Good video, I chuckled a few times. I was on the fence about replacing my vintage doorbell but now that I know they’re rare I’ll keep it! Thanks!

I moved into mid-century modern ranch with a Nutone model K43 and your videos made me realize I had something special worth restoring. My chimes had a clear coat - I believe factory-applied. So using polish didn’t work - as evidenced by no black goop on the rag. I sanded the clear off with 220 grit sandpaper. Also sanded off tarnish and got out some pitting. Then sanded with 400, then 600, then fine steel wool, then extra fine steel wool, then Brasso polish. They look amazing! Perfect. So just wanted to warn others about the possible clear coat and offer sanding technique that greatly reduces overall effort.

Hi Gary: Well Done restoring your Brass Tubes. The clear cost would have been applied by a previous owner of the Chime. NuTone never put clear coat on their Brass Tubes - Chris

Ok. Whoever did it was a superb finisher. Not a run or dry spot anywhere on the 4 chimes. Kudos to them. I noted your opinion of NOT putting anything on the brass and will follow your lead. All natural for this restoration.

Every junior US Navy sailor is familiar with Brasso. Quarterdecks were full of brass and tranishing/fingerprints were not tolerated.

Did these chimes have a lacquer coating? I have a set of brass chimes that need attention, but I’m afraid that I’m going to have to remove the lacquer to get them looking like new. Thanks!

Mine appears to be all original and my chimes had clear coat on them (model K43 July 1954)

Hi Chris!! Based on the technique you show in the video - I was wondering how many containers of Brasso you think are needed to clean all 3 tubes on a Nutone K-32? I was guestimating one Brasso container per tube but welcome your feedback! Please and thank you of course!

Hi David: I would say that 1) 8oz bottle of Brasso will clean all 3 Tubes - Chris

Can you spray lacquer them after you polish them? Maybe with a clear polycrylic? That is done on brass candlesticks to keep them from tarnishing longer. If it is a thin coat it shouldn't change the sound tone. Wondering if I should polish them. I kind of like the old copper brown patina that 7 decades has given it. It says 'I'm old, deal with it'.

Hi Alexander: Polishing the Tubes really makes the Chime standout and look as it did when it was new. I'm not a fan of tarnished Tubes. I would Never - Ever coat the tubes with anything. This would make them impossible to ever polish in the future. Coating even after polishing is a bad idea. If (or really when) they tarnish again, they can't be polished. I would never coat them - Chris

Hi Sunny: No - I made it look like it did when it was new. Many of these Tubes are so tarnished, especially where they have been touched - they look almost brown. While the polishing does make the brass shiny - there is a pattern on the Brass which does not show up well in the Video. Not to fear, the brass will begin to tarnish again, almost immediately and within a year or so, the finish will soften a lot - Chris
