In this video I will show you how to pour a new concrete patio slab over an old existing concrete slab. This old concrete slab was structurally sound but the surface was in pretty bad shape. It was also poured in a couple sections and sloped back towards the house. I suggested we pour a new stamped concrete patio slab right over the old concrete slab instead of removing it. The reason for this was there was no reason to remove it. The old slab wasn't all cracked up and settling, it wasn't lifting or heaving in the winter, it just didn't look good and was sloped the wrong way. By pouring a new concrete slab over the old one it made a smaller step up into the garage for this homeowner. The old step up was around 10", now the new step up is close to 6" making it a much easier step for them.
Since some of the new concrete was 2" thick, I decided to bond the new concrete to the old concrete. I used Weld-Crete for this. You just brush it on the entire surface of the old concrete, let it dry, and pour right over it. The new concrete re-activates it and bonds the concrete together. I recommend bonding any concrete over pour like this if it's less than 3" thick.

Did my first concrete slab 3 years ago for a shed for my mother in law. 12' x 20' monolithic pour. Didn't use bull float but ran a straight 2x4 back and forth on top of the forms, waited for the concrete to dry a bit then I mag float the whole floor and gave it a broom finish. Turned out really nice. In a month I'm doing 2 pours for 2 sheds 12'x10' and using the same procedure I used 3 years ago. Everything is air entrained and fiber meshed. Awesome video, keep up the good work.

Really great videos, thank you so much for providing this information. I'm raising a garage floor- 9 x 14 feet and 4 inches deep at the front, 3 inches at the back. Should I use Iso-strip against the concrete base wall or let it bond? New to this so want to make sure I get it right. I'm planning on using wire and bonding agent too. Really grateful for any advice. TIA.

I grew up in the concrete and masonry trade with my father as my teacher, so I have been doing this for quite a while, and Yes, I definitely can relate to the weather pushing you around. I am prepping and pouring a 35 x 15 patio, which has a roughly 10 x 10 existing concrete patio inside the area. I was going to put a bonding agent down and then a rebar mat 1 foot on center, what would you recommend?

love your vids man! Question if you don't mind if I pick your brain. I have a 20x20 slab in my pool yard, the concrete is around 15 years old and in great shape. Relief cuts were made about a week after they poured it years ago and there are no visible cracks. The surface was a fine broom finish, i have painted it once 3 years back to make it look fresh. None of that paint has peeled. The problem is this pad that I am referring to, has an adjacent concrete slab poured up to it on one side, however that pad is 1.5 inches above this pad, is it an awful idea to pour a slab of 1.5 inches on this to make them even? Hoping with the situation that the existing pads' condition is so great, that it might work out? If so what type of prep would you suggest me to do before the pour? do I need to remove the paint? also what type concrete; strength and or additive would I order? I am in upstate NY and have pretty harsh winters, thanks for any advice!!
@learningisgrowing
@learningisgrowing 3 года назад
Really interesting videos you share - thank you. I had a pad poured for me, and they contractors used a hardning agent to speed up the drying time as they chose a day that was very windy, it rained several times throughout the day, and periodically bright warm sun. They didn't cover the pad during times of rain, and in the end, it destroyed the top layer, there were pitted sections of the pad along the wall side where the rain runoff fell... the concrete cracked approx 25 times in less than 6 weeks, and there was a lot of discolouration, and strange circle patterns in some parts of the pad. They tried grinding and sealing the pad as an attempt to fix it, but it is still quite badly discoloured... I think New Zealand is in need of good quality tradesmen

I am about to pour cement over an existing 12x30 slab (original slab is probably 4 inches thick-not cracked-27 years old). Going to pour another 4 1/2" high at house and slope down to 3 1/2" at outside edge (free standing back porch going on it, 6x6 posts so not an outdoor room or anything. I like the bonding agent and rebar, my question is do you need plastic between the two slabs? Any thoughts on adding some fiber to the mix?
@jasonbarrier3115
@jasonbarrier3115 2 года назад
Mike, if the existing patio had a couple coats of paint (100% acrylic paint), would you recommend the removal of that paint first, before applying the concrete bonding agent? I would guess a rougher surface to the existing concrete patio would promote better bonding to the new concrete. If removal of the paint is preferred, do you have a recommendation on how best to do that? My local tool rental shop has a cement grinder, but the more aggressive "accessories" that it comes with is designed to not only remove the paint but also do light leveling. That seems a bit overkill. They don't offer a more mild disk with the cement grinder. Instead, I could rent a floor polisher/ buffer with a cutting removal tool, but those appear to be designed for interior concrete and the video states it is not designed for sidewalks and patios. Thanks for your suggestions.
@MikeDayConcrete
@MikeDayConcrete 2 года назад
I lightly grind off the old paint then use the bonding agent. I use a hand grinder and diamond cup wheel. Apply pressure as needed to remove the paint.

Hi Mike, with that front lip only 2 inches, is there any chance it might crack considering they drive the lawnmower up on that lip? I was considering to have someone pour a thin (1-2 inch) coat over existing pool decking (4 inch concrete with the pebbles exposed) and was told that they would not want to do that due to potential cracking of the stamped concrete. is that a valid concern?

Thanks for the info. I have a very stable patio but want to extend it and overpour so the texture will match. Do you feel this is the best method as I've have a few concrete folks say they dowel the current slab which has post tension wires in it because it was poured and connected as part of the house slab. I don't feel comfortable with doweling from what I've read. Also, do you not trip the isostrip level with the concrete or does it have to stick above the poured concrete? Thanks.

Why would you want to pour it in 2 pours. We've done 1000's of radiant floors and never done that way?

I had someone pour me a patio and it has sloping dips in different parts ot also slope away from the house but when I sit chairs there and sit in them I lean forward can I level it by adding the square flag stones and mortar I don't know how to work with concrete but I rather try myself than pay someone again and get a messed up job I'm so aggravated by this I really need help

I suppose you could mortar and flagstone over it if you're capable.

does bonding a concrete slab over an old slab of concrete cause cracking due to differences in expansion and contraction at different rates of the two slabs?
@MikeDayConcrete
@MikeDayConcrete 2 года назад
It could but not really too much trouble if you bond them together.

Pouring in the rain happens when your boss thinks he’s a weatherman!!😡 48 years pouring, years ago, me and my crew had a slogan,” when it rains,we pour”!🤣

Hi Mike. I have a garage built in a concrete slab. The garage is 30 feet long and 16 feet wide. The city wants a concrete foundation put in if I convert the garage to a garden suite. Is there a way to put a foundation under an existing slab? Thank you. Gary Schneider.

It would probably be more expensive than just doing it from scratch. I'd say no but depends on what the city specs as a "foundation".

Our Contractor did a horrible job on a slab for the shed. Any ideas how to fix it? He used boulders and mulch as a fill. And when the forms came off, you can see the gaps under the slab. Do you have an email where I can send you pictures?

Why use the Weld Crete? What does it do? Just looks like paint.

how do you make forms for a concrete ramp if it's sitting on concrete?

I usually use Tapcon screws to secure the forms to the existing concrete.
