How To Plug A Tire and Check For Leaks - EricTheCarGuy
www.ericthecarguy.com/
Hello again, I hope you enjoy this latest offering. I'm sure there will be those that disagree with this practice but thats OK, I feel there are times when it can be done and save a bunch of work resealing a tire. This also shows my preferred method of checking for leaks which I hope you benefit from.
Don't forget I have a second channel now ETCG1, stop by and check it out you might like it.

Eric, I had to repair a tire once when my wife and I miles away from anything. I repaired it on the car and I, by myself, could NOT get the plug into the tire. After what seemed an hour of pushing with all I had I came up with the idea of turning the tire around until the Plug tool was on the bottom of the tire. I lowered the car (slowly and carefully) and the weight of the car pushed the Plug right in. I jacked the car back up ..... removed the tool and we drove home. I felt so Proud and my wife was really impressed. Talk about a 'Work Around' .
@jeffreybuckmaster4600

Glad I read that before I removed the tire. I just jacked mine up, removed the screw, put a little rubber cement on the plug, then lowered the car, with the parking brake on, down on to the plug. Using the weight of the car was genius! Thx for your comment!

Frank H next time use rubber cement. Otherwise u need arms like hulk to get it in, specially if you don't us the reamer correctly like in this video.

Now that's a good idea. I'll be sure to keep that in mind for if I come to a sticky situation in future. I'll be sure to give the random youtube commenter credit for the idea, unless I have a pretty girl in the car - Then I'm pretending it was my idea :D

Bad repair job, NEVER put any kind of cement or lubricant on a plug, they are already lubricated and glued when you remove them from the package. As far as I know there is only one kind of plug that is not pre glued and I assure you that you don't have access to it as it's for professional use only.
@exil3dlivecom
@exil3dlivecom 5 лет назад
Mike K disagree, rubber cement not only makes it easier to push in, but reacts with the plug to seal fully. I got this from pros across the industry.

Thanks for the instructive video Eric...I recently purchased a portable DC air compressor, and a tire plug kit to fix any flats I get while out on the road. I logged onto RU-vid to learn how to properly plug a tire, and your helpful video has given me the confidence to do just that. Thanks for posting this video!

*remembers back to when he was a teen* I used to plug holes of any size in my ATC's (Trikes for those who don't know) with rope plugs. It was laughable sometimes how many plugs I had in a tire.. I remember having 13 of them in one hole! Since those days are long gone, I still keep plugs in my car with the proper awl and setting tool! And as always @Eric TheCarGuy excellent video!

@jermainehoust You don't need to apply rubber cement to the type of plugs that I use as they already have sealing material embedded in them. Thanks for the comment and for your input.

@robsz1 In the future you can also use a drill to make the hole larger to accommodate the plug as it can be easier than using a hammer. Thanks for your comment.

@ankl3br3ak3r I agree, that is why I said to wait a few minutes before checking it, that way you know it is a leak that's making the bubbles and not the application. Thanks for weighing in.

@chillincruisin You can do the same thing with low profile tires, any damage to the rim under where the tire is would be minimal and never seen. I would suggest however if it is a true performance application that you remove the tire and patch it instead to installing a plug.

@jayfiver The spinning at different speeds is crap however it might pull to one side if it is only one front tire that is replaced. I recommend replacing tires in pairs but if you are in a bind then you can just replace one, I recommend a tire of the same type and make as the others however.

@DiarmaidGNR I guess if it works but I'm sure there are many that would not recommend that but rather recommend using a patch on the inside of the tire.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 13 лет назад
@man1d2tran I knew a guy that was removing a tire from the rim that had sealant in it, the tire exploded as the tire machine made a spark when it came in contact with one of the steal belts, he's messed up for life because of it. This is the reason you have to put that sticker on the tire they give you with the can when you use it as a lot of people have been hurt by it. It also screws up the balance of the tire as you can never balance a tire with stop leak in it.
@ericthecarguy

@Jeffmtbr No, my girth is more than enough to get it in there, I have had some issues in the past that's why there are dents on my tools from hammering them in on difficult tires.

Many car repair guys don't worry about being a little crooked! ;) I'm glad you do care! Thanks for showing that you can plug the tire while the tire is under pressure. Some of the other RU-vid videos only show the tire patched while already deflated.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 14 лет назад
@EnzoElite You can remove the tire without the proper equipment but it is more trouble than it is worth. In addition it will still need to be balanced and there is no way around using equipment to do that.

@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 13 лет назад
@LiLTMac123 Some of the guys I used to work with used drills for that all the time and didn't have a problem. Just keep in mind most tire manufacturers would rather you removed the tire and patched it from the inside especially with a performance tire, just an FYI.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 14 лет назад
@jorgevrod I'm of the opinion that tires are the most important part of the car. I recommend getting 2 new tires to match and if you have aluminum rims make sure they clean them before installing the new tires or else you will have a leak.

@trodengore Honestly I've never seen or heard of that happening, if it did I would say that perhaps it was never installed correctly in the first place. I did mention in the video however that the best method is to patch a tire as that is what most tire manufacturers recommend. Thanks for your input
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 13 лет назад
@steveypeavey I'm referring to removing the corrosion buildup on the inside of the rim, I don't think hitting the tire is going to do much to solve that personally at least I haven't seen it.

@nobleheight I would say the problem is specific to your situation since in all the years I've worked on Honda's I've only replaced one brake booster that was damaged in a collision, I'm not saying they don't go bad I just haven't seen it at the same frequency as you. Perhaps you should watch the video I did on taking care of a spongy brake pedal as I find this problem to be much more common on Honda brake systems after a repair.

Nice video. I would avoid using silicone spray on the awl, though. While I don't know specifically if it will affect tire cement, I have seen silicone spray and other silicone products prevent other adhesives from bonding properly.

@sbab83 To be honest I don't know too many techs that do clean the wheels when doing tires. If the rims are too bad they will need to be sealed with tire sealant which makes a big mess but will seal it in the end. The tire does not need to be removed from the rim just broken down to apply the sealant.

Well done! On one of my cars my tires are getting close to needing to be replaced anyways and I just got a nail it. I had my other car with newer tires patched the "proper" way at a tire shop but I did not want to spend even more money on my old tires knowing I will have to buy a new set soon. I just need to get the car back on the road so I can go to work and get the money to buy a new set. My tire plug set came with some rubber cement. I used that with this plug and my tire is now fixed. Thanks!

@Michiganborn1969 Using a drill to set the hole is a perfectly acceptable method, I've seen it done with great success. For the most part I think plugs are just fine but I know of several tire manufacturers that would disagree with this practice as it can compromise the structural integrity of the tire.

Great video, it's so easy to do but a lot of people don't know how. Great skill to have. Couple of things to add- 1. I use wire cutters to cut the excess plug off. Its easier to use wire cutters and a lot safer. 2. After plugging the tire and cutting off the excess plug, I always apply the rubber cement that comes with some of the kits. It might not even really do anything but I always do it. It can't hurt so if it canes with your kit then use it. 3. The reamer tool is used to clean the hole and prep it so that the plug gets a good seal so I would advise against using a lubricant to help get it into the hole. Yes I know, it can be difficult to insert it without the help of a lubricant but just put your muscles on and jam it in there. You don't want to get it all done and then realize that the plug is leaking.

It depends on the plug you get. There are some plugs made these days to melt and conform to the tire after a drive. Also there are some plugs that have a backing to it when you pull it, the backing will open up on the other side of the tire sort of like a patch
