Best substrate video EVER!!! natural convection is a big key to avoiding problems. Adding tiny holes below the substrate level will also help the deep parts of the sub to breathe

I don't think a substrate with just coco fiber is the worst you can have (for example, the spiderworld shop only use cocofiber substrate). For me it got 2 problems....first it dry to fast, so it don't hold moisture to well.....and second, you can put like 8 cm of substrate, after a few months you end with 4 cm (or something like that).

So I started out with some isopods in my enclosure with my tarantula and now Im waiting on the springtails to put in my enclosure.Do I have to get live plants in my enclosure to keep the springtails alive and healthy or can they just live in the Sphagnum moss,cocofiber,zoo med reptisoil,and vermiculite mixture soil I have in enclosure and if so, do I keep it moist all the time, or moist and then let dry out?Any feedback will be greatly appreciated says my C.Versicolor!

I've made a substrate mix off organic top soil vermiculite and exo terra forest moss all mixed together and added springtails too my enclosures is that a good substrate mix? Cause I've got a lot off moisture dependent species such as pamphobeteus phormictopus even though they aren't as moisture dependent as the pamphobeteus species I've also got a juvenile T stirmi is that a good substrate mix for these species?? Thanks.

I’ve been keeping a ladybug in a jar for over a week (because it’s disabled and can’t fly) and today I noticed mould in the bottom of his terrarium. Its a tall jar but it has vents at the top. What should I do? I worked hard on the bottom part, I glued dried moss and bark and now that it’s mouldy I’m worried I’ll have to throw this part out. Someone please help!!

@birdspiders
@birdspiders 5 лет назад
it's maybe a bit too much ventilation. You have to test it out, if it dries out too quick, just put something on the ventilation to block half of it. A lot of success and let us know how it goes 💪

You did a review about TSS cylindrical enclosure, i think that only has top ventilation.? I tried to copy that by using a tall glass jar with only top ventilation for one of my arboreal T but i put a gravel at the bottom and screen mesh so the soil won’t mix with the gravel, i was trying to attain a circulation at the bottom. I’m not an expert on this, what do u think?
@birdspiders
@birdspiders 5 лет назад
never tested the cylindrical TSS enclosures. Ideally you would have wholes near the substrate layer so that the air can circulate throughout the enclosure. Maybe make some new air holes?

Epipremnum sp. will make a great plant in almost any enclosure, since you basically just need to keep their roots a little moist, so you can also use this plant in very dry enclosures like the ones you mentioned

How important is a drainage layer in a live enclosure?
@birdspiders
@birdspiders 5 лет назад
it really depends on the moisture level. For tarantulas I would say it is not necessary, as there is no species you should completely wet. But for dart frogs for example, they really need a very high humidity and moist/wet soil.. so a drainage layer is essential

Amazing ! I am waiting for my G. Pulchripes to arrive (will be shipped on monday) I already set up the enclosure and Im about to buy springtails mini mealworms and red runners. My question is I only know 3 places online I can buy those : reptile-food.ch, lemanreptiles.ch and reptiles-farm.ch. Are there any others ? (I will have a self sustaining colony of springtails just in case they run out in my tank also a small colony of red runners) basically I wanted to know where I could get those other than these (sometimes they run out of insects etc etc) just to be on the safe side. Also I have a Nano exo terra tank and I was wondering how much isopods would be enough to colonise the place rather quickly ? (I have aaaaaa lot of substrate in, sphagnum moos, cork bark, leaves and rocks) Last question how deep in the substrate isopods go? Do they "burrow" ? You can get a glimpse of my terre there : www.reddit.com/r/tarantulas/comments/dgddqk/g_pulchripes_baby_exo_terra_nano_tank_setup_just/?

It's all about those micro organisims. A sterile enclosure has no bacteria and other organisms to break down organic matter so it slowly decays and attracts mites and gnats etc. I've never understood the only Coco fibre or vermiculite thing. I'm not quite daring enough to use earth from outside but you can buy top soil, peat moss, sand etc cheaply from a garden centre or something like that.
