If you ever wanted to poach eggs but don't know how to do it, this video is for you. All you need is some water, vinegar and an egg and by the end of the video you will be able to make a poached egg.
Ingredients:
1 fresh egg
1-2 tablespoons of white vinegar (distilled vinegar)
Water
Salt and pepper (optional)
Equipment:
A small saucepan or deep skillet
A slotted spoon
A timer
A bowl of ice water (optional)
Instructions:
Prepare a small saucepan or deep skillet: Fill the saucepan or skillet with about 2-3 inches of water. Place it on the stove and bring the water to a gentle simmer over medium heat. You want the water to be hot but not boiling.
Add vinegar: Add 1-2 tablespoons of white vinegar to the simmering water. The vinegar helps coagulate the egg whites faster, resulting in a neater poached egg.
Crack the egg: Crack a fresh egg into a small bowl or ramekin. Be careful not to break the yolk.
Create a whirlpool: Use a spoon to stir the simmering water gently, creating a gentle whirlpool in the center of the pot. This swirling motion will help the egg white wrap around the yolk neatly.
Poach the egg: Carefully slide the cracked egg into the center of the swirling water. The swirling water will help the egg white envelop the yolk. You can use a spoon to gently nudge any errant egg white strands toward the egg.
Set a timer: Poach the egg for about 3-4 minutes for a runny yolk or longer if you prefer it more well-done. Use a timer to keep track of the cooking time.
Remove the egg: After the desired time, use a slotted spoon to carefully lift the poached egg out of the water. Allow excess water to drain off by gently tipping the spoon.
Optional ice bath: If you want to stop the cooking process and cool the egg quickly, you can transfer it to a bowl of ice water for a few seconds. This step is optional.
Season and serve: Place the poached egg on a plate and season with salt and pepper if desired. You can serve it on its own, over toast, on a bed of spinach, or with your favorite sauce, like hollandaise.
