A little video showing the unbelievably sized Cockles i foraged from the sea shore in Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire.
Never have i seen them this big before, they were some real monsters, absolutely bursting with top quality meat.
You really can not beat free food from the natural wild larder.
be it from the hedgerow, stream or shoreline.
Field to fork, sea/stream to plate.
What Is A Cockle...?
A cockle is a small, edible, saltwater clam, a marine bivalve mollusc. Although many small edible bivalves are loosely called cockles, true cockles are species in the family Cardiidae. True cockles live in sandy, sheltered beaches throughout the world. The distinctive rounded shells are bilaterally symmetrical, and are heart-shaped when viewed from the end. Numerous radial evenly spaced ribs are a feature of the shell in most but not all genera (for an exception, see the genus Laevicardium, the egg cockles, which have very smooth shells).
The shell of a cockle is able to close completely (i.e., there is no "gape" at any point around the edge). Though the shell of a cockle may superficially resemble that of a scallop because of the ribs, cockles can be distinguished from scallops morphologically in that cockle shells lack "auricles" (triangular ear-shaped protrusions near the hinge line) and scallop shells lack a pallial sinus. Behaviorally, cockles live buried in sediment, whereas scallops are either free-living and will swim in the sea water to avoid a predator, or in some cases they live attached by a byssus to a substrate.

Awe, that was cute to have your daughter join you. You should have her help you more often. I love to see younger kids being taught how to cook by their parents. I wish I was taught by my mother and especially by my grandmother. She really knew how to cook.

Fun Vid Scott, I love Cooking with my Grandchildren. And my Kids when they were younger. I never had a Cockle but those were almost as big as the Little Neck Clams I do, maybe the same size.

Hey, Scott! You have to work on your "She shells by the sheshore"! Cockles are fabulous, especially when you get your own. In France I buy "coques" -- same thing. But, I usually make clam chowder -- both New England and Manhattan style. They're also very good in a sauce with fettuccini.

Why the mega size difference between the crummy consumer bought ones & the freshly foraged? That's some crazy contrast there. Like the difference between Arnold Schwarzenegger & Danny DeVito in Twins.

Look up on youtube for a video on how to make a fish trap from two hacked up 2 litre plastic bottles. Stick them in the lake near the shore with a bit of bait at about 7-8pm and then come back at 6am the next morning. Boom, fresh fish. ;)

Need to be careful here in the states during the warm summer months when clamming. Red tide blooms are much more frequent as both the summers and waters get warmer. I do enjoy digging for Quahog's once it cools down.

For those asking: they taste like cockles. No other way to describe it. Nothing like mussels or oysters and with a much firmer bite to it. Best way for me is to fry them off in butter and eat on bread. Or even raw (sticking two 'butts' in one another and twist - really easy).

So, it looks like a clam, so I'm assuming it tastes like a clam, but how does a pickled cockle taste? I can't say I've ever seen any pickled fish (or shellfish) other than herring here in the US, but I've never looked.
