I learned so much from this tutorial, and now you get to learn with me! It was truly quite fun and I was easily able to get the hang of it and take out all of those carwash swirls! I had never even held a buffer before this day. After this few hours of work I felt confident in my skills, the tools and the products to be able to tackle the rest of our fleet. Thank you to the entire DIY detail crew for having us and Yvan for the excellent teaching!

Excellent teaching practices, Yvan! A great teacher makes sure that they give the student the tools to be successful from the start. The fact that Emily (a fantastic student, by the way!) was already enjoying the satisfaction of learning and making major improvement before the lesson was even over... that level of teaching requires such deep knowledge of the field that you could relate it to just about anyone with any background, and guide them to proficiency in a such a way that they'll never doubt their ability to master the skill with practice. Instilling that kind of confidence so quickly is what every teacher should strive for, and you do it as well as anyone I've ever seen. Kudos to both of you, and thank you for setting the bar so high for quality detailing content on RU-vid.

Very good video. I picked up a lot of tips. I like Emilys enthusiasm for the job. One major issue I would like to pick up on. Emilys instructor should have stressed to her to tie her long hair up. In a workshop especially around rotary equipment long hair is a safety hazard. You dont get a second chance. I learned that from Tech school back in the seventies. We were made to wear a hair net in trade classes. Either that or get our hair cut. Took us guys a while to get used to the hair net but that was better than getting your hair caught in a machine and getting scalped. The thought sends shivers down my spine. Keep the good work up. Also wear some eye protection too. Some of that car polish flicked in the eyes not good. I hope i don't sound too much of a grouch. Take care and keep polishin.
@diydetailofficial

Thank you, having no hair myself it’s not something I think about. For the eye protection, agreed. One advantage of The Gold Standard Polishing System is that we have zero sling nor dust.

Or tuck it in the back of your overalls. I used to have long hair in the 80s when I started in a body shop using angle grinders and rotaries.. I learnt after a very close incident.. Props for pointing it out.

I've had my fair share of challenges with the rotary becuase " I" was Polishing AND NOT letting the machine do the work. I'm gona go home today and but out my Milwaukee Rotary and practice what I just saw. Thank you Soo Much for putting out this content... As a Detailer I REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!! 👍🏽🙏🏽

I have recently bought a slightly older Jeep Wrangler. I enjoy washing my car myself and do so once every week to every other week depending. I noticed in the hot southern heat my water spots would not go away on my black fenders. I’ve never used a polisher before and this video is the first I watched to learn technique. I enjoyed it so much that I have binge watched almost all of your other videos and it has completely opened my eyes about detailing a vehicle. Your videos, being the first I watched, made me watch some of your “competitors” processes and comparable products. But none of the other RU-vid videos I’ve watched compare to the quality of information y’all are putting out about your products, your process and technique. I rarely, if ever comment on anything, but wanted to give credit where credit was do, and you and your team are putting out incredibly useful information!

I have watched so many "Tutorials"!!! on polishing and they all say a beginner has to use a DA. My wax supplier here in Glasgow always tells me that his Rotary is his go to tool for polishing and I tell him I am a total novice so I tell him it is a DA for me. Maybe I should listen to him and try a Rotary. Sometimes I think detailers on RU-vid try to scare us so that no more detailers go down the route of polishing and steal work away from them. This was the best Tutorial on polishing I have ever watched. Thanks again.

I’ve been trying to master my rotary, to a point where, I couldn’t do it. Hung it back up and continued with my DA. This video has showed me where I’ve been going wrong. Less grip is best results. All of the jumping around has been because of being too tight on the machine, which is where the DA wants to be, where it rotates and oscillates. I’ll give the rotary another outing in the spring and see if I can finally master it. Thanks for such a good video tutorial 👍🏻

Would using a slightly dripping microfibre cloth that’s be dunked in your rimless then gently held against the waffle pad as you spin it up for a second or 2 work with both cleaning and making the waffle pad damp rather than keep removing it from the backing plate. Also for those who are looking into polishing a vehicle, I can strongly recommend getting a test panel from a scrap yard to help you get use to the feel of your machine polisher

@@diydetailofficial feeling inspired, I washed my truck last night. This morning (in the garage) I clay barred the hood (first time using clay) and broke out the Griots G9 I purchased in 2020 and had never even plugged in and got to work on the hood. I'm pleased with my results for a first time but something I've wondered about and seems to get left out of videos is dealing with body lines and curves larger than the pad. I think my F150 is probably easier than the Ram in this video but it's got a few spots. I haven't tried it yet but the roof isn't flat and no one ever shows how to work that. I used a 5" pad btw, not the 6" backing plate that came with my machine.

Awesome content! I have a black car and soon I will try the rotary polisher! (Hope to get better results since my previous attempt was with DA polisher and it didnt cut as I was expecting…)
@broken2550
@broken2550 7 месяцев назад
I don’t think you should buy a whole new polisher unless the dual action wasn’t very good. Maybe buy a Maxshine m8s as a da but if you had a sort of cheaper one the experience could be different due to quality as well as the polish and compound or one step polish you used. As well as if you washed the car properly and decontaminated it before. And usually they add wax and sealent to make it shine so just make sure your analyzing everything before investing more of your money
@FranciscoFernandes-zu5dq
@FranciscoFernandes-zu5dq 7 месяцев назад
@@broken2550thanks for the tips! I am using a reasonable DA machine (not high end as flex or rupes but it is between low-mid range), so maybe my technique is not great.. I used wool rupes pads the blue and yellow and polish was Scholl S20 black. Also tried Meguiars Compound first step and Meg Polish for second step. My car is an audi so maybe it is because of the type of clear coat which is thick and requires a rotary for cutting such deep scratches.
@FranciscoFernandes-zu5dq
@FranciscoFernandes-zu5dq 7 месяцев назад
Regarding prep I know that is key and did quimical and mechanical decon with claybar and proper pre-wash and after polishing also proper wash with panel prep before applying ceramic coating. I think i removed 70-80% of the scratches but since it is a black car is more obvious when you look at it.. 😑
@FranciscoFernandes-zu5dq

It works pretty great for me it came with a red polishing pad, blue cutting and a yellow medium pad I believe as well as a one step polish. I’ve only worked on quite oxidized paint so the results are extremely clear so I couldn’t give any specific advice but test out certain things. Maybe you still have sealent or wax that is not letting the polish actually work into the paint and clear coat. Maybe your using to little or maybe your are being to fast or to slow. Try it out. And if you really feel the need for the new machine then go for it.

I have that Milwaukee 7" rotary. What replacement wheel did you use to turn it into the 6"? Also planning on getting one of their DA units and was wondering if the 15 or 21 would be better given i have the rotary? Im not a professional, but will likely be doing and maintaining 4+ cars.

@Yvan, what size polisher do you prefer more and why? I have about 30yr old Porter Cable 6” DA now, but would like to move to a M18. I was going to go with the 15mm, but a couple of people are telling to move up to the 21mm. Thanks in advance for your invite and thoughts

I'd skip the clay on a newer car if it feels smooth...they do scratch the paint some. I prefer to clean with varsol for tar or methyl hydrate for tree sap (a type ofalcohol from hardware paint section) before ever pulling out a clay bar.

The missing info for me is I want to know how long do we work on the section per one spray of compound. How do we know when to stop? I have a DA brand new but I've never used it, now I'm searching for the rotary one, although I might try to use the Ryobi sander instead 🤭

is gold standard safe with piano black surfaces? and can I just wipe the polish off by spraying ceramic gloss then wipe, for the whole car? seems like a legit paint enhancement method
@diydetailofficial
@diydetailofficial 3 месяца назад
Yes it is! We prefer to wipe with a short nap towel, barely damp from your Rinseless Wash bucket, to remove polish. Then you've got a slightly damp surface and then you just use a light spray/mist of Ceramic Gloss onto the paint, followed by a plush dry towel until it's all dry...this is a great way to polish and protect in *almost* one step

You may need to do more passes. Remember polishing doesn’t remove scratches, it removes the clear coat around the scratch down to the level of the scratch.
