I've converted a lot of individual softcovers or stacks of tpbs to hardcover myself. The first ten or so i separated the pages one by one and did a double fan method to make the book block but it took a long time and messes the lining up of the pages, and I didn't want to trim them if possible. After that, with the thinking that the original adhesive is strong enough to keep the pages bound together, I just started removing the cover only (and clean up the paper left) and strengthen the spine by sawing cuts or nicks across the spine all along it's length. If the book is thick I even put several lengths of thread inside the cuts/nicks. I then spread PVA glue on the spine and slap a mull cloth on it, put head and tail bands, then cover it with paper. At the front and back of the book block, I paste endpapers and is now ready for casing.

Oh wow u actually go to the trouble of removing page by page!!! I've only done that for when I was moving stuff around or switching /splicing issues around like for my dark nights metal custom bind! 🤘🏻

I am planning to get the three Invincible Compendiums and I eventually want to split each compendium into two hardcovers. Will I be able to do that with a company that custom binds books?

Would you recommend binding a Marvel’s Essential or a DC Showcase tpb? Pages are VERY cheap, in black/white? Usually these books are phone book sized but the paper is very light? In your opinion, is it worth it?

If you would like to have it in a hardcover, I’d suggest it! The Batman Knightfall TPBs didn’t have the thickest paper but I was able to carefully prep it and get it bound. No regrets!

How would you sew these into a binding after they are separated like this? I don't see much point going to the trouble separating everything if your not going to mix other issue in and if your just going to glue it all back in...
@jawnsushi

Have you found an answer to this? I've been curious myself about books that were originally bound like this, such as trades like these and manga. I've also wondered how the gutters look once they're done.
@jawnsushi
@jawnsushi 3 года назад
I guess one reason to do this would be if the current binding is falling apart and another reason would be if you want to combine multiples of these books into one custom bind.
@benhopkins4587
@benhopkins4587 3 года назад
@@jawnsushi no I haven’t yet. I can’t imagine the gutter being much better than when you bought them. They’re likely to be worse because of melting glue and the possibility of it shifting closer the the comic/mangas panels. Will update this if I do find something. 😊

he let's a bookbinding company do the binding for him.
@benhopkins4587
@benhopkins4587 3 года назад
@@rap3208 that’s not what I asked. I know he got a company to do it. I was asking how one would do it on their own and if it was possible to sew the pages in instead of glueing.

When choosing Lehman, what option is for comics? I guess I'm asking what the process is. DO I email them or is there a certain order form I use?
@TheHardcoverComic
@TheHardcoverComic 4 года назад
There is only one form you need to fill out (Monograph Order Form) - www.lehmannbookbinding.com/advertech/Monograph.pdf this link should take you to it, do one for each bind. Select your color using their "Stock Material Colour Chart", spine lettering and whatever else you want. You then attach that form to each set of loose comics so they know what you want for each bind. Hopefully that makes sense!

When I got binds done at Lehmann, I also designed my own wraparound covers, instead of standard buckram. Unfortunately, the lamination quickly began to bubble along the edges of the spine (because my books are big). If I did it again, I'd get the standard book covering and print out a dust jacket instead.

Depends what you want for binds design wise. But either Houchen Bindery or Herring and Robinson.

Glued binding. They glue the pages to the spine block.

Will they refuse to bind if you send in whole tpbs? For comic books, is it necessary to remove the staples?
@TheHardcoverComic
@TheHardcoverComic 4 года назад
I don’t think they will refuse to bind it, but they may charge more. I do enjoy the process so I don’t mind taking the TPB apart. For staples, it depends on the bindery. Lehmann doesn’t ask me to remove staples but other binderies do.

I'd assume so as long as you can get it hot enough. Might require something warmer than a hair dryer though. Heat gun maybe? You'd just have to very, very careful. :) If you find out differently and/or try it yourself, please post back!

the binderies don't separate the pages by hand. they just trim a smidgen from the spine and all the pages and covers will be separated.
