This video is strictly for those who love cockles! If you don’t like them, you might find this video rather gory haha. It shows live cockles and how to prepare them for cooking.
It is very important to only buy the freshest cockles and to prepare them well to remove bits of sand which will ruin your dish!
Our family members are definitely cockle/kerang/see-hum people! We always ask for extra in our char kuey teow and laksa. The more, the better, the tastier!

1:55 "I heard my ancestors crying" when I see you just deshell and basically wash everything away. Blanching them in boiling water for 10 to 20 secs is enough.

Hmmm, you wash the flesh of the cockles and poured away the blood? You will lose all the "juice" that is associated with cockles.

Oh wow, Ignatius, you are a true blue see hum fan! We are a bit chicken when it comes to “bloodiness” due to food safety reasons so we prefer to have the cockles fully cooked.

@@AnneSoosayCooks I am not. I normally do not blanch the cockles. I will wash and brush them thoroughly. Open the live cockles (these days with a tool), scrap away the dirt and then take out the meat with the blood into a container. That is for Char Kway Teow. Otherwise, we leave the meat in the shell and pour our spicy sauce over it. Eat with porridge.
