How do you prepare for the coming hunting ammo shortage? Ammunition component manufacturing has had some disruptions, particularly gun powder. Also military contracts are soaking up more ammo than usual, and we have an every four year event on the horizon which has forecasted a major ammunition shortage this year effecting deer hunters, turkey hunters, waterfowl hunters, as well as those going after pheasants, doves, crows, and much more.

How can hunters beat this shortage? I share three strategies to help you take reasonable precautions to keep a modest stock and do the testing and sighting in you need to do now while ammo is cheap and plentiful. Some have said that ammo is going to be banned or completely sold out at stores and ammunition prices will spike or rise significantly. I learned this when Ob came to power. 5-10k of 22lr for practicing your rifle skills, hunting ammo 100-300 rounds. AMMO PRICES ALWAYS GOES UP.

I've never shot a deer that knew the difference between practice ammo and hunting ammo. They all fall to hard ball.

It depends on what your practice ammo is. FMJ will often kill the deer, eventually, days or miles later. Which is why they banned it here for hunting. The loss rates are terrible.@@ericoverdorff8880

I got probably 20 years worth of hunting ammo and still buying more. Got some guns that I don’t use as much and don’t have that much ammo for them but am buying it. The price is jacked up so much and will be jacked up a lot more. Just bought a few pounds of black powder for muzzle loaders. Ordered 5 boxes of 3” .410 shells online. Can’t find anything but slugs and defense loads in stores.

Years ago my friends would laugh at me when I bought cases of 5.56 for $218. They’d laugh and say what do you think we’re gonna run out of ammo? Lolol. Guess who’s not paying $.80 a round now?😜

Oh man, I wish I would have built up a surplus back then and just maintained it as I practiced and hunted. But storage space does become a factor.

@@TheNewHuntersGuide trust me you find space. I vacuum seal All my ammo. Keeps it dry. If you see prices drop buy as much as you can if you can. I went to the range yesterday and was shooting 20 year old surplus ammo. Beautiful and my chronograph clocked the speed with no drop at all. I always try and buy surplus ammo any time it’s available. It never goes bad. Good luck

Haha, well, I do alot of shotgun work, and sporting clays. I would store a pellet of target loads if I had the space. Shotgun shells take up alot of room.@@rburrows7786

So far i haven't seen the ultimate panic that we saw a few years ago...lotta ammo on the shelf, albeit pricey...of course, we fired 29 rounds at the range yesterday...we can shoot more ammo, but prefer to shoot more often (weekly seems okay)...our thinking is a dozen rounds once a week better than 50 rounds once a month...

Just spent $1000 on reloading press and materials. 12 gauge tungsten here I come :) Living in CA sucks… can’t have ammo shipped to my door. Just applied for FFL 03+COE. Just so I can have ammo shipped to my door. Having to rely on basspro inventory is a miserable experience.

They overruled that restriction on ammo being shipped, just last week. I’ve had 3 cases arrive since then. Rogers and Brownells are both shipping to CA. 🎉

Thanks for the tips George. Here in Canada we're really at the end of the line when it comes to reloading components. Added to that the ever increasing regulations exporting components into Canada discourage manufacturers (like Boss) from doing it. I've been lucky so far with powder and primers but there is only 1 importer of Ballistic Products in this province and they are the only ones that carry any shotgun BB's. Even this early in the year they have sold out of #3 bismuth.

🇦🇺😎👍There is no hunting ammo shortage in Australia, just a shortage of money to buy it. $40 to $70 per 20 rds for Winchester, Remington etc. the cheapest 223 is $19 per 20 for PPU. No steel case just mega el premium de larbrio

We suddenly could not get ANY american powders in England, as they were all sold out. As I had some B/dot left I started to use that instead of Steel. By dropping the steel shot load by 1/8oz. Low and behold it worked fantasticaly, but at a lower velocity: still getting my limit of ducks. Our usual lead cartridges have gone up from £290 a thousand to £340! a thousand so we bought the last 2000 they had -hope that will last until November as we shoot a lot of crows, pigeons and squirrels. On another note, last year I was watching an American loading video and showed a tin of Steel powder with a price of $12-95. We were paying £50! A bit of a rip off. Keep up the good work.

If you manage your inventory well, you should never need to panic buy. That's the biggest take away.

Yea, it takes alot of investment to get the point where you can save money. And even then you are still at the mercy of the marketplace to some degree.

I still have lots of ammo left over from the last ammo shortage, which was due to insane hoarding during 2011-13. I even dumped some 2 decade old stuff at my club garage sale. So I'm sitting this hoard out. Good point, my 3/4 box of green box .308 ammo will last for years with a one shot kill.

As a fervent 16ga shooter, when I see 16ga, I buy 16ga; because I dont know when or where I’m gonna find it again. Could be a month, could be a year, could be two years or more. I ended up getting into shotshell reloading because of how hard it was to find 16ga. Availability is getting better than it had been, but it still comes in spurts.

Our 16 sees 4-6 shells once a year, gets cleaned, and back into safe...I hoard a few boxes of #1 buckshot, and #6 rabbit ammo...have a couple boxes of #8 for the function checks...I might buy one or two more boxes of the birdshot at the rate I shoot the stuff...we don't rely on the gun for anything, but being functional gotta keep at least a little ammo for it...

A foreign conglomerate Now owns Federal, Remington ammunition, Hevi-shot, CCI, and others can control the supply of ammunition and components. This appears to be heading the same direction as the Drug supply industry.

Vista Outdoors owns at least 41 brands. The sale of Vista to the Czechoslovak Group ( CSG) should not have been allowed, IMO. CSG has already announced that they will have "significant increases" in the cost of their ammo in 2024. My blood boils.

Are you a reloader by chance? It's surprisingly not too expensive to obtain the bare necessities for reloading shotshells. It's not only a fun hobby but adds a layer of security against ammo shortages, plus it gives you the ability to make custom and obscure loadings you just can't find anymore.

Feel free to fact-check me here, but here's the situation as I understand it: The Biden Administration has placed restrictions on both the import and the export of firearms and ammunition. Lake City Ammo (LCA), which accounts for near 30% of ammo sold on the civilian market in the U.S. is owned by the U.S. Army and operated under contract by Winchester. LCA has announced that once current contracts are fulfilled, they will no longer produce ammo for sale in the civilian market. Vista Outdoors (VO) owns at least 41 brands and produces a little less than 70% of the ammo sold in the civilian market.. VO was recently sold to the Czechoslovak Group ( CSG) for about 1.9 billion dollars. CSG has already announced that they will have "significant increases" in the cost of their ammo in 2024. LCO and VO account for more than 90% of civilian ammo. And now there are restrictions on import & export so where will our ammo come from? Small-scale manufacturers such as Palmetto State Armory simply cannot keep up with demand. All this adds up to what I believe is very likely to be a severe ammunition shortage, which will drive the cost up to nose-bleed altitudes. I've never been much of a conspiracy theorist, but I can't help fearing that "the left" aims to disarm us by not only making firearms harder to obtain and keep, but also by limiting access to ammo. "To conquer a nation, first disarm its citizens.” It is not clear if Adolf Hitler spoke those exact words, but he did express the sentiment.

I’m waiting on the next shortage and then I will advertise my ammo for sale at three times what I paid for it. I have thousands of primers waiting to be sold and lots of brass and bullets. The store will be open soon

well if shtf doesent happen then i have enough 22lr and big game ammo to to last my wife and i for about 3 years per gun but if it does hit the fan then we have the back up stash that stays in the ammo cans thats 500 rounds per centerfire gun and 10000 22lr for small game

I personally have been wanting to get into reloading however the last 5 years or so powder and primers not to mention brass cannot be found. I don’t want to order from an online store and pay the hazmat fees. This is in my home state of WI

Honestly, I probably have more hunting ammo than I'll ever use. I have so many half used boxes from doing all this ammo test videos. I will run out of my favorite loads eventually, but I could probably hunt off the rest for many years to come.

Hey George, good advice! Nothing surprises me after the last 7 yrs.! One example is RST shells that I've bought from.They were crippled during the ''virus'' and still haven't recovered. Not sure what to think there! ''Dry mouth to racoons''.......don't give them any ideas,lol, but I wouldn't be surprised! Who knows anymore? @@TheNewHuntersGuide Military ammo is FMJ. There were things that were done to them get expansion. Probably not a good idea. But if you know any about guns, what I am saying would quite clear. The safest is to simply pull bullets and substitute a soft point rather than cutting off bullet tips.

Yes true, but the election isn't a rumor. Neither were the announcements at Shot Show about powder supply issues, nor the ammo company CEO's that said their powder suppliers are starting come up empty for new stock. I guess the CEOs could be making it up to stir hysteria and sell more ammo in the slow season. But they told the truth the last time they said this.

I saw the writing on the wall when The Obama Regime came into power and is still active today. Ammo can be stored for a extremely long time if done properly. Unfortunately I lost all my ammo and firearms in a boating accident.
