Nice vid, thanks! As an LP user, however, I am a bit surprised how general your approach towards 'funny rubbers' was. One of the first thing they teach for an LP (modern) defender is how to play push-to-push with long pips and how to create backspin in your own shot, which is much more difficult than create a dead ball instead. The difference in the two is the amount of brush by increasing acceleration of the wrist and amplitude of the total swing. And you need soft bendy pips on a soft-ish sponge. But then the magic happens: suddenly there is no spin reversal that is commanded by your opponent, but only spin reversal that you yourself may choose to create or not. Similarly, you control the amount of reversal on your chop, as well as the block. Players like Masato Shiono were experts at this. So I suggest you create a 'Part 2' follow up now :)
MY GOD. I thought I was the only one to realize that you could create topspin/underspin/no spin with LP when your opponent gives you underspin. Don't know it is common knowledge. [sosad][sosad][sosad][sosad]. BTW, besides the two factors (the amount of brush and amplitude of the swing), I find that the angle of the blade makes a difference as well.
@@egghead1969 a chopper was telling me that to create backspin with Pips on chops you actually use the side of the pimple (hence the need for soft bendy pips) which is where the grip is (side of the pimple rather than the top) he was2600 chopper btw
@@egghead1969 Absolutely! The 'brush' term is an umbrella cover - it includes the angle of the blade. If the ball enters the rubber at the wrong (read 'direct') angle, the won't be any brush and won't be any own imparted spin. There is a Japanese class on this topic with Shiono here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3SbO5I2bYLs.html Even if you don't speak Japanese (I don't!!) it's quite clear what they are explaining there.
@@PechPongTT True, like LP's chop blocking. It also creates the ball wobbliness because of the pip bending and straightening movements. As @assa1975 mentioned, it is all on the brush and swing. BTW, very great video. thanks. 👍👍
By far the best video on the internet for pips and anti. The detailed analysis of all kinds of shots is a one that I have never heard from anyone. I am a grass player for almost 10 years now and I am really happy that I got to learn new things about how to play with this rubber. No coach of mine has given me this level of detailed analysis that you have given me. Thank You so much!!
This is THE BEST video on this subject I have ever watched. A steady paced explanation that covers all the points. I am just starting to learn to play using long pips and really appreciate the full spectrum coverage of all the ideas. Thank you. (and thank your dad!)
Best tt video on long pips and anti. The best advice is being PATIENCE, playing against pips and anti tends to drive one crazy, it should be banned for health reasons.
25 minutes of a Pech Pong video is like attending a Masterclass on Table Tennis with some Star Wars cutscenes thrown in :D One of the few channels on RU-vid that provides such deep insight on gameplay and strategy. The inclusion of a 'Long Pips' player strategy (Thanks to your Dad) makes this video even more compelling as it always helps to understand the strategic game play of a LP player as in a competition, they are not going to keep on letting you play your push & loops until you win your point.
Great video as always. These are solid tips and I'm hoping I can apply them next time I play a pips or an anti player. When I first started playing against them, I hated it because I didn't understand the ball. Nowadays, I've grown to love playing against them because it disciplines my mind to actually watch the ball and the spin on it and not to just instinctually swing at it. And playing against them has actually improved my game against inverted players to when it comes to reading spin on serves.😊
That’s the spirit! I like playing them to because of the exact reasons you mentioned being able to change my patterns on the fly makes me a better player :)
Thanks for this video. I started using long pips and anti 35 years ago, after my first of 2 hip replacements when I was 40 years old. Going to the "Dark Side" allowed me to keep playing after I lost a lot of my mobility.
For anyone watching this video, it is nicely done as it explains the BASICS on how to play with both types of rubbers ! Dead on the spot. I was an inverted player that after a bike accident had to switch to Medium pimples. I became an Anti player and shown how to play with an Anti master ! So ... just to add, all the mistakes usually made by both players have been highlighted ! But this is just the beginning. Two other technically hard strokes to be made by each type of player are: by the anti: - create a flat kill with the anti (not swipe as this is super hard). The flat kill is almost like an BH inverted flip, but needs lots of practice and a soft Anti top sheet. Basically if you have a hard top you are just doing spin reversal, with a soft top you can alternate both. It's like magic and not really known by most Anti players. by the inverted player: - push long&higher than usual "no-spin balls" to the BH of the anti (details on how to execute this shot are not easy to describe but better viewed). Normally older players are not able to pivot to kill and it's very hard from them to judge on much timing they need to go around the ball. These balls are not easy to flat kill because they are dead with no spin!! The result is sometimes a bad push which will give you an attack ball. Overall well done and I know how hard it is to explain all those shots. You have also nailed it on the topic of "using your brain" ... I find it silly when players say that this is not "table tennis" - when it's EXACTLY what it is !!! I find it ironic that in Tennis when someone created a racket which created more spin on the ball which could not be controlled, they made it illegal, hahahaha Kudos to you and your dad to come up with this video ! If your father is interested I can send him a video of how my racket top sheet looks like. BTW I restarted to play with medium pimples as they have created really nice ones these days. Ooops forgot to add... the Starwars clips are PRICELESS !!!!
I appreciate the time planning and work you have put in to make a truly great video on long pips and anti. And thank your Dad too! Watched a few times and made notes, hopefully now I can improve my results against the dark side of TT. 🙂Cheers
Awesome video, I have to commend the quality you put into these! The editing is top notch and your work is noticed. For me the biggest learning was, when I had the chance to play against anti/pimples for a longer time in a couple training sessions. In beginner/amateur level table tennis, their biggest advantage is the rarity. You played for a couple of years against inverted rubber and learned the spin, suddenly everything you learned is different, if not the complete opposite. That's very frustrating and hard to think yourself out of. So getting real life experience against this style of rubber is fundamental. The experience combined with your tips and explanations here, should get anyone ready for the next game. It can actually become fun, to play against them. As an attacker, is kinda playing cat and mouse. You wait for your trap to catch them and then you finish it.
Great video. The lack of really good quality anti/long pip training vids on RU-vid coming out of The USA is certainly lacking to say the least. Perhaps it’s time (hint hint) for your dad to start putting up some content. Long Pip players are starving for content. The two of you could even team up. Just imagine the videos from the two opposing perspectives. It’s pure gold I tell ya. You’re welcome. 😊
Great video. I am a medium pips player from Brazil and also coach a team here and your video is going to help me and my club members too much. I used to watch your previous video because it's much complete and has a lot of information but this video is in a completely new level. Congratulations!!! Thank you very very much
Finally! A clear explanation for both inverted players and LP players. As an LP player, I'll take your last quote to explain to my opponent when they growl again..."You have to think a lot". 😉 Thanks!
Thank you so much! Awesome video! Great tips! I‘d like to learn more about LP/Anti tactics. Maybe you can share a video in the future on how to set up a game as LP/Anti and some more detailed stroke techniques from your dad.
I think another problem is more conventional players don't respect it, which leads them to underestimate / take the game less seriously. Great tutorial!
Fantastic video! And good job on all the great clips you chose to demonstrate the techniques and game situations. It's good to see players of the highest caliber showcased in these scenarios and it couldn't have been easy to find all these, so kudos to you! I think it would be great if you expanded the video (or I guess part 2) to include long pip choppers.
Great video, Seth! I use pips myself so I'm not sure I like you giving away all my secrets!! Please, folks, keep serving short sidespin to my backhand!! Don't listen to Seth....
Hello, I love so much your videos, it's so usefull for a young player like me who need experience and need to understand before to practice A big thanks from France 😊
Great information, Seth. Zhou Xintong uses LP beautifully. She retired from the Chinese team in 2018, I believe. She uses LP (Dawei 388d1 .05 sponge) like an inverted. I play cpen with inverted on FH and LP on BH (twiddle). Backspin is what I like to receive because you can punch it pretty hard with LP. What I hate to receive is fast, no spin serves. If I am not aware and absorb some of the power, the ball will fly off the table or to the net. I use LP because I'm way slower and older today.
This video was amazing, agree with all the messages here. Also extra note, this was your funniest videos for me, loved all the Star Wars meme clips! :)
Thanks a lot! Although is a lot information, I will need to review it several times, because I am thinking to change to long pips. Greetings from Perú.
Hi Seth! Great video. As a LP player I approve this message 😂 One thing I will add is that as a LP player I love to get into longer rallies with my opponent. Reason is because unless they are solid consistent player, it increases their probability to make more errors. But great pointers. Thanks
Chinese penhold traditional backhand chop blockers that can loop with LP are very tough to play against. I agree, pips do have a space on tt, it makes it entertaining to see the different variations of playing styles.
Hi. All your videos are just great and this video is even greater. It covers all we need to know and is explained in such a nice and understandable way. Great work, go on, thank you so much. Your videos lift up my game
Thank you very much for answering my inquiries before on how to play with pips!!! I really appreciate it!!! You hit awesome tips!!! I will work on your advice!!! Thanks for all your awesome advice!!! God Bless!!!
Thank you so much for this! I get so mad playing my friend who uses what I call a "playschool" paddle. It's literally a plastic paddle from walmart. I'm a much better player, but I get so apprehensive playing him because I can't predict anything. As an aggressive player, it really sucks to take safe shot after safe shot and just waiting for him to make a mistake. Looking forward to using these tips to find some consistency and a way to control the game again.
Great video as always Seth - I always think about those star wars references when playing against long pips so it was hilarious to see you use them in this video. 😂 Dan
@@PechPongTT Everyone at my club always complains about these rubbers, saying these players should be outlawed! Don't get me wrong, I had my moments early on and certainly don't play great against these, but I agree with you that it's a great way to broaden the complexity of the sport. Sure, it can be frustrating, but if we had more players with these rubbers we would all be more used to it. We have have one player that attacks with long-pips - full topspin loop against underpin - devastating and amazing shot!
Your explanation is for Anti and Long pips OX (without sponge) if you put a sponge on the Long pips it's a different story (especially ticker sponge 1mm or more). Thanks.
Nice content!! Thanks a lot for the robot video that I also requested. I was busy with my university and just realized you did that video!! Thanks man! 👌👌👌👌👊👊👊
Thanks for the great vid ! Watching it is very helpful but now I feel the need to complete my understanding with how short pips behave. Also in a league match I'm never sure if my opponent is using short or long pips (but even if they tell me I'm not 100% sure on the difference)
Guys, don't listen to Seth, we pimples player hate when you serve short to the middle. And please, no spinny sidespin serves to the pimples :) Joking aside this video had some great tips and many common mistakes offensive players make that we take advantage of. Another tip if you are often looping out on anti or pimples pushes is to just wait longer before starting the stroke, this helps you adjust to the ball. Great video and selection of match clips!
Awesome Seth. Amazing depth and great insights. May be if you think of a follow up then you can talk about two different anti playing styles. One which sticks close to the table and sends the ball fast and low. Ex: Manika batra and the second style would be more classical defense chopper style. How to strategize against these styles. Also, (sorry i am being greedy) what do I get back if long pips side swipes the ball? So essentially the question would be how to attack a skidding long deep push vs a heavy backspin one.
Great video Seth!! I find anti particularly difficult against the Seemiller style where the opponent primarily blocks with regular rubber then randomly (or maybe strategically?) throws in one or two anti shots. It's so disruptive and easy to mess up, but I have some better ideas on how to handle those shots! Thanks for all your hard work man!
Haha that third star wars scene was perfect, so accurate :D haha and the 5th :D the biggest problem for me is not that i dont know how i have to play but rather the muscle memorie i have to surpress and overcome. The sport is so fast that i often cant handle to calculate the spin properly and then correctly adapt my kinetic chain in time. Its also the footwork with changes in pace and so on. And a lot of my strengh comes from very good, spinny and creative serves but most of them are useless against anti/SP player which at the same time make the game boring for me.
A great video, please take it offline 😛 a pips player 😛. No just kidding, loved it, good understanding of playing with pips/anti and against them. I always love the rallies with players who just start using more and more spin (top and side). Some of them still don't know or cannot handle what they get back... and most of them then avoid the bh, but my fh is my real power. I my experience some of the best and long rallies are between long pips and very offensive topspin players. By the way, did you know that in the history of tabletennis, first there were no rubbers and then became the short pips.... later on inverted rubbers were invented... so for all pip haters.... pips were first!
hahaha freaking love the Starwars Refrence Anti/Longpimps as the DARKSIDE of the force xD Best tip I've gotten is. THINK OF HAPPY GILMORE!! Just tap it in xD Most Longpimps don't do something themself. Just take it slow and hit the table and w8 for the right ball to KILL
Yeah I hated playing against pips and Anti for a long time even though I did play Anti for about 4 years myself ^^V Nowadays I am kinda happy as "most" people especially in the lover classes only use either of it because they need something to cover for their bad technique on their (mostly) backhand. That loop and push changing back and forth is probably the easiest way but for a while now I usually don't stop attacking with topspin at all .... usually the ball looses enough spin so that you can attack again if you actually do a "high" topspin and not the super flat fast ones. My main Problem is if someone either by accident or because he knows what he is doing, switches between "spin reversal" and "removing spin"
i'm quite used to play against older people with processed long pips (really big long pips), i guess just dont do sidespin serve or shot, cause when it hits long pips and return to us, it'll be hard to read the spin 😅
I like your videos very much and I learn a lot watching them. However, wouldn’t it have been more beneficial if you could kindly introduce each style separately. I got a little confused!
Long pimples have less spin, and react to spin less, short pimples are closer to regular rubber but again do not react to spin as much as regular rubber. I should make a video about short pimples
Hey Pech! I see you have a straight handle (Not FL) can you please go into the details why you are using such, cuz myself as a 99kg 184cm player, with big hands, I bought heavy FL setup and it feels very uncomfortable to me due to weight and a grip. Thank you so much!
First video about long pips where is the truth. I think because the author has the experience of playing with his Dad. I play long pips OX and I definitely agree with all facts and recomandation. Tnx!
It would help on the videos if the anti or longpips player is always the same color uniform. Many times I was not sure who had what and especially if they have spinny one side and anti the other.
Out of the 50 odd players in our club about 15 are pips, anti ,long, medium, tacky short pips whatever you want to call it ( They call themselves the Dark side 😅). I have been playing with them for the last 6 years. Because everyone is used to their game ,none, not a single one has ever reached the knockout stages of the class A tournaments. Now. People send their young ,10-15 year olds to our club just for exposure to these rubbers. No disrespect, not easy to play against them when you are a beginner or intermediate level player. But frankly they feed on people who have little experience against such rubbers. Hence no anti or pips in top 25 professional players for quite a while. Plastic ball is another problem.
Great video, because of this I already beat this season long pips player and anti player that I would have probably lost to otherwise. But I have question, can you make something similar for short pips? I play this offensive guy in our club and it's always I hit one good shot and the next one goes to the net. It confuses me that he made same movement and I have to play something different.
I use long pips and I would never never never let my opponent handle and rub a ball on my pips. This is my pet hate. They can look but don't touch. I am happy to give all the info that I know about my pips and sponge but keep your grubby hands off my pips. You can inspect them by looking but rubbing the pips can damage them. Yes I am grumpy about this.
A thousand times this. If a player rubs their fingers on my LP rubber I should be able to wipe my sweaty/greasy fingers on their inverted. I don't because my momma raised me right. Just common courtesy applies.
Politicians, Lawyers and Junk Rubber Players.... Same DNA! Having said that your explanations were very good. In my experience I have seen way too many 1300-1600 level players choose this because they can beat higher players and 'claim' that they are that good. When in fact all they really have is decent hand-eye coordination. In the general 'club' level groups with lowish levels the pips are a crutch, not a development of personal skills. They should be gone from this sport. They limit an average persons ability to actually gain greater skill unless they play regularly. There is a reason that there are very few junk rubber players at world class levels..... because they will usually only go so far where as the lower player sees a marked increase in there points won without having the skills to match. that is not to say they cannot gain skill.... but competition should be my skill against yours.... not "Dr. Newbaur's!" .... Note: had a guy in a club that I used to go to. He played the whole table if he could with the long wiggly pips, When I told him that he was no better than maybe 1300, he was pissed. So the challenge was made that he play with inverted. Now I could beat the pips but it took way too much patience and thought but in general he probably took more games due to my blatant disdain for junk rubber players in general (not the person, just there competitive choices, because let's face reality. They come to the table with whatever skill they have plus more) and my lack of patience with them. So he played me with inverted. In about 6 games I don't think he got more than 10-15 points! He was so mad he did not come back for awhile.
@@PechPongTT If you did not catch it... I loved your explanation as well. If I were younger or my bones were not so arthritic I would probably take the time to "re-prepare" myself using your tactical expertise on the matter. However, tournaments for me are a thing of the past. I hope many inverted players get to see this video. especially the younger ones that go to tournaments and/or are trying to advance their skills in the good spirit of true competition. Good work.
