nobody’s gonna sit down and teach you every scale because there’s way too many of them lmao. he’s just referring to how to shape the scale on the fretboard so that you’re not confined to one position, which will really hold you back when improvising solos
It isn’t an SG-it is his Rick Beato signature Gibson Les Paul with a unique double cutaway. Go look it up. Slightly different from an SG. It only comes in one color.
Then you've never heard nothing compared to all the music that is out there; if you get amazed by simple scale playing, imagine arrangements and composition together.
This is such a good idea Rick. Imagine this being how you’re taught scales right off the bat, so you don’t have to go out of your way to then later on break out of the “boxes”.
I was trying to put this in words, but you said it pretty much straight forward. I would humbly add that it may be hard to see the restrictions in creativity (e.g. soloing) that position playing can put on you, until you actually can break free. Like hindsight, 20/20 and all that. But I guess we all gotta start somewhere ;) Cheers!
An interesting thing: I first started with 2-3 diagonal pentatonic, which made the boxes more intuitive. I think teaching diagonally helps to show where those main shapes connect
Hi Rick! Congrats on making 60. I'll be 57 in May..never believed I would make passed 30. Anyhow, I'm watching ur lessons on scales.. I can't afford ur lesson guides, between jobs.. Thank you for your candor and generosity!
I’ve found it helpful to play 3 notes per string for alternate speed picking practice on guitar. You easily fall to the next string that way. I will be practicing this 4 note method on my bass tho. Appreciate the heads up
Rick God bless, you have been a tremendous blessing with your advice and example, which will last through time for many generations. Donnie Estrada Troetsch
Tried playing guitar again last night, after I ran my pinky finger under a chain, at work. I was lubing the laminating machine chain up and my hand slipped, and did a revolution around the chain. It took the nail off entirely. The nail isnt back yet, but had the itch to play yesterday, so I tried, and oh my, it made my finger start to throb, when pushing down on the strings. It is still very raw and sore. The bone is bruised too.
Beautiful guitar with some kind of sustain floating as you play that scale! It has that Neal Schonn feel to it, from the infinity album? Love his, and the band playing together. Neal's cosmic notes are a perfect floating dance with Steve's soaring voice. Perfect name for a band that acoustically and harmoniously literally took you on a Journey!
I’m a 40 year old man with aspirations of becoming a shredder. For my own gain. I’ve been playing a while and neglected to learn the fretboard. This seems like a great place to start. Thank you very much.
I just stopped the video a few times and figured it out pretty quickly. The concept is simple enough. Start at one note, go up 2 notes per string through the scale, stay on the last string until the next octave, then descend through that same scale 2 notes per string. You'll learn a lot more trying to figure out the notes of the scale, rather than simply playing a line off of notation. The last part is just the ascending triad arpeggio with 2 extra notes on the descend for a better resolution to the tonic.
Wow ! That is so awesome brother !!! I definitely need to learn the notes of the fretboard, I been playing for years and still never took the time to actually memorize the fretboard,, TY ,, 😎✌️🎶🎶🎶
I’ve been practicing the caged system for those five shapes on the guitar and and playing the chords that they’re based on using those five shapes, and then building major scales around those positions. Also, practice, major, harmonic minor, melodic minor, and harmonic major scales
Like coming from trumpet for 7 years and now guitar for the past two. I know what the scales sound like and what notes are but he just makes it look easy!
Nice little practice piece. I stopped practicing the guitar for some years and need to get back at it. Ugh, I still try to press my fingers through the fingerboard so have to try and relax. 😂
Bloody hell! finally I feel I want to have a go at scales and trying to learn my way around the neck same as i do keyboard. watching you run up and down the steps i suddenly saw the shapes and thought “it’s the same, I can do this!” just a bit more complex with the scales sitting on top of one another rather than spread out in a single line as on keyboard. And loving the catchphrase: “like that!” 👌🏻🙏🏻
