For that matter, it's cruel to ask a man WITH boots to lift himself up by his bootstraps. That metaphor was specifically intended as a sarcastic observation about being asked to do the impossible, and now you got conservatives insisting people do that unironically.
@themudpit621
@themudpit621 Год назад
@@CrowTR0bot Many of the people who give this instruction have never had to actually do it. However, plenty of poor people know that it's essentially true. There is no other way up than to lift yourself up without any help. You either get up, or you die. You do the impossible. That's why I like the expression. It contains within it the cruelty of life, and a very hard truth: nobody cares about you when you're down, and they don't really care when you're up either.
@CrowTR0bot
@CrowTR0bot Год назад
@@themudpit621 All you're doing by treating that idiom as a positive is perpetuating cruelty for the sake of it. We SHOULD be uplifting people who can't uplift themselves. They're mainly stuck that way because the rich parasites who arranged society pulled up every ladder behind them. I bet you're the kind of person who admires a person who said he lived on food stamps and that "no one helped me" in the same breath.

White middle aged "upper crust" lady quoted almost exactly that to me about Aboriginal Australians recently! "There is MUCH MORE black on black violence than there ever will be white on black" I saw red but still managed to continue to have the "friendly" debate. But she let her true colours shine bright. Racists sometimes dont even realise they are racist and thats why there are so.many issues. If you are self aware enough you can change and grow. But if you can't see the way that you think is flawed then you will never be better.

If they actually cared and weren't intellectually dishonest, and TALKED to black people, we talk about violence in our neighborhoods all the time. In our "not real music" rap music, art, TV shows, poetry, communities-Kanye addressed it back when he wasn't far right, multiple times, "350 soldiers died in Iraq-509 died in Chicago" -Murder to Excellence, Watch the Throne, 2011. Like, seriously, way to show that you've never had a discussion with someone from the hood that wasn't surface-level.

Humans need to stop infighting long enough to topple our oppressors Mitch McConnell is Emperor Palpatine Some of you will die, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make! - Lord Trump @Justin Y. Calling me stupid really helps your case...Trump has very limited brain power, as evidenced by his rambling, generally repetitive, toddler talks...although most of us are sorely undereducated, Trump really amazes me every time i listen to his banter. Trump did not close the borders in time, many flights to the USA brought sick folk here. When there are only voluntary homeless, when the janitor is paid living wage, when a high school graduate can earn enough in food service, or retail, to support a modest home and essentials, while creating a nest egg...when veterans are given the same care as Congress, Senate and other positions of highest power, rather than left to suffer and die, when the lowest paying jobs are enough to survive on, then and only then, can America boast of being great... As it stands...I feel most of us are born into lies we have no control over...It's well orchestrated, as my points are made clear in every satirical broadcast about the plight of the expendable masses, world wide... Do I want peace, equity and kumbaya? Yeah...I do...are there sociopaths in power oppressing the common folk...yeah...there are...have good Democrats and Republicans existed? That's my 2 cents...some of it...take it or leave it. Most of us just exist and watch, lazily, rather than get directly involved in change. @soaringvulture We don't seem to take note...we, the expendable masses, are being told to push through life ignoring this virus...it took ONE infection to start a Planet Wide Pandemic...and because we didn't quarantine from January 1st to February, we get to watch innocent and otherwise lives lost, daily...who are "we", in "we're in it together"? Certainly not the elite...they step on us to avoid harm...I'm furious with humanity as a whole...I'm furious we accept all this death and Trump's toddler talks...like a Ted talk without useful insight... Those of us suffering are many...while the privileged watch the show They created...when...when will the common folk unite against tyranny, through the only peaceful means we have...vote out career politicians and dynasty families in favor of fellow human beings, with consciousness and compassion for the lowest among us. We won't stop the cycle of abuse by trading Democrats and Republicans, two sides of the same evil, corrupt coin. Vote 3rd party...vote for real people, with flaws, that understand what struggle is...that have put time behind any of these so called essential, yet minimum wage jobs... Benjamin (sorry, his birth certificate literally say Benjamin and I just can't accept that he wants to be called, "Ben" because that's easier; it's just not legally true) has a similar opinion when it comes to people identifying with they/them pronouns because we can't just, "make up stuff in the English language when we want to," (which we literally can-- language is constantly being expanded on), but specific examples of such use of they/them in language exist in Shakespeare's writing. You know... the guy that is taught in every English class in America for at least a semester? (Also, a man whom, alone, added something like hundreds of new words to the English language.)

I used to think systemic sexism/racism didn't exist because laws said we were to be treated equally. Why did I think that? I was literally a naïve *child.* The word of the law does not correlate 1:1 with the action of the law/law enforcers/lawyers etc. And it absolutely does not correlate 1:1 with the actions and conditions of society as a whole. Law-making literally can't control society that precisely, nor should it be allowed to. The idea that anti-racist laws somehow make systemic racism impossible implies either an intentional redefining of what the word systemic means, or some bizarre belief that American law is somehow woven into the fabric of reality around the USA, making it impossible for inequality to exist "because the law says we should be treated equally so we are!"

Indeed. As someone who actually does have a high pain tolerance and is hypersensitive to some painkillers (opioids), it's really annoying to be white when interacting with the medical field. They really coddle you, and it's so f*cking stupid. I hate having to tell doctors and dentists "no, I'm fine, just do it." And half the time they don't listen (cause why would a doctor listen to a woman). I usually end up having to tell the pharmacist not to put in the codeine or whatever "-ine" they've included (fortunately, *they* usually believe me. Though I've occasionally had to throw out pills that contained opioids). Then I read that black women *don't* get pain meds when they need them, while pain meds I shouldn't have (and don't need) are being foisted on me and I'm just like "who thinks any part of this is okay?"

If you dig a hole and dump, say, the entire American minority population inside of it, would it not be difficult for them to climb out? And if their kids had to grow up in that hole, would they not also struggle to climb out? But then you have people above the hole proclaiming, "Oh they just have to pull themselves up by the bootstraps and they'll simply magically float their way out!" And some will climb out, having spent their entire childhood doing so, and they'll be applauded as an example of the system working as intended. And sometimes they'll just dump cocaine in the hole for extra flavor.

Yet the law makers can turn a blind eye to this targeted struggle by claiming that the law is equal and prohibits the rich from such activities too, but they are activities the rich would not engage in because they are rich -- they don't need to. So this invidious "equality" is just phony morality that benefits the rich. Equality before the law is a scam if being poor is a crime.

I have to admire just how clever Ben Shapiro's attempts at arguments are. By attacking the term "social justice" as a perversion, he dismissed himself from any need to actually understand the concept captured by social justice. He no longer needs to present a nuanced and specific argument against social justice ideas because he has supposedly discredited it right at the very source. This is effective because Ben also uses a tactic of speaking very quickly where he doesn't actually give you time to digest his thoughts. When you stop to consider them, like Cody has done, they are truly absurdist, but in the moment you're forced to rapidly accept his ideas to keep up with his argument. In this criticism Ben is really trying to have his cake and eat it too. He knows what Social Justice means, that's why he said it. Social Justice is a summary term: we use it to reference an idea or a concept, as opposed to just saying "Justice" which would be vague and confusing. That's the entire intent of language. By saying "Social Justice" is a perversion, his audience knows what idea he is trying to discredit because the term does its job as being an accessible reference to a subject. The audience isn't confusing it with "Legal Justice" because we've all agreed on what "Social Justice" means. That's literally the cornerstone of language. But he wants to leverage the power of summarily referencing "Social Justice" while discrediting it for being a summary reference...

Those who enslaved men turned those men into animals but also became animals themselves. The problem is hundreds of years old and now people have been convinced to use derisive ways to argue against it. All in the name of capitalism. There aren't even accurate words to describe what is going on. Racism is not inherent, xenophobia and prejudice are but American Racism is a capitalist system born out those things resulting in the enslavement and continued mass incarceration of "others". Most people know very little about racism by design, I'm black and my dad is a scholar and I've been learning things HE does not quite understand and has a hard time hearing because of how hard he was conditioned in the 70s. This is not just one groups problem, it is a world-wide phenomenon now, and by being slowly conditioned to allow one group to be outcast, other groups will be too until... They are coming for you. The solution is for people to realize that average citizens can become city council members and mayors. People don't pay attention to elections that happen for their state/city and just look at the presidential election. Alt-right people have been able to gain power because no one runs and no one votes for those elections. What needs to happen is that normal people need to develop a culture of voting and running for ALL elections in order to create change. And people need to know that this is the solution in order for it to happen.

But state legislation has the ability to redraw congressional lines. And anyone who knows about gerrymandering will know how devastating that can be. We absolutely need to pay attention to local politics. Also, putting aside the Ben for a moment, the only one who even is a racial minority and who we should not exempt but will for the sake of efficiency here, no part of being gay would make you not a racist, that'd be weirdly homophobic to assume it always extends to them, and assuming all Canadians aren't racist, ya know, ignores the whole history of oppressing indigenous populations, stealing their children and destroying their cultures that was very very much a thing until very recently... So no, we shouldn't embrace Peterson or Ruben just because, that'd be kinda ridiculous at best and actively stupid at worst... On top of that, the fact that "actual racists" don't like them doesn't mean anything. Knowing is only _half_ the battle, remember? The people whose wealth is built on social inequality are going to "defend" that wealth even if they are staunchly anti-racist in their personal views. That means that they are still going to try to preserve or expand inequalities THEY depend on, even as they fight to do away with others. And that's not hypocrisy, either. That's simply self-preservation. Without that income derived from inequality, they wouldn't have the resources to fight for equality in other areas.

Shapiros usual targets for his "debates" are unprepared college kids almost half his age. While his usual tactic is to talk fast at them while massively misusing cherry picked real statistics and real studies because he knows that no one in the audience will have the available knowledge or resources to counter whatever he says. The best video of him is when he appeared on the BBC in Britain for an interview about his new book and had a massive melt down live on air - before storming out of the interview - because the interviewer asked him a few questions about things in the book he was there to promote.

They aren't mutually exclusive ideas. Yes, it is true that there are many circumstances that have led to diminished opportunity within marginalized communities but it is also true that perpetual victimization isn't a strategy for academic or career success. I wanted to learn about evidence of modern day systematic racism but I'm not about to watch a one hour video, do you have any links? I know there was that resume study, although that could be explained by socioeconomic prejudice as well, but whenever I ask the question I'm confronted with evidence of inequality. That's not the same thing. I genuinely want to see studies showing, that after controlling for external factors, there remains variance that can only be explained by systematic racism. That probably sounds too rigid but the social sciences certainly aren't 'science' at this point and anecdotes can only affect public opinion by so much, as is clearly evident in this video.

@@ericmanget4280 if you're trying to engage with the topic in good faith, I think you could make the effort to watch the video. Honestly, critically reviewing an academic study would probably take more time anyways, and certainly much more effort. And if you're trying to actually critique the concept of systemic racism, it's kind of on you to put in the work. I do agree that having cited sources in this video description would be nice, but we are given names and book/video titles throughout the video so you can certainly follow up on this with your own research. But I do have to ask, if it's not systemic racism it's inequality, where does that inequality come from? Surely a system that is biased against people of that grouping, in this case race. Which some might call systemic racism. In terms of socioeconomic inequality, this video presents a strong point regarding wealth accumulation and property ownership stemming from old racist housing policies. Which is another reason why watching the video is important, especially if you're commenting on the video. Also, yes calling for a study that controls for ALL SOCIETAL VARIABLES to prove the existence of systemic racism might be a liiiiiiittle much to ask. You're probably better off looking for trends, which may possibly be collated into a single meta-analysis. I don't know, I haven't checked for that myself to be honest.

Fun fact: Bootstraps are the small loops found on some boots that assist with pulling those boots onto your feet. Some older introductory physics textbooks would pose the question, "Why can't you pull yourself up by your own bootstraps?" as an introduction to teaching the idea of opposing forces. Specifically, no matter how hard you pull on your bootstraps, your feet are pushing down on the soles of your boots with an equal amount of force in the opposite direction, so you will never actually rise above the ground. So "lifting yourself up by your own bootstraps" came to mean a task that was literally physically impossible. Ironically, many people misunderstand the actual meaning of the phrase, and use it to mean being self-sufficient.
