If you plan on doing this process, set aside A LOT OF TIME because it will take alot longer than you think. Don’t plan on just taking a few hours to do this because you will be here for over a day 100% if you want to make the surface super smooth.
Having the right tools really makes doing the job a lot easier. I couldn’t even imaging trying to do all of this by hand. Before buying tools you don’t need, take a look at your cylinder head or whatever you’re working with, and see if you need the short vs. the long carbide bits. If what you are working with requires the long bits, than buy those, but you shouldn’t have to buy both of them if you’re just planning on doing this once. I bought the short ones to find out I needed the long ones. LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES :)

For the people getting triggered by my super smooth finish, you need to chill. The reason I'm saying this is because you're probably getting mad saying I'm doing something bad.. smooth surface + port injection = worse performance. Well your equation is wrong.. I have the smooth surface (CHECK), but instead of PFI, I have Direct Injection, which means I will indeed see better results when this build is done. You can think your opinion makes a difference on whether or not the air will flow better/ worse, but in reality, your opinion doesn't change physics. Sorry to burst your bubble #lovethehaters #potatosgonnapotate

milanmastracci I was reading the comments and I was thinking the same thing direct injection and tfsi (most Vw have it ) with smooth surface actually perform better as you said
@jompazx1272

Its never good with a mirror finish on the ports not even with direct injection. You want a rough finish because it creates a turbulent layer which will improve airflow think about the golfball the dimples in the golfball creates a turbulent layer witch makes it fly further the same apply to the ports a thin turbulent layer will increase flow. Some high end CNC will have a dimpled finish ground in to it exactly like a golf ball. When you port never use sandpaper finer than 80 grit

Without testing on a dyno (or flowbench) you'll never know for sure. The biggest restriction is the valve seat. That's where you're going to get the big gains. Polishing looks good though.
@mceperformance8978
@mceperformance8978 6 лет назад
That's called the boundary layer. Polishing reduces the boundary layer (that's bad). Carry on. lol
@mannys9130

The enlarging of the ports makes way more of a difference than the surface of the ports. Polished, rough, whatever. The difference is insignificant. Polishing makes the biggest difference for any future carbon buildup imo. It will be much easier to walnut blast any chocolate cake off a polished surface.

Power gains will increase if you smooth the short radius on the exhaust & raise the roof but remember do not over widen the ports as this will decrease velocity.The area just below the valve seat is very important & must blend into the seat . smooth the valve guide boss around the base & shape the port diverters into a knife edge .Have the exhaust valves machined with a 30 degree back cut too . Also have the valve seats re cut when having the new guides installed . Great to see you doing this kinda work it's not easy and takes hours to do . Now you have the flow sorted it does not end there. fitting a high lift cam with a longer duration will bring it all together .
@mceperformance8978

Back cutting the exhaust valves will improve flow (in BOTH directions). That invites reversion, which is bad, you don't want that.

1st I get where you and others are coming from and, really enjoy the enthusiasm! That said you and others are purely engaging based on assumption and repeating what others have said thru experimenting without, a full understand of the "physics" you are miss quoting. You are actually not improving flow, and you are not improving velocity yet nor are greatly altering it. Meaning the sporting part of the exercise is a very good start to anyone's growth so my hat is off to you for getting in there and trying! There are laws we can't ignore in physics which you haven't yet thought apply. What you are tooling at is fluid dynamics and over writing the physics! You need always have a plan, a way to measure and, without exception you must look at the complete picture in order to understand the gains and loses! Your valves will heat more than a set seating flowing thru ports un-tampered with! That means they will also stretch more! Now I've seeded some experience with you so please don't insist that I am wrong, I began doing this in the 70's . I have made my share of mistakes as well; It's all good and if you study up and read past page one you will someday be sharing your gains and loses, as well. All the best

He has said MANY TIMES if you actually listen “theoretically” which laymen in terms means “when you think about it” which when you do, which you didn’t, you realize that there is also a difference between wet and dry runners and it’s common sense that when you have obstructions in a glow path, be they fluid or air, you will get turbulence when in turn reduces flow and velocity. So going back to the wet vs dry runner this is a dry runner setup being that it’s DFI you WILL see increased flow and velocity based on common sense and knowledge. I can’t believe someone who tries to sound so intelligent can’t see how through basic knowledge this will yield results on a flow bench I would put money behind it. It’s not rocket appliances 🚀

This is what I like. Someone that knows what they're talking about rather than trying to be a RU-vid Expert and giving incorrect information which causes them to waste time and money ruining an engine because they had no clue what they're doing from watching a RU-vid Expert! People should stop trying to be teachers when they haven't even been to school themselves!!
@patch8462

@@nathanwilliams7492 There is a common term that is used when we butt into "common sense" arguments that make zero sense, it is called "not intuitive" which means it works opposite to what is anticipated! In this case Nathan, your common sense makes no sense for the intake ports. Sorry but that is just the way it is. Now as for the exhaust ports you can polish them it helps slow carbon buildup but the "in theory can make turbo spool faster" YIKES guys that more than a stretch of imagination.. lol
@patch8462
@patch8462 4 года назад
@@ArcAngel572nc Porting is a bit of black magic and does have its place, can produce some positive results however it can also produce some very negative ones as well. A for example there is much to learn about friction,say as in the example of these intake ports. Also there are many velocity tricks that are built into ports so, when someone is talking in general terms about high spots be ground out, there should be some cause for concern on how that is perceived by those without the understanding of WHY they may have been cast into place. That said I believe there is much to gain by experimenting providing you take the time to study up. Cheers Bobby

I wouldn’t waste any time with those tiny dremel buffing wheels. That bag you showed of those “little foam pieces” work really well. If you use wd40 while you use them it helps; you can get a mirror finish with those. Competitionproducts.com has probably the best deal on them they are called cross buffs. I would use medium, fine, and very fine; also like I said before wd40 spray down the port you are working on and go to town. You can get a longer mandrel to use them on your drill. I prefer using an air powered die grinder (they are nice and small) but you need a pretty big air compressor to keep up with a die grinder. You are right about it being time consuming. A 4cyl head like that would take me a full 40hr work week. Anyway nice work and cool mini. I used to have a laser blue 2010 Mini Cooper S.

So what you're saying is, size matters, use protection :D. On a serious note, do you think making those peaks in the exhaust ports so sharp going to make them heat up a lot more? I remember reading something a long time ago about head design and how they round that split area to help prevent heat buildup. I could be remembering it wrong.
@milanmastracci
@milanmastracci 6 лет назад
Yes you are correct. The more aggressive of a bend, the worse it will flow, which means the more heat will stay in the cylinder head. I did a bit of reshaping and 'shortened the floor' of the port instead of 'raising the roof'. I hope that makes sense :)

@milanmastracci
@milanmastracci 6 лет назад
Yes. Since the intake valves were so clogged up with carbon and oil, they could not make a proper seal which was causing nothing but problems for me. Hopefully with an Oil Catch can, and eventually a water methanol kit, I shouldn't ever have to worry about this problem again.. I would do a compression test to see if the engine is healthy, and then a leak down test to see if/where you have a leak :)

After that I polish both intake and exhaust ports to literally a mirror finish. On the combustion chamber if you just sand it down DON'T USE A BURR JUST SAND PAPER it will only drop the compression if you do it right by .3:1 that is less then half of a point. Thank you

@hachi-rokuperformancegroup3987
tdawg719 polishing intake side decreases turbulence which means the air and fuel wont mix like it should and will drastically reduces performance. This is something done to high performance builds not mild builds. If its not a high horsepower build or big boost you will hurt the performance. One other point: You'd gain ALLOT more by doing a better valve job. The "restriction" is the valve seat 99% of the time. NOT the port surface/finish. Although polishing looks really fast, it doesn't do anything. I call this fluff-n-buff.

yeah on a port injected engine but on this direct injection engine turbulence wont be a limiting factor since fuel never mixes in the port, only in the cylinder.
@hachi-rokuperformancegroup3987
Jonathan Rodriguez true but it can affect velocity if your not making the engine suck in more air. Idk the exact build but it seems to be a mild build from what I've seen. Big port heads on a small cc engine loses power and torque on the low end and only helps it top end at higher rpm so depending on the application determines if its worth it or not. Port and polish usually isn't done till sanificant power is made over stock for this reason
