Why? We eat everything in an oyster or mussel or clam. What makes a scallop so good it's bad? I'm 54 years old and have had whole scallops once in my life and the were AWESOME so what's the big deal? It's a freakin' shellfish just like the rest. All shellfish have sex organs, poop and everything else.
@@darthfushang1 i think everything is edible but based on experience the black gut may contain undigested small crabs or even sand.. if it were me, i'd eat all except for the black gut part.. so yes, even the frill.. and another thing is that the black gut will sometimes discolor your butter so that instead of a yellow baked scallop, youll get a weird black scallop
The easiest explanation is, Japan's built different. (Specific) Fish, beef, chicken, eggs etc. from Japan can be consumed raw because they are meticulous, not only from the prepping, but down to the raising and environment of the food. If the scallops are harvested from dirty waters, then of course you want to get rid of the gut. Much like any other sea food, if it's harvested from clean water, then generally, it's safe to eat raw.
@@darthfushang1 is absolutely right. Come on! It’s a freaking shellfish. What wrong with these Japaneses? All Americans get rid of some gut out, and clean properly, because it is supposed to be safe to eat. *If not, the parasites would kill your body.* You never know!
Usual thing is in NZ to keep orange part on and not to wash them,as water makes them watery, and to eat them a little bit under, longer they are cooked the less flavour
His shucking skills are awful and slow lol and yeah the longer they're cooked for it goes tough. I cook mine for about 20 to 30 seconds on each side so it remains tender, and yeah I never wash mine under freshwater hence why I always take seawater home with me in a 10 litre bucket (with a lid) when i dive for my own and wash them clean that way if they've got sand in them, otherwise I leave as is if they don't. The downside is waiting for them to spit the water out before cooking or they splatter when frying them off. Gotta love our oceans down here in Godzone. I'm up in Whangarei.
I never see scallups with the orange parts when they are sold at the grocery store. I wonder if companies cut that part off and add it to an imitation crab meat mixture.
YES, shellfish are alive when you catch them yourself. The box or the bags will have some that are dead but as long as that shell is clamped tight they are alive.
Same here. I was laughing at how he spoke of it like it was going to poison you. I honestly just ate like 20 if them completely whole (except for the Shell of course)
The orange part is the female part of the gonads (i.e. the eggs), while the white part is the male part (i.e. sperm). Scallops are hermaphrodites , i.e. male and female at the same time.
We ate, I think, the entire scallop, including the frill, cooked on the half shell at an asian "food truck" event today at midday. Should we be concerned about long-term health effects? None of us feel ill 9 hours later?
Never wash in freshwater, get sea ice out some in a bowl and when you finish shucking into the bowl, the ice would have melted, wash the scallops in it and then done. I eat them straight away and so don't wash goodness off them but do give them a good clean in the sea before coming home.
Yes you can just separate the shell and eat it on the half shell or clean off the frill and gut and eat it like that. Or slice it up raw and eat it your choice.
Good video but for me what I do is just insert a butter knife into either side of the shell curved or flat side makes no difference run them under cold water add soy sauce and down them whole gut frill and all. Tastes great and you are wasting nothing. Hell I even use the shells for projects.
The scallop should be best eaten raw but I've had the dried fringes. They are delicious. Tantamount to fish jerky they are great and a waste to discard. Asians actually process cleaned fringes and sell them for quite a hefty price.
Not not really at all. It may smell like it when cooking but once cooked it's has a texture of a cooked mushroom and taste like kind of like a sort of firm lobster. If you like seafood, like crab or lobster you'll love it. Normally I'm not much into oyster or fish in general but adore scallops. Very easy to cook and make also, although can be a bit pricey like $12 a pound from a fish market, which gives you like 18 scallops. Restaurants though easily charge like $30 for like 2
Shame On You Evil People 😤. Scallops are living beings too which are also very weak and vulnerable, . Such is mankind that it has to kill and exploit every little inch of this planet 😠
You should Also remove the orange Beak.. It taste of nothing and becomes chewy fast. Remove it and only keep the PERAL!!! Advice. From chef Gordon Ramsay.
Some people do eat the whole thing especially in countries outside of the US. But unlike oysters and muscles, aside from the shells being ridiculously large, the additional innards are gross
@@imdavidlamar they aren't gross at all. I eat every single bit of it all the time. Excluding the Shell and they taste absolutely delicious. I just had about 20 of them right before I watch this video.
