I'm a new rider and I can learn a lot from people telling me what I do wrong or seeing how it's done right. I won't become a good rider without practice, but I can visualise in my mind what I need to do and how I need to position myself with the help of these videos. This video might not be useful for experienced riders but I find it useful. Thank you for making it!

You have a great attitude about it! Visualizing can help a LOT, especially if you can't get as much time in the saddle as you'd like to! I know this is an old comment, I hope you have made lots of progress!

I actually find videos quite helpful and I've been riding for a while, It's good to see other peoples ideas on what they see to be the 'best' position or whatever, I've learnt loads from videos like trimming, plaiting and yes how to improve my position so don't be too quick to say they are useless x

Awesome, I did all of these exercises when I was 6 or 7 and first starting to ride, but had forgotten a lot of it! Now I can help out friends who are always asking how I got my seat and I just can't explain it to them. lol! Thanks for sharing!

a lot of these correction exercises are right on. good video. I think you could go further explaining to people the 'damage', pain & 'rein lameness' to the horse caused by these classic position faults. thanks and compliments to the riders here who are demonstrating the problems -- that is a humble and helpful thing for other riders and may help horses too.

YES! Toes IN! If you turn your toes out, they could get caught on a rail, and you use more cummunication with the INSIDE of your leg vs the back.

you are most likely gripping with your knees. try gripping with your lower leg at walk without stirrups. gripping with the knee creates a pivot point for the rest of your knee. hope this helps!

pointing yourtoes opens your hips outwards (from behind). This allow you to settle into the horse. The point of contact with your calf should be the inside front. If you ppont your toes two far out you're hips will close off. also check your stirrup length as well. Above all you should not be forcing your heels down,that will cause tension in the body which will be picked up by the horse. You're heel should fall lower than your toe if your stiruup length is correct.

I think the "straightness from behind" might be an allusion from the woman's shirt covering the cantle of the saddle. I had to double take on that though.

Toe lowering and leaning forward "takes weight off" the saddle, preparing to drive forward again which she did splendidly. Possibly a green horse. Imagine a rider leaning back with hands up and pulling, not, pulling, not--- now CANTER with a purpose! Whoops, popped the horse in the mouth and lurched all over the place with a hollowed frame, if you got to canter within ten yards of where you asked in the first place.

please note that Grisone, Guérinière, Löyeneysen, Pluvinel, Ridinger, Newcastle, Andrade and many other old masters do NOT have a straight line from elbow to bit,intentionally, explicitly, deliberately. ('decente de main' and all that) Also note that the position of the foot is NOT the cause or the essence of the chair seat, it is the position and rotation of the upper leg bone (knee). The position of the feet have fairly little to do with it. Also note that the 'treading of the stirrup' is an important topic in classical dressage and that the seatbone on the inside of the bend is weighted more. (Routinely form about 1450 to 1870 in pretty much all occasions.) Also the leg from the knee down is considered the 'mobile leg' and the upper leg the 'immobile leg' also note that very many depictions of the old masters have the feet further forward than the vertical line, yet have the knees of the rider further back and close to the horse, yet not clamped on. some very specific combat turns show the foot straight down to tread the stirrup. also note how the lady in the video does not weight her seatbones equally in the half pass at all.. and she is quite right to do so. this rule of thumb is really quite deceptive in many ways, though much of the rest of what is said does nuance it quite nicely. but the key points of ilium and Femur alignment and rotation are simply much more important... which is the crux of the matter.
@hippophile
@hippophile 8 лет назад
+airnt I think she is aiming to instruct at a more basic level, and the tips are all good. Honestly, until you balance and go with the horse naturally, the seat will never be perfect, but these are alll good, basic corrections. BTW I am not sure you understand the term descente de main, which is a softening and lightening of the hand as a reward or sometimes as a check for self-carriage.
@airnt
@airnt 8 лет назад
descente de main means lowering of the hand. if your hand is already in extention (in the straight line) there is no give left. a horse will need up to 20 cm of space in the reins to meaningfully get a free poll, even in relative elevation, that cannot be given in the fingers, your hand is simply not big enough. (nonte this is for temporary space needed, the face of he horse can need to be mobile from stride to stride, sp slipping the reinsin not an option, extremes of this might include a zig zag half pass, for instance) hence the hand is carried above the wither and can be lowered to give (nachgeben) but the term 'descente de main' is not quite the same as 'nachgeben' teaching beginners these things like this does not help them. telling people what they need to know helps.
@hippophile
@hippophile 8 лет назад
I use the term descente de main in the same way as Arthur Kottas (former First Chief Rider of the Spanish Riding School) and other top classical dressage riders. You cannot simply translate word for word from the French. Similarly Descente de Jambes does not mean you drop your legs, but you cease or reduce leg aids when the horse moves correctly without them, and enjoy the ride!
@airnt
@airnt 8 лет назад
the term originates much earlier, there it was more literal.. The mirroring of the term for the legs is a later term. also read descarpentry and guérinièrre They are really quite clear about what they mean Karl goes into detail about the mistranslation. where guérinière talks about the hand of the rider setting the horses' head hight

@MinockerSpanichle
@MinockerSpanichle 11 лет назад
Not inwards, point them forward. Toes should point straight forward like you see the classical rider in the video when she is facing the camera. Toes out will bang your heel against the horse and take your leg away from the horse, toes inward will poke your horse and take your lower calf away. So, forward and straight. Some people will have you exercise with toes inward to help adjust the muscle so you can ride straight, but that shouldn't be the main form of riding.

first , if you show how something is done,be sure that you demo is perfect; yours is not! Looking form te back you see that the sadle is tilted to the right. And for the rest it is all theory! I have seen great riders who are not riding as you are proposing they should, But the result were there.: Ernest van Loon, Henk van Bergen, Jan Nivelle, Klaus balkenhol, George Theodorescu, Willi Schultheis, Pedro Torres, Nuno Oliveira, AND OTHERS.....LOOK THEM UP !!
@airnt
@airnt 7 лет назад
torres and oliviera use a more classical seat than this 'classical' seat, no more than 100 years old.... at a push,... 19th century cavalry manuals specifically recommend a shoulder behind the hip position with a longer upper leg, though a foot almost directly under the knee...

Explain to me why you shift your weight forward to go backwards at 1:21, explain to me how that makes any sense at all. And you should really soften your hands a lot. If you did, you wouldn't need a second noseband because your horse keeps opening his mouth in pain and he wouldn't keep trying to avoid the bit by going behind the pol. What an expert you are...*slow clap
@Caspian_Treasure
@Caspian_Treasure 10 месяцев назад
My guess is that since she is a slightly older rider, she has less flexibility in her lower back. So, when she's asking the horse to back up, in order to position her pelvic bone in the right place, she must lean forward slightly. She quickly recovers to a normal position, tho. I would say she has quite a loose reign at most times. However, I notice that instead of having 'giving elbows', and having a soft hand, she does tend to use a loose reign as compensation.
@LIir321
@LIir321 12 лет назад
Actually they spelt practice correctly... "Practice"
@Jacqfox1
@Jacqfox1 12 лет назад
Notice how totally not straight she is from behind - the saddle is even twisted off to one side too - note the "easier communication" via hauling on the reins, less damage to horses back showing horse swishing tail revealing his back discomfort, notice the toes not being kept in and hollow backed rider on bay. The "fixed" wobbly lower leg rider on the grey bounces in trot appallingly even though she was allegedly fixed.hands of rising trot rider still rise up and down with her.
