks! Great question! It should be still a relaxed movement even though you are snapping the fingers on the ‘catch’ motion. You might be restricting the stroke if you clench too hard, as the stick will get trapped momentarily in the hand. Try snapping, but only as far as you need to get the 3rd stroke out, and stay relaxed. Hope this helps!
