Hello Friends,
Now that my large garden bed is built, it's time to fill it with soil. Since I'm following the Square Foot Gardening method developed by Mel Bartholomew, I want to use his soil mix recipe to fill the bed. I'm working with a budget so I had to tweak it a little bit to get it to work and make my bank account happy!

Thanks for checking out my video and for your kind comments. I really prefer the Mel's Mix to other growing mediums that I've tried. It's much better at water retention, but light enough for seeds to sprout in. Square foot gardening is a lot of fun IMO. Good luck with your gardening projects.

All of my garden tours feature beds and pots filled with this soil mix, except for the 5 gallon buckets which I'm not using at this time . I really like this mix! In general, veggies grow well in it and seem to thrive. I have added mulch to cover the beds during some seasons since I live in southern California, and we're in a drought. Sounds about right. My beds were gonna need a total of 48 cubic feet and even my most conservative estimate was nearly $400. Not gonna do that. Thank you for sharing this alternative!

You only need 6" of Mels Mix. I feel your pain. Going through it a year later than this video. Trying to find different types of compost is hard. I have 9 raised beds. 7 are 17" high 4x6 and 2 are 15" high 4x3. I only had enough scraps of branches and leaves for 2 of them. Enough cardboard for all. Gonna go with bottom half with a mushroom compost mix of mushroom compost/woodchips/sand since its the cheapest amd easiest way for me without help from others. I can fill 5 of my beds with Mels Mix and just gonna have to figure out the others. Its just costing so much!

I've been collecting soil from the woods around the land, hopefully I can jusg use that. However I do want to try mel's mix, square foot is my favorite gardening book

You're fortunate to have woods near you! I'm sure that soil is so full of nutrients. Mel's mix has worked well for me, and I refer to his book often for the planting calendar as well as other tips. Thanks for commenting!

@@HomeCentsWithNell Everyone on reddit and youtube seems to be divided and I'm wondering your opinion to a first time gardener. The dirt in these woods is probably mostly wood and leaves that have been composting for many years. Can't I just fill my grow bags with that? It looks like potting mix you would buy in stores, nice blackish-dark color, although I do try to sift out the rocks and big clay chunks.

Have a question. Can metal watering trofs be used as a raised bed.i had raised beds in Illinos that were made of wood ,4×8 beds I used mels mix. I'm now living in Texas and notice people are using these medal tanks for their gardens. Any advise. Thanks, Charlotte

Hello and yes, I've seen quite a few people use metal beds successfully, and I think they're the same ones that you're wondering about. I have a video about different garden beds available at Home Depot that showcases the metal beds as well as some other pre-made beds if you want to take a look at the options. Because peat moss expands do you measure it as a 1/3 before or after you expand it in water?

That's an excellent question. I follow the directions in my Square Foot Gardening book which says to measure everything out and then moisten it. Thanks for watching.
