How to prep a block of briar for pipe making - beginning pipe making

I made this videos as a request from someone wanting to know how I prep my briar blocks before drilling. This video is intended for people getting into pipe making and wanting to learn how to setup a block of briar. Several pipe makers have their own way of doing this, but this is how I prep my blocks. In this video I'm prepping a block to make a billiard tobacco pipe.
I realize this video is a bit drawn out. If was made after a 9 hour day at work and then a few more ours making pipes.
Sorry, I do not share my pipe templates. It's an important skill to learn, whether it's done freehand and replicated with carbon pipe, heavy card stock and traced, created in a program like Gimp, or as I have done in Photoshop. If you create your template using software, make sure you can print at the exact size as you designed. Photoshop does a very good job at printing accurately.

Thanks brother! Really interesting. Are you self taught? I imagine you’ve always been a woodworker ? Your pipes are incredible. I’ll have one of them someday. Semper Fi Kraig!

If I were not using Briar, but using let's say Ash or Oak, would I orient the grain in the block up and down for the bowl or side to side for the stem?

Did you create all of your templates or did you find them somewhere? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I've been looking for templates and can't seem to find them anywhere

How can you make a pattern for a tanker and poker barrel tobacco pipe patterns like petterson pipes

There are several different ways of going about it, but I like to make my templates on a computer. This is just how I would do it; I would find a good side picture of the tanker or poker online and save the image. You can then bring the image into a graphics application like Photoshop, or the free GIMP program. I then size my image in the graphics program to match the given dimensions of the pipe, with the document rulers on. Set your image to inches or millimeters and then size your image on it's own layer until the size of the pipe image matches the size specs. Without a graphics program you could use graph paper and mark the height and length and start sketching in the pipe shape. It doesn't have to be exact since you can fine tune the shape with a small belt sander, a Dremel tool, or files. I then cut out my template and glue it to the block of briar for cutting out the rough shape and drilling. I'm not sure if this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
