How to Preserve Silverbeet/Swiss Chard and Other Leafy Greens 🥬💚

The silverbeet was coming to an end with these hot days that we've been having in south east Queensland. While this crop can be grown over summer, it does prefer a shaded area... something that my garden doesn't have right now!
In today's video I show you how to preserve silverbeet also known as Swiss chard. I show you my method for freezing silverbeet which is also the method that I use to freeze all of my leafy greens in the garden. The greens store really well in the freeze in our climate as it can be difficult to can and preserve food in the subtropics (as our temperature and humidity is so high in Summer).
Hope you enjoy!

Hiya! Thanks so much for watching! Just a quick note... I refer to the silverbeet quite a lot as 'spinach' in this video... just what we always called it growing up so it's stuck! Whilst it isn't quite spinach they're all super similar and this method works well for them both ☺️

I'm just glad you didn't refer to it as swiss chard! 😂

Very useful video thank you. I harvested a large pile of silverbeet today and had no idea how to freeze it. This method was reasonably quick and easy and now I too have it freezing in silicone moulds. A new follower now!

Hi Robyn! Thanks for all those preserving tips, I loved those moulds! They’re bigger than normal IceCube trays which are so small, so clever! I’ve never thought about preserving or canning in the heat, it definitely makes more sense to freeze! Thanks for sharing lovely 😊 have a wonderful week, Anita 🌻🐝💝

Hi Robyn I use a lot of spinach haven’t grown any yet but will try Silverbeet as a substitute. I planted a lot of onion seed a month ago in my Vegepod going well until this morning, just checked them all gone looks like they have been eaten down to ground level, by what no idea 🤷‍♂️, everything else untouched ah well. Take care.

I recently did the same thing with my silverbeet. I am in Victoria, and we had a couple of hot days and my silverbeet started going to seed. I wilted it first, but will blanch next time as wilting it on medium low took forever. Not all have gone to seed, so I still have some for picking fresh.

Good work Robin. I will be trying to grow some more leafy greens in tne shade this spring but I'm not expecting much with the heat we're getting. Good thinking with the trays

Great tips. So if I understand correctly you freeze it first in the moulds and after that in a small container (still in the freezer)?

I thought this was on long term preserving like fermenting pickling and dehydrating .
